2020 Fall Instructional Camps
|
Post by vermontsox1 on Sept 1, 2020 22:32:14 GMT -5
Big news from BA - MLB sent a memo to teams today informing them that minor league instructional camps, including games against other organizations, will be permitted starting on September 18. Teams can use their ATS or their spring training facility (or both). Teams also have to submit health and safety plans to MLB for approval. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/mlb-allows-instructional-camps-to-proceed/

Huge. I know they were really hoping to have SOMETHING this fall.
VERY rough first guess at a roster below. I'm sure I"m missing people. Tell me who.
Pitchers Brock Bell, Brayan Bello, Bradley Blalock, Brendan Cellucci, Felix Cepeda, Nathanael Cruz, Shane Drohan, Durbin Feltman, Wilkelman Gonzalez, Jay Groome, Gabriel Jackson, Chih-Jung Liu, Blake Loubier, Chris Murphy, Yusniel Padron-Artiles, Luis Perales, Aaron Perry, AJ Politi, Aldo Ramirez, Roniel Raudes, Jorge Rodriguez, Zach Schellenger, Alex Scherff, Connor Seabold, Chase Shugart, Thaddeus Ward, Jeremy Wu-Yelland, Ryan Zeferjahn
Catchers Roldani Baldwin, Kole Cottam, Jonathan Diaz, Jaxx Groshans, Naysbel Marcano, Jhonny Pereda, Stephen Scott, Connor Wong
Infield Brainer Bonaci, Cameron Cannon, Triston Casas, Pedro Castellanos, Danny Diaz, Jeter Downs, Ryan Fitzgerald, Antoni Flores, Brandon Howlett, Blaze Jordan, Matthew Lugo, Nick Northcut, Hudson Potts, Ceddanne Rafaela, Nick Yorke
Outfield Darel Belen, Cole Brannen, Juan Chacon, Tyler Dearden, Nick Decker, Tyler Esplin, Albert Feliz, Bryan Gonzalez, Gilberto Jimenez, Eduardo Lopez, Angel Maita, Dean Miller, Jeisson Rosario, Marcus Wilson, Eduardo Vaughan
And the PTBNLs from Colorado and Chicago.

I'd assume they would include the 2020 draftees, plus maybe a few of the priority UDFAs.

Chris, no McGrath or Wade? statistically only Ward was in their league, why would the Sox pay them and not use them?

Huge. I know they were really hoping to have SOMETHING this fall. VERY rough first guess at a roster below. I'm sure I"m missing people. Tell me who..... And the PTBNLs from Colorado and Chicago. would the PTBNL even be eligible/official at that point? I suppose if the reason they can't be named is specific to this season and the 60 man rosters, that limitation could be removed at their discretion. But if not, this camp starts before the end of the season, during September. Chris also assumes this is similar to past instructional league with a limited invite list. Because of the missed minor league season, wouldnt a team want to bring in far more than usual just to check in and see some game action? The "payment" seems to suggest that its a larger contingent.

The option of using the ATS, which only has one field, makes me think this isn't bringing in a huge group. But yeah, it's an assumption.

Do you think there is a chance they use the Spring Training Facility too? Maybe split it into two groups with the more advanced group being in Pawtucket and the younger, more developmental group down in Florida? I would think they’d want to get as many players as much work as possible to try to make up as much as possible for the lost season. You know more about this than I do though.

Am I correct that the pitchers will have minimal conditioning, so would only be available for short stints -- hence the need for lots of pitchers?

I'd assume they're more likely to use Ft. Myers for logistical reasons (more space in the facility, more fields, probably more players currently living closer to FL, etc.). The memo also says that the ATS cannot be used for an instructional camp while it's also being used for the 30 man player pool, so they'd have to wait until after 9/27. Also if you use Ft. Myers, there is obviously a greater chance of getting to play games against other teams (probably just the Twins).

That's one thing I'm confident they won't do. I'm not sure what the point would be. If they want to bring in a whole bunch of guys, they can just do it down in Florida where they have everyone at once for spring training. Like I said above, I'm guessing what a roster would look like if it's close-ish in size to a FIL one. It could be larger, for sure. Probably will be. I'm just spitballing for discussion. They aren't going to bring EVERYONE in though, because they need to develop procedures to deal with COVID. The more players, the harder that gets.

We'll see. The Arizona teams are much more geographically compact - all of the teams are within an hour of each other. Compare that to Florida, where the Red Sox are 1 hour from maybe 4 of the 14 teams.

Unfortunately, it's likely to be a giant black box for the fanbase.

Crockett has media availability tomorrow. Perhaps we'll get some news there.

According to BA, Red Sox have confirmed they will hold a six week camp beginning in early October. Any idea yet if Instructs will be open to the people in some format? If football can have fans in the stand, baseball should be able to allow limited people in right? Masked and socially distant of course.

I can't imagine they would let people in. Virtually no one in South Florida is masking and staying socially distant. Autograph hounds will not stay socially distant--if you let people in, you have to have staff there to manage them (more unnecessary exposure and expense). A player testing positive could wipe out a good chunk of camp.

Potentially will have games against other teams. FWIW, my list above was 66 guys, so it'll look something like that, although in hindsight have more high minors guys probably.

Second cut after realizing I left Duran off (might've been on purpose at the time). One question I have is whether they might have something in the DR Academy for Latin American guys. I have half a mind to take a bunch of those guys off this list and add US guys on that premise.
Pitchers Brock Bell, Brayan Bello, Bradley Blalock, Brendan Cellucci, Felix Cepeda, Nathanael Cruz, Shane Drohan, Durbin Feltman, Jay Groome, Chih-Jung Liu, Blake Loubier, Chris Murphy, Yusniel Padron-Artiles, Luis Perales, Aaron Perry, AJ Politi, Aldo Ramirez, Roniel Raudes, Jorge Rodriguez, Zach Schellenger, Alex Scherff, Connor Seabold, Chase Shugart, Jacob Wallace, Thaddeus Ward, Jeremy Wu-Yelland, Ryan Zeferjahn
Catchers Roldani Baldwin, Kole Cottam, Jonathan Diaz, Jaxx Groshans, Naysbel Marcano, Jhonny Pereda, Stephen Scott, Connor Wong
Infield Brainer Bonaci, Cameron Cannon, Triston Casas, Pedro Castellanos, Danny Diaz, Jeter Downs, Ryan Fitzgerald, Antoni Flores, Brandon Howlett, Blaze Jordan, Matthew Lugo, Nick Northcut, Hudson Potts, Ceddanne Rafaela, Nick Yorke
Outfield Darel Belen, Juan Chacon, Tyler Dearden, Nick Decker, Jarren Duran, Tyler Esplin, Albert Feliz, Bryan Gonzalez, Gilberto Jimenez, Eduardo Lopez, Angel Maita, Dean Miller, Jeisson Rosario, Marcus Wilson, Eduardo Vaughan
+ Cubs PTBNL

Hope they televise/stream these. Honestly they might have a nice window since basketball and hockey will be done by the time this thing gets going.

Hope they televise/stream these. Honestly they might have a nice window since basketball and hockey will be done by the time this thing gets going. Not going to happen. They may or may not even be playing other teams. They let Pawtucket stream so the affiliate can make some money. No incentive to stream this.
