I am not so sure that is an accurate portrayal of the article. The article was evaluating prospects traded away not evaluating the merits of the trades, therefore they would be comparatively negative relative to the value of the players we traded. For the San Diego two, for the most part he didn't say anything we haven't said. He points out that neither were in the SD pre-season top 20 and said why. He did seem more negative on Potts and said two things, one offense characteristic, one defensive that I hadn't heard. For the Philly two, he started off pointing out that neither Workman nor Hembree are off the charts relievers so the return was so-so. He thinks Pivetta should be turned into a reliever but for me, that might be true but what's the rush ? For Seabold, what he said doesn't square with either what I saw or what other analysts have said so I won't comment there. It seems though that he's giving him a 5th starter/swingman floor and a #4 ceiling. I have zero problem with that. I didn't see where he said the two PTBNL weren't in their team's top 20 and I seriously doubt if he knows who they are. That’s not so bad. I agree with you... I want to see if they can straighten Pivetta out as a starter. If either Pivetta or Seabold ends up at the back end of the rotation, it was a masterstroke. It appears that we will get our wish and Pivetta's as well: “To be with an organization that values me as a starter, I’m just super-grateful for that opportunity,” Pivetta said. “I’m going to make the most of it.” theathletic.com/2038039/2020/09/01/nick-pivetta-starter-red-sox-phillies/?source=dailyemailAs an added bonus, we are likely going to get an additional year of control per designated's calculations. Sox coaching is talking weeks not days.

I quickly looked at the 40 man roster and saw we have 39 spots filled. Sale is on it. I believe because he will be on the 60 day dl that that spot is open until he is ready to start again, sometime in july? Pedy and Mchugh are both on. I think they are a long shot to make the roster. Pedy probably back on the 60 day at best and maybe he retires. Mc hugh is probably not going take a spot ahead of any of the pitchers listed above. Lin I don't think stays. I quickly identified 8 other pitchers listed that I do not think stays ahead of the guys listed above. So I think there is a lot of room to bring these guys on. Duran could be a very interesting situation. Does JBJ stay next year? If so, Duran could stay down another year. If they plan on letting him go this winter it would seem to make sense that Duran is probably the heir apparent, so I would think they should bring him up this year and see if they think he can handle the job next season. If not then this winter they need to make a decision on what they are going to do with the outfield. 40-man is currently at 39. + Pedroia, ERod, Sale (they all have to go back on the 40 over the offseason. There's no offseason injured list.) - JBJ, McHugh I do not project that JDM will opt out. So here's what you're working with, plus the 7 they need to add: C: Vazquez, Plawecki, WongCIF: Devers, Chavis, Dalbec, PottsMIF: Pedroia, Bogaerts, Chatham, Arauz, Peraza OF: Benintendi, Martinez, Wilson, Verdugo, RosarioUT: Lin, Munoz SP: Rodriguez, Sale, Eovaldi, Weber, Hart, Perez, Godley, Pivetta, Groome, Houck, Mata, SeaboldRP: Barnes, Walden, Brasier, Brewer, Taylor, Hernandez, Aybar, Brice, Springs, Valdez, Stock, Triggs, Leyer Swing: Mazza, Hall, Covey, Kickham So need at least 8 DFA or non-tenders. Seems clear most is coming from that stack o' pitching. So I'll guess cuts from the following list: Peraza (non-tender), Hart, Springs, Hall, Kickham, Mazza, Triggs, Covey, Walden. Could see one of Munoz or Lin gone although Munoz has an option. All that said, my guess is that trades might work some of this out. And they're going to need to add a starting CF whether it's JBJ, Duran, or someone else; potentially a bench OF if they're not comfortable having Lin fill that role; at least one SP and at least one RP. There is going to be a TON of churn this offseason, likely in the hopes that guys clear and stay, like Gonsalves and Shawaryn recently. EDIT: Realized McHugh becomes a free agent, thanks to a representative from Chico's Bail Bonds.

Pronouncenames.comI've never heard the name Rosario pronounced like that with emphasis on the first syllable. I've only ever heard emphasis on the second syllable, like below.

