Makes sense, albeit super lame.

I am curious if this is as much about college ball as the Sox. I wonder how that season will happen. Colleges are still mostly on-line, teams are huge (so harder to quarantine than hoops, which has been slightly more successful than football ), and, unlike the two money sports, not worth it for most schools. To what degree will they be able to have a “regular” season?

Some other students are collecting videos and posting them online and sending them to deans, who have the power to disenroll them if they are breaking the rules (because they had to sign a document saying they would abide by the rules). I'm glad I'm teaching 100% online.

I'm glad I'm teaching 100% online. [ In my small rural college town, the university is still boarded up, so no students to speak of. But who, then, are the young, unmasked idiots who have dominated every downtown outside table? The other day, walking to my car and wearing my Sox hat and a mask, a couple of kids who had obviously drunk too much, jeered at my mask AND lib city baseball hat. Not college kids but still young and stupid. Such behavior combined with the variant strains, the reticence of the Cactus League to opening their parks to players, and having to re-start the failed vax program, I just don’t see how ST or the season can start on time. I hope the players and MLB can work out a sensible solution.

All right, deleted my response to the off-topic stuff. As for the season starting... any possibility it will be dalyed, either ST or regular season?

Came back to catch mine, but mods took care of it (thanks!). As for ST being delayed in Florida.. I doubt it on a whole state basis, unless the entire state is hammered. Risk of starting something unintended (again).. DeSantis has been the king of the country thus far in attempting to keep as much open as possible so far thru these horrible times to stop from ruining the state economy any more than possible and it seems to have worked. Locals are still allowed some leeway of course and the southern part of the state isn't as.. Well, let's just say it doesn't burn bright red as much as a cooler blue breeze and about 3/4 of the teams with ST in Florida are in south florida now, unlike 25-30y ago when was only a couple. That said.. I "do" remember when Florida was at it's worst on the pandemic case wise and the southern part of the state was in kind of a lock down. Don't remember the countie(s) involved. Palm beach comes to mind, but it didn't last long. My 2c is DeSantis isn't going to have any part of canceling ST, nor allow the counties to either for something this big.

It's a PR offer. The actual substance of the plan is expanded playoffs in exchange for universal DH, which the union already (rightfully) rejected.

MLBPA rejected (and didn't counter) MLB's proposal for a delayed start to the season. As a result, players will start reporting on or close to Feb. 17. The first spring training game is on Feb. 27, and the first regular season game is on April 1.

I don’t think that MLB and the MLBPA has made a solid agreement without delay for a decade now. Clean house. Get rid of Tony Clark. Get rid of Manfred.

I don’t think that MLB and the MLBPA has made a solid agreement without delay for a decade now. Clean house. Get rid of Tony Clark. Get rid of Manfred. There's a contradiction hidden in that wish. I hope the MLBPA does have a savvy, tough negotiator because they're going to need one. But that will insure a lengthy, difficult set of negotiations, delaying any agreement. And Manfred isn't going anywhere. He's exactly who the owners want as a frontman.

So you're basically wishing harm to the game? This ensures a lockout, instead of both sides giving a taking a little for the good of the game. Both sides need to clean house. Not just including Manfred here.

Note that if the players made a counter offer, they would be agreeing to reopen negotiations on a matter already collectively bargained. They'd have lost all of their leverage. This isn't just the players being obstinate.
Meanwhile, MLB's offer was literally an offer they'd already made and that the players had rejected. I wouldn't call that bargaining in good faith.
Not saying the MLBPA is perfect but this is NOT on the players.

Honestly, wouldn't surprise me if this sticks. Kind of silly that they send guys across the state, day-of, for an exhibition game.
