Like many or most other teams, the Rangers are planning to trim their payroll in response to the revenues lost during the shortened 2020 season. In a session with media earlier this week, managing partner Ray Davis told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News and other reporters that “two major factors” will contribute to less spending next year.
“The first is how much baseball is going to lose [financially] in 2020. And also, the life cycle of our club,” Davis said. “We have some high-paid contracts rolling off our payroll. We will have some minimum salary players coming on. So, it gives a justification, if you will, to not to spend as much. The economics of baseball has been so sad this year and there is uncertainty about what 2021 will bring.”
The Rangers were projected to have a payroll in the $153MM range heading into the season, before the COVID-19 pandemic struck and the season was reduced to 60 games (thus reducing Texas’ outlay to roughly $65MM). Grant figures the club won’t go much, if at all, beyond the $100MM figure in 2021, though as Davis noted, some of that reduction was already baked into the future plans.www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/10/rangers-to-reduce-payroll-in-2021.htmlThis will be bigger than most people seem to think.

Here's another team warning it's fans to brace themselves. The Phils, a big market team.

For the most part saw this coming. There will be alot of teams not throwing money around that is why I could see QO not getting thrown around like they usually are. If we can take one or two year deals on players and do a quick rebuild hopefully the sox take their shot.

I think there will be better values in the trade route but not likely for relievers because they are already comparatively low priced. We'll see how it works out but I think this will be the most unusual off season since Marvin Miller got involved.

The question isn't if this will be a rough market, with little money to spend. It will be the worst market we've seen in a long time, maybe ever. It's really to what degree it's bad. How many Rich owners see a great opportunity and throw normal business out the window? How do agents handle top guy? Best long-term deal available or one year deals and try next year? Do some teams go nuclear?
Trades can be good, yet I still think we see record amount of guys non tendered that makes for a crazy deep free agent class and not many teams willing or able to spend. You'll have decent veterans just fighting to get a deal, as many teams will do what the Ranger plan on. Play the young cheap rookies.

I'm pretty sure there will be record numbers of non-tenders also. On the other hand, the Rule 5 draft should be interesting with tons of minimum wage guys available. Should be interesting. (A lot more interesting than 16 team playoffs.)
It's going to be a case of haves and have nots but not the usual suspects.

The red sox have an opportunity this off-season to get elite players on short deals bcs of this market. If they play the staying under the cap game. They will blow a big opportunity. With teams like the dodgers, yanks and others not in the market for those type of players. This ownership has never backed down from spending money, I don't see why they would now.

Guess the reds can't afford the QO.

I don't follow this stuff much any more but can't Bauer just turn down a Qualifying offer and go for a multi year deal with a team like the Red Sox? I apologize if it's a ignorant question. Isn't he an unrestricted free agent?

If I owned the Sox, given their current situation, I think I'd factor in that next year may well be a shortened season also, with a lot less gate receipts and miscellaneous sales. The world has changed and there is no guarantee it comes back even after next year. The market has dropped in a HUGE way. Now is probably not the time to do multiyear deals as players but Bauer may want security right now and the Sox may be able to lock him in cheaply. Lots of small market teams are not going to play on that deal. The Dodgers and Yanks are maxed out in salary aren't they ( comparatively ). Do a Martinez type deal and hold strong and they may well land him multi year for under $100 mil.

I believe it would be considered tampering for the Red Sox to talk with Trevor Bauer right now. The QO process won't happen until after the World Series and he's still under contract with the Reds until then.

I'm guessing the Sox are going to stay away from players with qualifying offers. Assuming the Reds don't tender him, he would be intriguing on a short-term contact as an anchor until Sale comes back and Eddie R. is hopefully recovered.
He has stated he only wants to go year-by-year, and that would be perfect for Boston. Boston can then turn around and trade him at the deadline for a future piece. That is assuming the team is not in serious contention.
Alas, I don't see the Reds giving up the compensation pick because someone is (maybe the Angels) going to sign him, regardless.

The only way I'd give up a second round pick for Bauer is if he signed for at least 4 years. Nothing short term. I'd be okay with that. I said I'd only offer a deal to a QO free agent in Realmuto, but Bauer would probably be worth it too. Bauer is a number 1 or 2 starter right now. The more interesting question is- Bauer versus Eduardo Rodriguez. Who do you like more to offer free agent money towards? I would probably lean Bauer.

The fact that he is going to Boston now might mean he wants to get more of a feel for the city before signing anywhere or it could just be to start other GM's thinking he's leaning toward Boston so they better pony upm the cash. Boston is very important to this project for him in a number of ways that haven't shaken down yet. I think it's a good sign. This guy is a real mercenary though isn't he?

Based on how Bauer uses Twitter he's almost certainly headed to Boston for something unrelated and just stirring the pot.

It's pretty simple to me. If Bauer comes attached with a QO, which I suspect he will despite the state of the game - although I could be very very wrong in that statement - then don't go after him. That 2nd round pick should be pretty valuable and not a pick they should punt - what is that the 33rd pick in the draft? They usually pick near there after a successful season - for their first pick.
If the Reds don't offer a QO, then to me it's a slam dunk that you go after him. If he's going year-to-year as he says, then soon there will be a year to go get him. Doesn't have to be next year if you're going to lose a draft pick.

It would be a best case to add him one year to the rotation.

Agree with those who want Bauer for more than one year to give up the second round pick. I can rationalize it by thinking we gave up Moncada and Kopech for Sale (although that was an extremely team friendly contract). Another thought that came to mind was if we pass on Bauer this year and he signs one year with someone else, he could join Cole next year in NY. Elephant in the room is still Cohen for the Mets who technically didn't lose any money this year. Even if he's just having fun with us, I love the Bauer twitter message. Schilling enjoyed the Boston - NY rivalry, maybe Bauer would like it too.

"Time Heals All Wounds" If not, it would appear that the Yankees would have to outbid others by quite a large margin. Possibly including their own deal with Cole. www.12up.com/posts/6070547-trevor-bauer-and-gerrit-cole-completely-hate-each-other-and-they-face-off-for-the-first-time-sunday

I project that teams in large markets with some cash to spend will be shopping, regardless of if they can host fans. This off-season, like the 2011 draft is a golden opportunity for the sox. My projection is most teams will cut back on spending like we haven't seen since the CBA in 2002. This will mean two significant things for the sox to watch: 1) Teams will be looking to offload contracts in trades, even at the cost of receiving little to nothing in return. 2) Qualifying offers that normally would deter teams, due to the potential loss of draft pick(s) by the signing team, will likely not be offered to players that would normally receive them. I think this will happen because teams often make qualifying offers solely to get a pick in return and don't typically expect the player to accept, which players may do this off-season in a down market. Teams may not be able to afford to pay these players approximately 18M/yr and so guys like Realmuto, Brantley, Bauer, and Springer may all hit the market w/o having a QO attached. Opportunities like this may not be available again where so much talent can be acquired at such a low price. I expect Bloom and FSG to take advantage.
I think there could be some fireworks made by the Red Sox front office this winter.

Soxin8, Exactly. However, if a QO is attached to trevor I would agree with not going after him. There is this fella named kluber who lives in Winchester, ma. Who has been injured prone the last couple years and could be a comeback candidate who could sign a team friendly deal. I do not see texas picking up his option if they are cutting salary. This off-season will be fun the red sox and a handle full of other teams will have alot of bargain shopping to do.