So here's what you're working with: C: Vazquez, Plawecki CIF: Devers, Chavis, Dalbec MIF: Pedroia, Bogaerts, Chatham, Arauz, Peraza OF: Benintendi, Martinez, Wilson, Verdugo UT: Lin, Munoz SP: Rodriguez, Sale, Eovaldi, Weber, Hart, Perez, Godley, Pivetta RP: Barnes, Walden, Brasier, Brewer, Taylor, Hernandez, Aybar, Brice, Springs, Valdez, Stock, Triggs, Leyer Swing: Mazza, Hall, McHugh, Covey, Kickham They need to cut 2 to get down to 40. Need to protect: Groome, Houck, Mata, Potts, Rosario, Seabold, Wong (+7) So need at least 9 DFA or non-tenders. Seems clear most is coming from that stack o' pitching. And they're going to need to clear more room to sign a CF (it seems clear they're not ready to turn CF over to Duran on opening day, at least without beating someone out), potentially a bench OF if they're not comfortable having Lin fill that role, at least one SP and at least one RP. There is going to be a TON of churn this offseason, likely in the hopes that guys clear and stay, like Gonsalves and Shawaryn recently. Is there a reason to keep Wilson? Is it just because it leaves them at 3 outfielders at that point? He does not appear to have a huge future. I’d likely rather just stick Chavis in left, Beni or Verdugo in cf. Then Duran at some point. This chart also makes me wonder if they will, in fact, keep JBJ (at a lower price, if possible).

Bloom seems like a wheeler dealer, I'll bet he finds a 2 or 3 for one swap. There's a lot of upside to the bullpen group, the kind that gets snagged during Rule 5.

There's also the Arauz factor. We are going to be near the top of the Rule 5 draft. I'll bet we leave room for a hidden gem. Since the roster size at 26 is permanent, it's the perfect time to do that.

If they added Wilson last offseason, why wouldn't they keep him now? Nothing has changed with him. In theory you could say there's more of a roster crunch, but I don't see that. He's a top 30 prospect in the system. I think they'd trade him before DFA'ing him.

In light of the season being cancelled and his not being on the 60 man and the highest level attained being A ball, I'd guess that Aybar would clear the draft.

Bradford last night said there will be a market for JBJ. My question is yes but at what cost and term. He isn’t getting 11 million plus per year. At this point he is what he is no mystery to him.

I really believe Bloom thought he could trade Bradley in the off-season. So it crystal clear there isn't a market for him at $11 million in a normal year. Pillar got one year 4.25 million and they are very similar type players. Yet next year won't be a normal year and Bradley is having a better age 30 season currently than Pillar did. Best guess 3-5 million next year, normal year maybe 5-7 million if he keeps up his current level. If we get another long cold streak it could be lower. He shouldn't be hard to resign if you want him.

Bloom couldn't eat half or more of his remaining salary and trade him for equivalent or better value?

For all his streakiness, at the full-season level he's actually been incredibly consistent since 2017: wRC+ of 89, 90, and 90 in '17, '18, and '19. With his defense that's made him about a 2 WAR/year player. This season his average and OBP are right where they always are; just the ISO is down a bit. I'd chalk that up to a small sample size. Seems like a bargain at 5-7 million/year for 2 or 3 years, even factoring in a bit of decline, if that would get it done.

Come opening day those two spots will probably open . Well at least Sale's spot. C's all stay. CIF the only one that is safe is Devers. The MIF's the only one safe is XB. OF Wilson is probably going to be moved. The UT's I can see both gone. Sp's Weber, Hart and Godley all gone. The Rp's if I counted right, I can see 8 gone., maybe more. So, 20 guys could get turned over. I do not think they are all cut, I think that we will see many moved in trades. I think the trade deadline was the start of Bloom' s upgrade of the roster. I think the 40 man roster thread this winter is going to be very busy. In the CIF and MIF section I noted only XB and Devers are safe. I do not think, obviously pedy will be off limits and he will determine his fate, they are going to be gotten rid of. I am just saying that if Bloom finds something better at a decent price they are gone. I can see rule 5 pitchers in play and there are about 25 to 30 possibly available. I think we have a very entertaining off season coming.

FYI There are no more trades allowed during 2020 season. Period. None. No waiver trade for someone like JBJ or Eovaldi. No non-roster players can be traded. Lucroy or Tapia. www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/phillies/mlb-september-roster-rules-2020-mlb-season?amp="The 2020 trade deadline was a hard deadline, meaning no trades can be made in September, even via waivers. The only way for a team to add a player outside the organization in September is to claim him via outright waivers after he is designated for assignment ... To be eligible for the postseason, a player must be on his team's active roster by 11:59 on Sept. 15. (40-man roster, injury substitutes)"

This thread has veered away from being about the trade deadline and more to 2021 roster building. Please use the "Looking Ahead to 2021" thread for that discussion. Thanks.
