Very encouraging debut. Has to reel it in a bit, but with the lack of hard contact he's going to have a role in our future, whether it's out of the rotation or the pen.

This has likely already become a cliche, but he reminds me of good-Justin Masterson. He looks mostly fastball/slider, but especially with the two-seamer, that gives him three looks. Could be enough. Has been a while since I've thought about Masterson, but I don't remember his slider being quite as filthy as what we're seeing today?? Boy, is this start a nice surprise. Was mostly thinking about that slingy motion, fundamentally a two-pitch mix. But, yeah, not exactly the same: I think good-Justin Masterson threw slightly harder, too. But that sling, which makes me wince, is really effective.

Only issue I see with Houck is decline in his velocity. But he was throwing two-seamers, which might partly explain it. He looked good, though.

He threw one or two decent ones, one which got a soft lineout against a lefty. But the other handful he threw were basically throwaway non-competitive pitches. If he could learn a legit splitter, we could really dream...

We need an impact middle order bat next year. JD is probably toast. JD Mendoza is in the lineup for his defensive value. Hide him in the 8-hole.

Houck clearly is pitching for the wrong team. He doesn't look like a Pinata

Intentionally walking JDM ahead of almost anyone seems insulting .

Houck looked great! Velocity dip something that will strengthen?

Houck looked great! Velocity dip something that will strengthen? I think it was more pitch selection than velocity dip. He's generally been maintaining velocity deep into his games.

Before the game Max Scherzer sent Houck a video wishing him luck. Some college, Missouri.

Houck looked great! Velocity dip something that will strengthen? Agree. He was 94-95 in the first couple of innings then dipped to 91-93. My impression is that he was super adrenalin juiced for his 1st start then settled in. It would be interesting to know what his historical velo has been. One thing is clear....he has a lot of movement on his pitches and that led to funky swings for the uninitiated.....Will this carry forward or will opponents adjust? He is a bit wild....a lot of pitches way outside the zone. That could become an Achilles heel. Still, his was probably the most encouraging pitching performance of any newcomer this year.

Let's not get too excited here ... his pERA was only 0.48. That means he only pitched well enough to allow 1/4 of a run, not 0.
The two hits he gave up were legit: hard hit and with bad launch angles. They came on his first and sixth hitters, though. He had a bit of luck in that the Corey Dickerson soft liner and Jorge Alforo deep fly to right (his next to last batter) were both hit to catchable spots; the former had a bad launch angle and the second was hit hard (98.0), and usually one of them would have fallen in. But you could hardly wish for anything more comfortable in a debut than no cheap hits at all, not even the usual number. No distractions from the task. The unp seemed good, too, except for that one mind-boggling perfect strike he missed.
Can't wait till tomorrow to look at the pitch breakdown and analysis.

Okay, so a few pitches were "just a bit outside". Glad I watched that game instead of the Celts.

And we won't know for some time if Houck is better served as a RH late inning setup man. As far as I know they still haven't developed a starter in more than a decade or so. I think Jay Groome has the best shot at ending that. I'm still convinced on Mata yet. But like Houck, look forward to him getting a chance to establish himself as a starter, too.

He looks promising, and I look forward to his chance to develop... but he might well be better suited for the bullpen in the end. But for now, that start was about the best thing to happen this season. That and Dalbec’s laser sho... wait, is that copyrighted?

Bradley finally gets a day off Verdugo in center.
JD has shot at breaking below Mendoza tonight. Cleanup hitter.
