Darwinzon’s delivery just looks so violent. I have to wonder if he would benefit from slowing it down a little.

Gotta give Darwinzon some margin for error for walks, I didn’t like the decision to bring him in there
I do think there is something to Cora wanting to give him a look in that spot in a 7 run game
Dudes gonna walk people, hell sometimes he’s gonna walk 2-3 ppl. He’s probably not gonna allow more than 5.0 hits per 9 though

Don't let the lucky home run make you forget the fact that Cora lacks the spine to drop JD Martinez in the order.

Mazza hands the ball off to Springs. Major 2020 Red Sox vibes from the Rays right now.

Marwin seems to play solid defense wherever you put him...he's growing on me.

How about dropping down Devers tho...Every swing it seems that he tries to hit the ball 500 feet...as he did early last year. 3 games....zero hits....strikeouts/weak contact. He needs to be more selective and have confidence in his native bat to ball ability without over swinging or committing early.

Nice to be in the win column.
I missed most of the game. By time I got to it, Chris Mazza was pitching for the Rays so I knew the Sox were in good shape.
From what I saw in the batter-by-batter updates, it looked like Pivetta was threading the needle successfully weaving in and out of trouble, enough to eek out 5 scoreless innings and get the win.
If he could get his command together they could really have something in Pivetta. Takes him a lot of pitches to record outs, though. If they can tighten that up....
Andriese's numbers in the box score won't look so good but I think he was effective tonight.
Darwinzon Hernandez? Well, he put on display the thing that scares the hell out of me about this bullpen - their inability to throw strikes. I honestly don't think Hernandez will ever throw enough strikes consistently enough to be a guy who can close. Honestly I don't trust him even in high leverage. I know he's hard as hell to hit, but the walks are killers.
Nice to see the offense going. JDM is looking like his old self, which is good, but does make me a little sad - as a fan, because I figure the better he does, the more likely he's gone come July if the team isn't in serious contention. JDM, with the obvious exception of 2020, is one helluva hitter and somebody I enjoy as a fan to watch him hit, so I don't want to see him go, but do anticipate that will happen at some point. After all, if you want Devers in the lineup, that's probably where he'll end up.
I'm starting to think that next year or even this year if the Sox fall out of things and trade JDM, you could see Devers becoming the DH with Dalbec remaining at 1b, and it's possible you could see X shifting back to 3b with Arauz coming up to play SS. Maybe we even see Downs at 2b.

Team OBP is 29th of 30 ... rising above 20th might make this team watchable Wed & Thu face LHP. ERod goes on Thur ? Off day on Friday in Baltimore Team OBP raised from .214 to .285 Now ranked 23rd of 30

Thought that was low-key a really impressive game for Franchy. He went the opposite way for a couple hits, and the announcers were talking about it as a sign of his ability to listen to coaching and adapt, which is promising. That approach will serve him well in Fenway too. And notwithstanding the time he flopped on the ground for no reason, I thought he looked good on defense, making a nice catch and handling the Monster.
I continue to be baffled by everyone wanting to give up on Devers at 3B. The lad is more than a year younger than Michael Chavis and Bobby Dalbec; why are we assuming he's beyond hope for improvement? What's more, he's amply demonstrated he has the *talent* to field the position; it's just some combination of mental and mechanical issues that prevent him being consistent. He will be so valuable if he can stay there and field the position as well as he's shown he has the potential to do.

I’m not down on Darwinzon at all, I just don’t think that’s a situation he should be brought into. He’s a clean inning/available base kind of guy Maybe they can revisit it once he gets into the swing of things but yeah, I’m not so big on bringing him in when it’s cold and he’s not in a rhythm. I feel like that’s just walks waiting to happen We may see Tyler Olson soon

Cordero is going to put a lot of dents in the wall. He can get to pitches on the outside part of the strikezone. Very controlled swing. That might have pitchers feeling him out middle in. But he's got the strength to make that difficult also. Should be interesting.

Needed to get on track versus a guy like Wacha with Glasnow up next and they did just that. Wacha was just grooving slop over the strike zone.
The approach was much better tonight too. I think at least half of our hits were to the opposite field.

It was hilarious watching the lightbulb go on for him when he was standing on 2nd, started slashing everything once he realized how easy it was for him to get wall lol I too found this hilarious

Devers hit the ball hard there at least EV and xBA this season, in order:
81.9, .030 79.6, .070 BB
--- K
62.1, .230 88.0, .000 92.7, .160 --- --- K 104.7, .310 K 94.3, .070 99.9, .660
And then the great defensive play.
Likelier than not he'll be fine.

Pivetta may actually be one of those “they saw something” guys with all his slider use. Still, he needs to sharpen up his fastball control to nake the last step. Impressive though. I was convinced of that from the beginning. Not sure if I noticed this, though:
Career before this year, percentage use and results (R/100 pitches)
FB 59%, -0.72
CU 23%, -0.04
SL 15%, 0.55 WTF?
CH 3%, -1.83
Tonight:
FB 46% CU 13% SL 41% CH 0%

I feel like that’s just walks waiting to happen We may see Tyler Olson soon Darwinzon has great stuff, but he has never been able to control it at any level AA, AAA, MLB. As it has been stated he is a clean inning guy. The ONLY explanation for bringing him in with the bases loaded was for Cora to give him that experience with a 7 run lead. Now that Cora has done it I hope we do not see him do it for a very long time (or until the RS have another 7 run lead).
