But I stayed up way past my bedtime compiling this list (and probably spent 30 minutes trying to resolve a discrepancy in the roster count -- turned out that Stephen Wright was released from the 60-man IL, so I was counting him as a subtraction incorrectly), so I just put up the raw findings! Eric, bud. web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.soxprospects.com/40man.htmHere's the 40man on October 6, 2019: web.archive.org/web/20190921123354/https://soxprospects.com/40man.htm The changes from this point until he was hired would be the aforementioned release of Wright, the outrights of Gorkys Hernandez and Josh A. Smith, and Chris Owings, along with those two, opting to become free agents, so 37 with 3 guys on the 60-day. 1) I did really enjoy reading all the transactions, though!
2) archive.org is a rabbit hole I'm consciously avoiding. I have so much stuff on message boards that scrolled off (especially at IMDB) that I'm not even looking to see if it exists there. If it does (and I suspect it does), that's untold hours of reading what I wrote. If it doesn't, I'm bummed. So I intentionally have not learned how to use it!

Bingo! They hit on the guy to shuffle. That’s a good break. He'll be back if can find any of what got him his chance in 2019. Have been watching last cpl weeks of 2020 season on mlbtv and Walden did look bad after coming back from think was covid list. Couldn't locate his pitches , combined with hanging others in games vs Miami and a game with the NYY, that wasn't him at all in 2019.

He has a good arm. I’m glad he snuck through. I don’t know if he’ll ever be back, but it’s worth a AAA slot.

Chris posted he was only optioned and not covid issue, so he must have just been messed up somehow parts of last season and admit some games did not watch of theirs last year, mostly late, why was going over end of year to see some of what may have missed and he did look bad, but how he went from one of the key middle relievers to losing it late last year I don't understand, his command was fair enough in 2019 and am very glad he's still a member and fairly confident he'll be back on the mlb roster during the season once works out whatever issue he was having.

He threw his slider 37% of the time in 2019 and I recall reading a story where he said that he had always resisted throwing it that much because of the strain on his arm, but it was time to see how good he could be if he did. Well, in 2020 he lost 0.9" of downward movement, 1.3" of horizontal, and 1.1 mph, and it got hit very hard.
But he didn't pitch much, and Brasier had a similar off year before recovering most of his stuff. The odds of a comeback weren't worth anyone claiming him and having to make room, but they exist and it's good to have that possibility in hand.
Next up, Brewer (?) for Plawecki.

Eric... have you ever seen studies on slider use and pitcher decline? I was always told the same thing... use it sparingly, because it ruins your arm. I don’t actually know if it is true— It *feels* true (the effort of the pitch does feel more violent than any others). But then, I also remember a lot of talk about splitters ruining elbows, which always made less sense. Anyway, I’m curious if you’ve ever done/seen a study that measures primes with slider heavy pitchers. Do they fade faster or is it a myth?

They think Payamps could get claimed, why not waive Schreiber, Wilson, who they now have Santana ahead of regardless. Colten Brewer, who is on last year of waiver options if remember correctly and really don't know how made it this far on the 40 man.
Mata can now go to the 60 day, so 1 spot is safe for awhile, but I worry now with Bloom, who doesn't seem to waive the obvious choice and has claimed some who make one go "huh"? (Schreiber).
Not a huge knock on him, understand he's looking for that magical "spin rate", tho do wish he'd target a cpl more guys who can throw a bit harder with only some mechanical issues instead.

So I take it that Payamps was the waiver to bring Plawecki back on the 40-man... The RS still need a spot for Franchy, I hope the next one waived is Colton Brewer.

The Payamps waiver and Mata going on the 60-day will make room for Plawecki and Franchy. I'm with those who think Brewer has exhausted his upside and would have been a better choice than Payamps, just because the latter was deemed claiming (twice!) ... they apparently see something in him that I don't, which is good. Here's how the 40-man roster has changed since Bloom took over. Pos Left How, When Acquired Promoted How, When C Sandy Leon Tr 12/2/19 Kevin Plawecki FA 1/2/20 C Juan Centeno Outr 11/4/19 Ronal. A research of the rules indicates that the 14 players on Option can't be recalled til the 11th of April. Regardless of when they were optioned down. Thus, shuffling of the roster during the first week is prevented. The usual injury exception applies, which would allow Valdez and Houck Edit: April 8 is earliest players can come off IL. Both pitchers and position players have a 10-day IL in '21. www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/injuries-strike-blue-jays-camp-new-set-questions-emerges/

Given that Brennan got all the way to the Red Sox on waivers, I wonder if they try to pass him through now knowing that he nearly just cleared. In theory, the only teams you don't know about are the one or two that would've had worse priority, although the evolving injury landscape could easily have changed things in a couple days for a team or two.

Santana will be activated tomorrow, per Enrique Rojas (ESPN). I'm assuming Brennan or Brice is the countermove.

Santana will be activated tomorrow, per Enrique Rojas (ESPN). I'm assuming Brennan or Brice is the countermove. Comes down to whether they're sticking with the 3-man bench. If so, DFA Brennan or Brewer and option Chavis or Cordero. If not, DFA Brice. Brennan has been decent in Worcester. Better than Brewer (although his schedule got messed up when he got called up). I wonder at this point if they'd DFA Brewer first. As for who they'd option, it depends on how they want to use Santana. I could see Cordero going down with Chavis the eventual countermove when Arroyo gets healthy, but they're really not limited in what they do. Cordero has just 2 starts over the last week but they've faced a bunch of LHP, so can't read too much into that. Honestly, if Bazardo weren't hurt, I could've seen them doing a kind of double-switch, DFA'ing Brice and optioning one of the hitters to bring up Bazardo and Santana.
