Some takeaways from Houck/Tapia game yesterday.
Casas physically looks good. He no longer looks soft. He made one nice play on a hard hit grounder by Duran. At bat, he has yet to get his first hit but doesn't look overmatched, best illustrated by his AB against Tapia who was throwing upper 90's and finished him off with a 100 MPH swinging strike. That's likely the fastest pitcher he's ever faced.
Houck started off shakey but settled down nicely.
Downs with a very nice play at second.
Simpson's slider is impressive.
Ockimey played outfield for the second consecutive game. No chances today.
Wong is very athletic but nowhere near ready. AA level play right now. Same same with Downs but a little more advanced.
Arroyo looks more impressive than Peraza.
Duran is easily the most impressive player in camp. A distant second is Marco.
Seth Blair needs a lot of work. He's not repeating anything. Big guy with an unusual delivery.

Mechanics looked solid, only one inning but located well. He also threw a change up that moved like a cutter but that was 91 MPH. I didn't see a third pitch, looked like a late game reliever candidate to me but this was my first look and only on TV and I didn't see him in 2019. The brass here would be a better source than me.

I know you can't judge a guy's defense on two plays, but if Downs can pull this off at SS I think he'll make a pretty good defensive second baseman.

According to the twitter feed, Sox released Marco Hernandez. That surprises me since he was one of the best hitters in Band Camp.

Maybe hoping he'll get by DFA ? In reality, we now have a lot of multi position guys with Arroyo and Potts added to the mix. So maybe it was just time.

Watching the sim game (weird one, no fielder)s. Mata, Groome, Seabold scheduled to pitch.
So far Mata has been faster than Groome. They havent been giving radars but he hit 99 in the first, something I didn't know. He also hit 98 in the 3rd. Looks like his command is decent today. Groome's curve is clearly better than Mata slider. Through 3,this is the best I've seen Groome, he's been much more efficient and dominating than Mata. Both look good though.

OK, going to say something stupid. There's a chance Groome could be in Boston mid season next year. He was that solid today with his entire repertoire. He dominated the five innings.
Mata with a scare, went down after a pitch in the fifth. He walked off the field so I'm under the opinion that it was a hammy cramp. He also looked good, lost it a bit in the 4th when he seemed to be overthrowing. He recovered nicely and finished strong.
Seabold in now

Seabold looked good too. Funny that people comped his profile to Bronson Arroyo because his mechanics are also similar (and hair length). Makes me wonder if he plays a guitar.
So far, the reputation sticks, he's pretty much hitting the catchers mitt every time.
Casas with his first hit, a two strike (crouched, chocked up) ball onto the roof. He crushed it.

They had the Sox game on while Seth Blair was warming so everyone saw the Dalbec homer. It was well received.

After some treatment Mata walked through the dugout in stocking feet, a bit gingerly but did not appear to be limping. It is very dry, very sunny and very windy today and I imagine it would be really easy to get dehydrated and suffer a cramp.

You know everyone there is rooting for Bobby. Seth Blair looked like he did the other day. He's altering his arm angle and the command shows it. Good stuff but I'm not so sure it will work out. Different looks could and he's a great story but I'm not betting my grandma's petunias on it. Except for Casas the first time, Seabold is pretty much striking everyone out very efficiently. He struck out Casas on his second time up.

I expect Groome to be in the middle of the rotation at some point, but I hope they go slow. He’s barely thrown pro innings and seems like he still has potential to grow into. That body, the few innings he’s thrown, renewed health... I bet he can add a bit to his entire repertoire (velocity, improved change etc).

It is very dry, very sunny and very windy today and I imagine it would be really easy to get dehydrated and suffer a cramp. I'm hoping and thinking it was a cramp. They can be very painful. The trainer immediately tried to stretch his leg which I don't think he'd have done with a hamstring. It also looked like things were progressively getting better for Mata. I recall when I was a kid doing work on a farm during the Summer and one of my pals fell over and was in agony from a cramp. Being cruel 13 year old kids we threw watermelons at him while he was rolling around on the ground. I should say near him as you don't want to make a direct hit with a watermelon but they split open and spray nicely. He was fine after a bit and we all ate watermelon.

He's a free agent. manfred, It wouldn't be that he asked for it. They needed to clear a spot in the player pool after the Moreland trade to add both Potts and Rosario. I think he started good but then cooled off, but it's possible you watched more Sim City than me. He's a guy who can't play short and was probably behind Chatham, Downs, Arroyo, and Munoz at this point, and had Potts coming up behind. They needed the spot more than they needed him.

Maybe he'll come back next year maybe not, the field is getting crowded. Good bat though. After all he went through, I hope he gets another shot someplace. I watched the rest of the game Seabold continued to look good in all three innings. I don't know how many batters he struck out but it was a bunch and the strike/ball ratio must have been off the charts. Maybe I saw 3 members of the 2022 rotation tonight.

Jen McCaffrey @jcmccaffrey · 32m Regarding Mata leaving today's alternate site game today, sources say the initial evaluation was just a hamstring cramp, but they'll check in on him again tomorrow

How is that only 380 feet? Has anyone noticed that blast was from his two strike set up where he chokes up four or five inches and is in a deep crouch.
