Understanding we'll be talking about Yorke in the Pawtucket (alt site) thread, I want to also make sure some of this is archived in a personal thread. Our 1st round pick has been quick to impress:

Another hit in today's game. He's reached in 5 of his first 6 plate appearances so far. Look at him wait back on that breaking ball and spank it the other way for a double 😲

If Yorke pans out, I’ll give the FO mad props. These picks that people look at as crazy are amazing when it turns out someone really did see something everyone else missed.

J. D. Martinez will be much better next year when he's able to take tips from his hitting guru Nick Yorke. How is it possible this kid looks so polished.

It's almost as if the scouts knew what they were doing when they sold the FO on him!

For someone as good as he is, I'm surprised that he would even need to do something like that with his footwork at all to have success, let enough get good enough at it to fly against pro pitchers.

As I recall from an early age he was coached by his mother who was a very talented softball player.

Yeah I don't see the footwork thing as a good thing. He got caught out in front, but was able to adjust his body to send the ball the other way. That's a neat little adjustment but not something I'd want him doing often.

I'm not so sure that wasn't part of the plan. I'm going to wait to see if that move gets repeated. He doesn't appear to have been caught unprepared at all.

Norm, he did it as he was swinging. You're saying you think he planned to pick up his back foot as he swung? That's madness.

He changed his stance till both feet were lined up in the direction the ball ended up travelling. It is a bit nuts.

Here was his other hit to right field off Mata. (The other double was to center field)

Every kid who comes out of HS makes his debut against pitchers who just came out of HS. We have no way of knowing how well they would fare if they had to face a top AAA prospect instead ...
But adapting this quickly certainly seems unlikely.

The way he changed his stance while the pitch was coming to the plate reminds me of a tennis player's footwork returning serve.

Even more unlikely considering how long it's likely been since he's played any baseball. This was a late camp callup.

The videos look good on him. I can not wait to see what he does in his first season in pro ball.

Here was his other hit to right field off Mata. (The other double was to center field) Check it out. He does a smaller version of the same thing in this screen capture from that video, with a shot to right though not down the foul line. I don't know what to say. He is... different (click to expand).

I did some research, and it looks like the hind-foot thing Yorke does that people above have mentioned is called a "scissor swing". Jose Altuve and Kris Bryant do it. There is a good discussion of it in here: www.tewkshitting.com/what-are-scissor-swings/

I would have selected a slightly different domain name if I were Mr. Tewksbary.

So the first video where Yorke rockets one down the right foul line seems to be an extreme case of that, with the second video more typical. He must have picked that up somewhere.

Does anyone have Yorke's final stat line? I believe he went 7 for 10.
The median player with his pedigree should be expected to be a total disaster against AAA pitching. A .200 hitter has about a 1 in 100,000 chance of going 7 for 10. You need to be a .297 hitter to get it to 1 in 1,000.
We already have enough information to significantly upgrade our projections for how good he'll be.
