Mount castle might be the worst defensive OF I’ve seen in a while, marwin has to get up there instead of just laying there He happened to be at the plate when my brother, a casual fan who loves the game, walked into the room. I told him, "he doesn't appear to understand the concept that when the ball is hit in your direction, you're supposed to run towards it and attempt to catch it."

chef's kiss on that changeup So, imagine a local screenwriter has a treatment for a a human-interest baseball story and has been sent in my direction to get some input on the accuracy (which is actually not that far-fetched). And I find a bit where our rookie hero, who has overcome a series of misfortunes including surgery, somehow ends up jumping directly to the big leagues despite a big lack of experience ... he asks me, is that credible? I tell him, the way you have it happen makes no sense ... and then I explain the Rule 5 draft to him. He's thrilled.
In the next bit, a veteran teaches him a new pitch in his first spring training and he masters it to the degree that big league hitters are just baffled by it. Immediately!
I would tell him, No. That simply doesn't happen. It's not even dramatic! Bad storytelling. He has to flash it being a great pitch, but struggle to throw it consistently. I mean, the Red Sox have a guy named Matt Barnes who has this ridiculous curveball and he still can't throw it consistently after however many years!

Really good day for the Sox. They are above .500 for the first time since Opening Day 2020.
E-Rod was back and looked pretty good as as 7/0 K/BB ratio would tell you.
Garrett Whitlock continues to look great. I guess he'll get the first call in a close game in the middle innings. I wish they would start him, but the bullpen will need his help.
Devers, JDM, and Vazquez continue to hit.
Nice rebound to an 0-3 start.

Blue Jays lost in extras, so unless the Yankees beat the Rays twice today and tomorrow and earn a share of first place, whoever wins Saturday's game will have sole possession.

I bet he gets a few starts late and then serious consideration for a true rotation spot next year.

Man the first three games sucked but the rest of week 1 I saw loads of potential going forward. I think a WC is still a stretch but we should be greatly improved on the mound with reasons to be optimistic about the young arms.

Those who can't... Teach. Coming from a family of educators from higher ed on down, this has always been such an insulting little saying.

Even if you think he'd be one of their best five starters, they don't need him to start - they have 6 guys who can competently (*Richards pending) start, and then Whitlock can be brought in for the higher-leverage middle inning roles. That would've been a contradiction in terms in past years, but the way the game is evolving it's an important role now. Plus it helps them manage his innings, as manfred says.
It reminds me of what Bloom said about pitcher usage on the podcast: not every guy fits squarely into either the 6-inning starter or 1-inning reliever role. Maybe Whitlock will eventually fit into the traditional starter role, but for now this seems perfect.

I was just saying the same thing yesterday, super important role for Whitlock. Having someone who can come into a close game in the middle innings and putting up zeroes for 2 or 3 innings is invaluable. With Whitlock coming off of TJ and really not pitching for 2 years it is a great role for him to get 100-130 innings and prepare himself to start again next year.

Believe it or not I actually agree with you. Like Manfred said, I don't think the Red Sox want to take a guy who hasn't pitched much the last couple of years and stick them in the rotation looking for 6 innings/start. They have to take care of him physically, so I get it. I just think he is better than some of what they already have in the rotation, but yes, they could use him in high leverage situations this season and they can use him to cover the 6th/7th innings as there probably will be a lot of shorter starts this season given that starters' innings are being closely monitored this season. I do think his future, probably next year, lies in the rotation, though. I think he's a starter waiting to happen. We have had a number of guys where we're debating whether they are good enough to eventually stick as starters. We're hopeful on Houck, still have no idea re: Mata, etc, but with Whitlock, I have a good degree of certainty that this guy is going to be a starter. I can see him being a solid #3 starter down the road.

If the Red Sox wanted to add a player to the 40-man is Mata’s injury bad enough for him to be put on the 60-day DL?
....like a position player not currently on the 40-man and then bring him up to the 26-man roster.....like Duran or Hermann

I suspect that it might be, but they were probably pretty sure Schreiber would clear waivers (and were correct), so there hasn't been a need to create extra room yet.
