9/22 - 9/24 Red Sox vs. Orioles Series Thread

Puello sits again. JBJ in 5-hole. Sox have clinched tiebreaker over O's. Not sure if the same tiebreakers are used for draft order. KC BOS AZ is the order if the 3 tie. Which for the draft, AZ goes ahead of BOS. www.espn.com/mlb/standings/gridSorry, which tiebreaker is that? I had been going with AZ having the better record in 2019, so Boston would pick first in the event of a tie.

You are correct. 2019 would be the tiebreaker.

When Pivetta was acquired, I thought to myself "Hey the Sox found their next Joe Kelly." That still sounds about right to me. Hopefully he can stick as a starter better than Kelly could. If not, he'll end up a middle reliever like Kelly. I’m not the scouting expert many on this board are, but he doesn’t remind me of Kelly at all. His curve looked like his best pitch with a 94-95 mph fastball and a slider. In last nite’s game he pitched well for someone making his Sox debut after missing much time out of the Rotation. He likely picked up some useful changes in Pawtucket. His approach was different: high FB, slider heavy, lower FB velo, decent control. Also, different coaches, change of scenery, maturation, good health in the middle of a pandemic, no fans, whatever. It wouldn’t be the first time high expectations are finally actualized after initial struggles. I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues evolving and succeeding. He seems smart as well as talented. IMO we have to stop projecting his future in the context of disgruntled fans from his former team where he struggled.

If not, he'll end up a middle reliever like Kelly. No, terrible comp. Kelly had been with an organization that was known for developing pitchers, and they had tried different pitch mixes with him. He never had a repertoire that screamed "starter" and there was always a debate about his role -- hence all of the experimentation with a proper pitch mix (which continued pretty dramatically with us). He had great success as a reliever as a rookie, less as a starter. The opposite was true in his second, and it was looking like he could really start, but he was less effective as a starter in his third year, so they dealt him to us.
Pivetta is a guy with better stuff and who has always been viewed as a pure starter. He was sent to the pen by the Phillies only because he had sucked at starting in his second year, after a solid rookie season. And it's clear from his numbers that he has never been given the vaguest idea of how to pitch.
Points they appear to have in common:
- Homo sapiens
- subset, MLB pitcher
- Throws hard

Has Pivetta ever broken a window working on his change?

His curve looked like his best pitch with a 94-95 mph fastball and a slider. Not in terms of stuff. In terms of career track record. Kelly was a starter, then a reliever with the Cards. Then he came to Boston and they tried him as a starter, then ended up as a reliever. That's the path I could see with Pivetta.

Eovaldi's first five fastballs; 98,98,99,100,100.

Eovaldi's first five fastballs; 98,98,99,100,100. I hope the exit velocity is even faster. #completethetank

Looks like the Sox are not really interested in getting a top pick in the draft. Good

Having to feel ambivalent about winning games is probably the thing I hate the most about this bum ass team.

In 2 years, at a cost of 34 million dollars, Nate Eovaldi has basically done nothing. Let us hope that the next 2 years he will do something.

Today's the day I finally give in and join the tankies, and I tune in in the 3rd inning, and... oof.

It would be one thing if he threw some innings and wasn't that great. He has basically not been out there.

He now has 25 K and 2 BB in 21 IP over his last 4 starts, which will end up being his last 4 of the year. I'll have all the metrics for these starts -- FIP, xFIP, pERA from Statcast and me, etc. -- tomorrow. But they are going to be spectacular, and if they also turn out to be real, I'll be a happy man.

I hope so. Assuming normal seasons, we need to have him on the mound for 320-360 regular season innings of good pitching to be a real difference maker.

Within an hour, ChiSox will have clinched tiebreaker over NYY. NYY has tiebreaker over MINN.
Atl is clinching tiebreaker over Cubs. Braves Magic # will be 2 over Cubs. Atl series this weekend will lose meaning.

Atl series this weekend will lose meaning. The 2 / 3 seed only mattered if they ended up facing the Cubs in the NLCS. The teams fighting for the 6 and 7 seeds are all pretty much equally threatening (or not).
The key point is that they are praying for strong outings from Kyle Wright and Bryce Wilson (and one from Huascar Ynoa in between would be a pleasant bonus).
