this is what baseball has turned into. Eovaldi basically hasn't pitched for 2 years. But now, we got everybody being the GD Tampa Rays..... It may be just one game, but Cora absolutely has either bought in or outsmart himself there. He is your #1 guy. If you can't give him 100 pitches and 6 innings...what the hell is the point. I agree with this broadly... but not with Eovaldi. For one thing, if he’s the #1, they are doomed. ERod better be back soon, and Sale in a few months. But more importantly, Nate simply isn’t very good after a few times through. So he got into the sixth and, with the top of the lineup coming up, he’d done his job. My guess is Cora knows that 3rd time through is bad for Nate, and the timing worked to pull him. If Kiké doesn’t boot the grounder and if the big FA reliever signing is not mediocre, it is still 0-0. Add: don’t let that choice be the rake away. The Sox have 1 hit! They’ve fielded badly. Renfroe is a human fan. Andriese looks mediocre. etc etc. Pulling Eovaldi is a hiccup. The rest? Could be a problem. he is the #1 now. he hasn't pitched for --- in 2 years. People want to believe this 3rd times through the order theory, as if it is gospel. it isn't. it has its own fallacies built in. This was an unnecessary pull. it is the 1st game of the year. For crying out loud, did he really need to be yanked in a 0-0 game ?? edit. sorry. no need for that profanity.

No it's not. It's Nathan Evoladi and it's game 1 of 162. Career IP by Eovaldi: 2012: 119.1 2013: 106.1 2014: 199.2 2015: 154.1 2016: 124.2 2017: 0.0 2018: 111.0 2019: 67.2 2020: 48.1 The argument really is if he should have faced 1 more hitter or not since there was only 1 out. It's literally insane logic. No one's suggesting he should be throwing 150 pitches. But I think he can finish the inning especially on opening day. What horrible logic. And that logic is why we are going to lose this game. That logic didn’t get ‘em one hit so far. So even if pulling Eovaldi 2 outs early was a bad choice, 0 runs can’t win.

And that logic is why we are going to lose this game. And not because the offense can't put up a single run or that Kiké can't field an easy DP? It's all because Cora pulled Eovaldi, who is notoriously unhealthy and ineffective 3 times through the lineup, after 89 pitches? Gerrit Cole was pulled after 97 on opening day on 5.1 IP John Means has someone warming up behind him on 6.0 IP and 77 pitches. HYUN-JIN RYU was pulled after 5.1 IP and 92 pitches. ZACK GREINKE was pulled after 6.0 IP and 82 pitches thrown. It's opening day.

Off-topic, but I see JD is in mid-2020 form.

Off-topic, but I see JD is in mid-2020 form. JD was late on that last pitch against a guy who is not exactly a flamethrower. Means has pitched well today so it’s not like everybody but JD has hit him. I do agree with idea that Nate had plenty left so no need to pull him. Maybe he gets the next guy out on three pitches. So, yes, he could complete the inning under the right circumstances. Andriese had it working in the next inning. Let’s not give up on him yet.

To say our hitters missed some hittable pitches vs. Means today would be an understatement.

I have never been impressed by Taylor. Until he gets an unassisted triple play here.

Why do I get the feeling Means will give up something like 10 runs in 1.2 IP in his next outing?

Clever: Renfroe *pretended* to botch that play to trick Orioles into an out. That kind of headiness might get us ahead of Baltimore yet.

Ok. Losing opening day. Appreciate the good debate boys. This is the game thread, it should be allowed to be a little melodramatic. I never mean to step on anyone's toes, hope folks remember that.
That said...cold day...offense is harder to come by. Hope we don't become over reliant on pulling starters early. Having starters do deeper in games is a good, proven strategy to winning baseball. Not gonna jump to conclusions on 1 game.
Go Sox !!

It's a good thing Dalbec seems pretty solid picking balls in the dirt, because it feels like he's gonna get a lot of those from our infield.

I have never been impressed by Taylor. 11 of 17 pitches for strikes? 1/3 of an inning 3 hits? I’m not just saying today, anyway. He has always appeared to me to be a fastball pitcher with an average fastball. He looks like he peaks at around 94. He just doesn’t wow me. Not asking for his head.
