Let's put the cart alllll the way in front of the horse here- let's assume that e-rod doesnt want to extend and 2/3 of houck/mata/seabold are shoving in aaa. whats a reasonable return for a close to ceiling rodriguez?

The Red Sox got Cespedes who was later dealt for Porcello when Jon Lester had half a season to go before being dealt. The best prospect deal the Sox could have gotten and decided against included Dylan Bundy who was highly regarded at the time. E-Rod is good, but he's below what Lester was. My guess is that E-Rod will stick around. Just a feeling.

Eduardo Rodriguez already been on record that he wants to stay with the Sox for the rest of his career. He probably would take less to stay. I'd rather keep Eduardo than to deal him and risk losing him if you deal him and he feels differently when you go to resign him in free agency.

That being said-
JD Martinez Garret Richards Matt Barnes Adam Ottavino Kiké Hernandez Christian Vazquez Nathan Eovaldi (eat money)
And maybe...Chris Sale if the Padres or someone gets desperate at the trade deadline.
The Sox will have a lot of ammo to unload at the trade deadline. This is where Bloom can acquire the best prospects he's ever got.
I believe the 2021 deadline is the perfect opportunity for Bloom to really jumpstart this team into sustainability for the next 5 years. His best opportunity, in fact.

I’ve felt the deadline could be a huge time period for us as well if we’re out. A few expiring contracts and guys with only one year left.

Ottavino will deff get us some talent at the deadline if he has a good yr. Maybe Richards depending on how he pitches. I'll tell ya the farm is getting rebuilt pretty fast under bloom.

I hate this conversation before the season even starts! Though what does ERod want for an extension is a good conversation and if it's crazy I guess it could make sense.
A big difference between ERod and Lester is age. ERod will be entering his age 29 season in 2022, Lester was age 31. Lester also had a lot more wear and tear. So if ERod is like 2019 ERod again I think his value is equal to Lester. Yet for those reasons he's a great option to extend also.

The Sox have openly admitted that this is a building year. Sure they would like to compete, but they should know the difference between championship contender and playoff contender.
Baseball is has turned into basketball the past 3 out of 4 years. The best and most talented teams have won. The Sox. Astros. Dodgers. The exception was a Nationals team with a loaded rotation.

It's fun to remember that we traded Andrew Miller on July 31 for .... Eduardo Rodriguez, a promising 21YO in AA. Miller was a tremendous bullpen weapon at the time. The O's made it to the LCS, but lost 4 straight.

Hard to say what he would be dealt for but it’s a great situation to be in. We all know pitching goes for a ton at trade deadline. Let’s hope a bunch of teams are in it and if Boston isn’t then welll...
What would we get? 2 top 10 prospects none of which are top 3.

Could/would/should the Red Sox consider trading Chris Sale at the deadline? Let’s say he gets 3 - 5 starts before the deadline & looks good. Would teams be interested? Should the Red Sox be interested?

Should the Red Sox be interested? I don't see the Red Sox being able to mount a deep playoff run without Sale, and I'd rather they aim for that in the next 2-3 years while we have Devers/Xander/Verdugo in their prime. Not sure how trading Sale would get them their, and I think the chances that he comes back and contributes is higher than that he bombs out AFTER they can trade him for a notable return.

Should the Red Sox be interested? Too early to talk about the trade deadline. And no. If Sale is healthy he's somebody you want to keep. And I doubt other teams would take on his contract. But bigger than that for me, the man has made it perfectly clear he has no desire to play anywhere else but Boston. So you have a pitcher, who if he gets healthy, can possibly reclaim his ace status and he is a guy who screams Red Sox lifer. I'd say no, enjoy his pitching if he's healthy and good. If he's not nobody is going to want him anyways. The Red Sox don't need to get rid of everybody who has a contract. There's room on the payroll for an effective Chris Sale.

