Ok, good. I didn't want to be interpreted as being negative toward the guy.

Nick Yorke's stats in June are simply stupendous: - .983 OPS - BB/K of almost 2!!!! (even when you count the called strikeout he got ejected for the other day 😂) - More XBHs (5) than Ks (4) The definition of pure hitter.

Am I the only one surprised to see that he's got nine stolen bases?

Am I the only one surprised to see that he's got nine stolen bases? So, it's a little surprising, but context is key, as always. The system's top 10 SB leaders are all in Salem or Worcester. www.soxprospects.com/stats/hitting.php?split=0&page=1&sortby=SB&team=0&year=2021&type=1&min=0 Part of that phenomenon is because those levels have speedsters (Rafaela, Wilson, Lugo, Duran, Jimenez, and Gettys can move), but like, Jeter Downs isn't really a plus speed guy either. Part of that might be development purposes, part of that might be the teams those affiliates are playing (are they any good, do they have catchers who can throw and pitchers who can hold guys on. HOWEVER, the biggest thing is probably that Low-A is testing the 2-pickoff-moves-per-PA rule. I haven't seen anything yet on how that's affecting SB numbers, but that obviously gives runners a bit more of an advantage. (Meanwhile, Triple-A is testing the larger bases.) I'm a little surprised that the Drive doesn't have more guys up there, with High-A testing the "pitcher must step off the rubber to throw over" rule, but that roster really doesn't have burners outside of Brannen, who's back below the Mendoza line although he's walking a ton. It could be that rule just really hampers the LHP pickoff move more than it encourages basestealing.

Yorke's first professional HR included below: He certainly looks the part and he is only 19. Lost 25 lbs between draft year and full year of pros, that is good makeup. It would be fun to have another Betts, Devers, Xander, a guy who just cruised thru the minors forcing his way to the show.

Am I the only one surprised to see that he's got nine stolen bases? I am but I mostly think of it the same way as Cecchini’s 50 steals

HOT TAKE: I genuinely believe that he's the best hitting prospect in the system. I'm fully aware that a good chunk of his hits in June were fluky but the process is so damn right: He's starting to walk a lot while reducing the Ks drastically. The batted balls distribution (40% GB, 60% LD+FB), The spray charts (34.3% pull, 26.9% cent, 38.9% oppo). I think the organization views him highly, they invited him to the big club camp after all, and we got a fine young hitter under our hands.

Yorke vs Casas would be an interesting argument. I’d give the edge to Casas because I believe he’s going to be a truly special hitter in the MLB (Freddie Freeman comp has always looked good to me). That being said, Yorke is definitely no slouch. Yorke has taken an aggressive assignment and hit extremely well after his slow start and only seems to be getting better. He also hasn’t had a single at bat against a pitcher younger than him. I think Casas will be the better hitter overall, but Yorke could be a pretty special hitter too if he keeps developing and puts on a little muscle.

I was hoping Casas was going to move thru the minors quickly as most of the real studs do but covid got in the way. He is still someone who could but Yorke is looking like he could be one of those guys. True studs don't spend much time in the minors, it happens but the great ones move quickly. The great ones make their own path.

I find it amazing that anyone would hesitate to choose between Casas or Yorke as a hitter or even as a prospect. Casas is a no-doubt average major leaguer with a chance to be a real star. As a hitter he has the hit tool, power, and patience. He’s rightly the top prospect on this site and rated far above Yorke by everyone. Yorke is an intriguing bat who’s had a few good games and shown glimpses suggesting he could be something special.

Eh, when you look deeper into the numbers, it's not that "amazing" to hesitate between them but let me start by repeating myself: I love Triston Casas. When you look closer, the similarities between them are eye popping: - The Sox surprised the draft world when they picked them in the 1st round out of HS: They usually don't draft 1st basemen this early in the draft for Casas' case and Yorke's pick shocked everybody. - They aggressively placed them in full season ball their first year. - They both scuffed in their first month: Casas 35.2% K rate in April in Greeneville. Yorke 23.1% K rate in May in Salem - They both made adjustments and dominated their league in the second month: Casas 18.9% K% and Yorke 12.7% - The team invited them to alt site/sim city were they showed glimpse of their immense talent. Like I said I love them both and it comes to personal preferences to who you pick between them. I just prefer pure hitters who spray line drives to all fields while dominating the strike zone to sluggers with great plate discipline. Of course Casas has a longer track record while Yorke has been competing for just 2 months but at same time he's a slow runner who swings from the left side and hitting the ball on the ground WAY too much this season. Shifts would kill his batting average if adjustments aren't made. In conclusion, we can all agree that they're exciting to follow this year and the organization is lucky to have them both.
