There's 100% chance he slammed his hand on the desk when he got sniped in some game or other. Bad luck, but there's still some fib in "accidentally bumped." I've had friends who would move with the controller during particularly tense moments. Possible it's something like that? That said... you're probably right. signed, guy who once broke his hand hitting a wall (that was not as padded as I thought it was) while playing pickup hoops. I once had to go in and tell a college track coach I hurt my calf reading Kafka. He called in the other coach to hear my story.

The A's were playing at home, so he presumably hurt himself at his home. The manager (if we take his word as accurate) said he accidentally hit it on his desk; if he's playing at a desk it's most likely a PC game since he's likely to have a big fancy TV and couch setup (and no desk nearby) if it were a console . If he's playing on PC and he's any good, he'll be doing mouse and keyboard not controller, especially if it's a game that would inspire him to move his hands. It's basically impossible to accidentally bump a hand via mouse and keyboard on the desk in a way that would fracture a pinky. Hence my smashing table theory.

O's John Means is pitching a beauty 😉 in Seattle. Tune in if you have the chance.

How does a ML manager not know the rule book? You get paid how much and barely have a job to do in-game? Out of the 4 major sports an ML manager has the least impact so I would expect them to know every last detail for the millions that they make. If Bill Belichick doesn't know that a lineman can go in motion and do this or that, fine. It's annoying, but there's a million of other things going on during the course of a game that you can excuse it.

Through 8 innings John Means has not allowed a hit or a walk and hasn't hit a batter. Seattle has had one base runner who struck out but took 1st because strike 3 was a wild pitch. The base runner was then thrown out attempting to steal. Tough way to lose a perfect game if Means finishes up the no hitter.

I was really impressed by him against the Sox, and he is obviously still dealing.

I hope he gets a job with the Rockies, Orioles, White Sox, Rangers or Reds. 33 HR shy of 700. Has to be tough to be so close, yet so far away.

On a team with nothing to play for it could be a marketing campaign for them. If he gets within 10 I can see him being a role player for a loser until he gets to that number. Depends on how much he wants it.

Giancarlo Stanton is operating on another plane right now. Anything in the strike zone is a mistake at this point

What an absolutely amazing player in 2000s. The last ten years have obviously been forgettable, but wow he was good.

Having watched the first 12 years of Pujols career, it is wild that he was bad enough for long enough to end up with a sub-.300 career batting average. His batting average with St. Louis was 17 points higher than his OBP with Los Angeles.

He is so close to both though.

His batting average with St. Louis was 17 points higher than his OBP with Los Angeles. I've wondered if players legacies' being increasingly thought about in terms of WAR rather than HR and hit totals might encourage some aging guys to retire sooner. Pujols finished 2016 with over 90 fWAR but he's now at 87. He also fell under 100 bWAR during that time. He went from 591 to 667 homers since then, but his BA/wOBA also fell from .309/.403 to .298/.386. It's kind of a shame that we'll have to place a mental caveat on his career numbers, like "and he'd seem like an even more impressive player if he'd quit half a decade earlier."

For one thing, they often get paid their biggest bucks in those downward years. For another, I think pride more often says “it’ll come back” than “you are embarrassing yourself.” Hence guys in far more dangerous sports like MMA, boxing, etc who keep going. And finally, WAR will never have the ring of HRs, etc. The classic stats are part of history... you can’t rear-engineer the excitement of a chase for Ruth’s WAR (I had to look up the career leader).

I'd never really taken time to think about it in these terms, but Pujols is the best post-integration first baseman by a long-shot, right? Like Murray, McCovey, Bagwell, Thomas were all no-question Hall of Famers but also definitely a tier below him. Am I forgetting someone?