While Rodriguez isn't quite Lester, the difference here is that they would undoubtedly be looking to acquire prospects and not established Major Leaguers, such as Cespedes. I feel like should the scenario arise that trading Rodriguez at the deadline is a viable option, you would get a fairly decent return for him considering 1) he doesn't carry a heavy price tag and you could probably eat some of his money, and 2) you've seen what Chaim Bloom has been able to acquire for Workman/Hembree, Kevin Pillar, Mitch Moreland, Springs/Mazza, Josh Fricking Osich, and Andrew Benintendi coming off of a bear of a year. Am I saying Rodriguez will return multiple top 100 prospects, no. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a desperate surprise contender give up one top 100 guy and a couple of lower level guys with some helium.

But I wouldn't be surprised to see a desperate surprise contender give up one top 100 guy and a couple of lower level guys with some helium. I think it depends. If E-Rod is pitching well and the FO is getting vibes he'd sign for a reasonable extension (my guess is there are about four players I think that want to lock in with the Sox if their pay is reasonable and those 4 are Sale who I believe wants to end his career with the Sox, X, Vazquez, and E-Rod), then I think they hang onto him. If he signs a reasonable extension then you're still getting a guy with 3 or 4 good years to give which may exceed the value of the prospects you'd be receiving for a rental. I guess what I'm trying to say is that E-Rod could be a vital part of the next really strong contending Red Sox team. The jury is still out on that, but we'll see what happens.

Starling Marte would make a ton of sense for us. I have no reason for thinking this other than the last name made it come up in my mind, but I wonder what the price would be on Ketel Marte. The D-Backs will likely be sellers and he could shore up second or move to one of the outfield spots if/when Jeter Downs is ready to come in full time.

His current contract runs through 2024. 21:$6M, 22:$8M, 23:$10M club option ($1M buyout), 24:$12M club option ($1.5M buyout).

The Mets are sure in a bind, and we seem to have a surplus of multi-positional players that may be of assistance, what if anything could we get for Chavis and/or Marwin?

Go get Brad Hand & Daniel Hudson from Washington, their falling out of it at 20 - 23 and in last place. I think they could really help the pitching staff.

Since they already owe us one, maybe the Sox turn one of these two players plus the prospect owed into one even better prospect? I wouldn't be against it. I've appreciated Marwin's defensive capabilities at multiple positions, even though his bat has been sub par, but the Mets need bodies that can man multiple positions while their stable gets healthy. Both Chavis and Marwin could give them guys they can plug in, in the interim that are probably better than their in house candidates (the few that remain). Marwin alone is probably > Pillar because of his defensive versatility and his above average play defensively pretty much everywhere. The key would be who could we get?

They need bodies but they're not going to mortgage the future to put scotch tape on the leaking ship. What would you trade for one of those guys?

This is going to be a fun year for the rumor mill. The red sox have a bulk of RP and SP while having alot of up and down bats. Will bloom add more high upside talent and sell to teams in tough spots? If the sox find themselves 4-5 games out of it will they unload to add significant talent? Should be a fun one. Let the rumors start....

Being so close to the luxury cap it will be interesting. I don’t have any doubts that we’d go over if we’re winning and look like a WS contender though.

It's interesting how success has turned the team from sellers into buyers.
If Chris Sale returns as the midseason pitching acquisition, perhaps the team should add one more big bat. Two players strike me as possible targets.
Carlos Santana. This is predicated on Dalbec never figuring it out. Casas is the long term solution at first anyway so we need a bridge to him. Santana is owed $7M this year and $10 next; it's not impossible to add him and stay under the cap. Send Marwin Gonzalez and a prospect heavy package in exchange for Santana and money. I'd include Duran as a centerpiece. Royals may bite. Santana slots in behind Devers and lengthens the lineup. Could also serve as an emergency catcher.
Nelson Cruz. This is trickier. Cruz would have to DH, moving Martinez to LF. Martinez hasn't been terrible there this year and he likes playing D. Cruz can still hit and he'd love to play here. He's in the last year of his contract, but it's $13M. Ouch. It would take a lot of prospects to move that much money. Maybe you could go over the cap for him. A downside would be he'd only be a PH in National League parks.
