No idea, I don't follow any other sports. But the owners are making lots of money and there are plenty of fans out there and it makes no sense whatsoever to say that the league will contract by 50% and the commenter gave no reason why that should be the case. They keep building new stadiums even when TV money keeps growing. There are cities that should have a major league team, like Portland, Oregon, where I am, that have more population and are growing much faster than a number of the cities that have existing major league teams. Portland even has made a success of a soccer team playing in a converted former Triple A baseball stadium that has no parking. The basketball team has been pretty successful as well. Oregon produces a lot of major league players and baseball still is played by young folks everywhere. I thinkk a major league team here would be very successful so long as they have a domed stadium.

For the guys wanting to do the Wil Myers trade, it should be noted that with Hosmer out of the Padres lineup, they have turned to Cronenworth at 1B, not Myers.
I also saw Cronenworth in the Premier-12 games and he was also impressive but more for the way he played rather than the tools. He just looked more professional than everyone else.

The economics of Baseball are broken. Small market teams trying to fix them has created a massive mess that likely results in the worst labor fight in decades. It's the only sport where all teams can't spend to the luxury tax line and make money. So you have teams like Tampa and Oakland spending a hundred million less per year so they can make a little money. It's not about market size, people just don't care even if they win or lose. It's about markets where baseball can create this culture where it's in people's DNA. Baseball isn't great at that and the fact big market teams have such an advantage is a huge reason why. Even when the Marlins and Ray's are good the fans don't come. Marlins win Championship's and have to gut the team because they lost tons of money.
The gap isn't closing, heck I think it's getting bigger now than ever with teams now owning the Networks that show the games.
It's going to take a mini miracle to turn around small market teams. The big money is still made selling the teams. Yet I can see that potentially running into issues down the road because Baseball isn't fair. There is zero parity in the sport mainly because 1/3 of the teams make 75% of the revenue or something in that area. Something you don't see in the NBA, NFL or NHL because they evenly split TV money. There aren't teams owning Yes network and NESN, along with all teams having there own TV deals.
Every area in this Country has young kids playing Baseball. That isn't it, tons of Kids play baseball in Florida.
I certainly don't see contractions as likely, yet it's not crazy either. The economics of Baseball are broken and it likely just keeps getting worse. The way to fix it won't happen, they won't do a national TV deal for all teams.

Serious question, and I don’t know the answer: how many cities/markets have a baseball team and another major sports franchise and the baseball team is the favorite? I ask cause I live in WA, and I’d say the Mariners fall behind the Seahawks, the Sounders, and, depending on what side of the state, UW or Wazzu. And sure the Mariners blow, but still... So why does this matter? Isn't the question whether the teams are profitable? Is Burger King going to contract if it's not the preferred burger chain to McDonald's anywhere, or is the point whether or not enough people come to Burger King in a vacuum? I forget where I saw this, and I'm sure this is a paraphrase at best, but professional sports leagues aren't competing with each other. They're competing with Fortnite and Netflix. Johnny Sportsfan's favorite team might be the Patriots, but that doesn't mean his fandom doesn't help make the Red Sox profitable. (And for what it's worth, at the risk of a tangent, I think the Patriots are ahead of the Red Sox right now... that said, we'll see if that holds in the post-Brady era, as I think a big part of the reason is they're reliably very good every single season, which was true of the Red Sox during their peak in the aughts but wasn't true over the last decade despite the two 'ships.)

I did not say anything about contracting. It doesn’t matter. I was curious. I think it is simply interesting that baseball, which is still trademarked as “America’s pastime,” seems to have slipped into a second tier in terms of the broader national consciousness. The NBA and NFL have done a much better job of branding players not just on the field but as cultural figures. Hell, I would say MMA has done better: the average sports fan knows who Rhonda Rousey or Conor McGregor are, but the fights themselves draw a fraction of the audience of other sports. It is true, the profit is still there. But a) it won’t be if baseball becomes even less relevant; and b) it bums me out that a nation doesn’t turn its lonely eyes to today’s Joe DiMaggio, but to a basketball or football player.

Don’t look now, but the Marlins are on their way to a .750 winning percentage.

For someone who has supposedly had the passion sucked out of them you sure do spend a lot of time complaining about a game on a random internet board. It sure beats being John Henry's sockpuppet.

TJ for Osuna. It makes you sad when it's the good guys in the game.

Does it? I'm sure being Henry's sock puppet at least pays pretty well. Sadly it won't pay well for a generational talent. No amount of astroturfing can change that.

Bad news for America's favorite team.
Bob Nightengale @bnightengale · 1h Houston #Astros LHP Kent Emanuel will miss rest of season after receiving 80-game suspension after testing positive for Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (DHCMT), a performance-enhancing substance.

It's kind of funny how everyone was like "once Dylan Bundy gets out of Baltimore he's going to turn into a monster" and then he got out of Baltimore and immediately turned into a monster. Turned in a 10 K, 1 run complete game last night that including 30 looking strikes AND 16 whiffs.
