His defensive versatility would very welcomed on this roster as currently constructed. He's played literally every position minus catcher in his career and we need both a backup SS and CF (if Verdugo is now the CF). So he's a good fit in that sense, a great clubhouse presence, and has some offensive upside against LHP. On the downside, if you view Renfroe as the guy you want to work in a platoon situation, he and Kiké are both below average bats against RHP so thats not ideal.. Is he a legit backup SS?

For a day here and there, yes. If Xander had to go on the IL, thought, you'd probably start Arauz on some days vs. RHP, depending on who's pitching.
He was on my list of best fits. Besides sharing the 2B job, he gives you a really good defensive option in CF, and if you somehow can't sign JBJ, he and Renfroe can split starts with Verdugo playing the other position; that would likely be better than handing CF over to Amora or the like. If they do re-sign JBJ (and they had better!), you have that choice when you want to sit him, or have the capacity to sit both him and Benny.
This also doesn't preclude signing a 2B like Cesar Hernandez and trading Arroyo. We have no idea how high they actually are on him, but he looks to be a second-division starter who's not a particularly useful backup, because of his reverse platoon split.

I'll be honest, I didn't know Kiké Hernandez and Enrique Hernandez were the same person (and never heard of either before this offseason).

Best player available in his role, too.
Really, the only position where guys you hoped they could have signed are being picked off is closer. Excluding QO guys, the best starting pitcher, CF, and 2B are still out there.

Not terrible not a bargain though. Seems like ownership might have been tired of getting killed for not spending

Overall a solid signing I think. Was hoping for 5 or 6 million a year AAV but not going to complain about 7. Not going to move the needle much but I like his versatility.

2 years, $14 million for a journeyman utility infielder/outfielder. Not impressed. They could have taken a couple of flyers on closers to build out their bullpen and still have money left over.

Fantastic signing. Payed market price but this is a baseball player. Has sneaky power and it opens up all kinds of options defensively.

And they still can take some flyers on relievers. Don't see how this signing would preclude them from doing so.

Not terrible not a bargain though. Seems like ownership might have been tired of getting killed for not spending Ha-Seong Kim got 4/$28M...exact same AAV which was reportedly to rich for the Sox blood. I guess perhaps the Sox valued Kiké's ability to play CF

Wonder if this means we could see one of Arroyo/Chavis/Munoz being DFA'd or packaged in a trade in the coming weeks. Unless the plan is for Hernandez to primarily be CFer instead of 2B, which I hope is not the case (would mean no JBJ).

I don’t get this signing. He is a journey man type player. The Red Sox are not likely going to contend for a playoff spot for 2021. Why waste salary on Hernandez vs taking a salary dump such as Myers, with the Red Sox assuming some salary to acquire a cost controlled starting pitching prospect.

I'd say this takes them out of the hunt for jbj. They must have alot of trust in the sp depth we have.

I'll be honest, I didn't know Kiké Hernandez and Enrique Hernandez were the same person (and never heard of either before this offseason). If you know that Kiké is often spelled Quique (same pronunciation) itâs easier to see it as a nickname for Enrique.

Pretty much goes against what the FO is trying to accomplish. I’d say verdugo In CF and Kiki some late inning double switches outing Verdugo in RF

He was -0.1 fWAR last year in 48 games, and 1.2 fWAR in 130 games the year before that. Had a strong 2018, but it's clear that's an outlier season in his career. I also get visions of him becoming Cora's new Eduardo Nunez (because energy or something!), overused and playing against every right handed pitcher despite struggling to hit against them. Mehhhh, rather have spent our limited money somewhere else.

I'm not sure I understand the thinking that because the Red Sox signed Hernandez, they're done for the winter.
