They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). Per Roster Resource, looks like it'd be Anthony Kay tomorrow.
They're kind of dinged up. Springer is on the IL with a quad injury and Teoscar Hernandez is on the COVID IL. Cavan Biggio has missed their last 3 games too. Pitching-wise, Nate Pearson (stunning I know) and Ross Stripling are on IL from the rotation, and probably their two best relievers (with Yates gone for TJ), Julian Merryweather and Jordan Romano, are also on IL. Meanwhile, Tanner Roark has already been banished to the bullpen. Plus David Phelps hasn't pitched in a week after taking a line drive to the back.
They even have old friend Joel Payamps on the roster.
That said, Ryu has been terrific and Vladito is out of his mind (.389/.507/.667).

He'll pick up where his Dad left off.

He may even eclipse the old man. His father could hit anything that wasn't underground or ten feet over his head so he swung at all of it. He made a lot of solid contact without a great walk rate. Junior is much more discerning, which may make him even more dangerous.
I've watched a few of their games and, sure enough, pitching is where they are lacking. But Ryu is as good as he's ever been, just as Hatfield says. He sets batters up and knocks them down over and over again.

His dad set a high bar to clear, but yeah, it is possible Jr could clear that bar, which is a scary thought. Now let's have the Sox draft D'Angelo Ortiz and see what he can do.

Having been injured so much in his career, Ryu has sort of flown under the radar (or under my radar at least), but his career ERA of 2.93 is the third-lowest of all active starters in the major leagues with 250+ IP. He's only behind Kershaw and deGrom. That's kind of nuts.
ADD: He has a 2.28 ERA since the start of the 2018 season. The guy is Secret Pedro!

Yeah Ryu has been sneaky good since 2018, although he did finish 2nd in the Cy voting in 2019 and 3rd last year.

Per Chris's tweets, Sox starting an all-RHB lineup against Ryu. Ryu actually has a reverse split in his career, but that's a big reverse split through 2018 and a sizeable normal one since, including huge splits this year.

Just found myself getting preemptively angry at Cora for not using Devers to pinch-hit for Renfroe or Plawecki against a righty late in the game because he wants to give Devers a true day off, but I guess that's a little premature.

RED SOX LINEUP:
1. CF Kiké Hernández
2. 2B Christian Arroyo
3. LF J.D. Martinez
4. SS Xander Bogaerts
5. C Christian Vázquez
6. 3B Marwin Gonzalez
7. RF Hunter Renfroe
8. 1B Bobby Dalbec
9. DH Kevin Plawecki
Personally, I'd rather have Devers batting and JD DHing, but I guess he needs a day off

I was gonna day something about going all righty against Ryu being weird because there’s actually a slight reverse platoon split against him for his career but I looked into the last 3 years and he’s been wiping out lefties
So nvm Alex Cora I always trust you

Dalbec, Franchy and Renfroe? That's asking for it. JD might not bite on as many of those. Another issue with the short bench and a club full of guys who swing 1st and think of looking for that good pitch 2nd. Kiké is in that club also. Dito Marwin.

ERod looks really good. I am so happy to see him (apparently) 100%. Great story, great pitcher.

I like Plawecki but giving him the DH is kind of pushing it.

Why would a high cutter up and in to Bichette seem like a good pitch? And that's exactly where Vaz set up, so they actually wanted to throw it there...

I like Plawecki but giving him the DH is kind of pushing it. Maybe it's been said already but do the sox not have a catcher on the bench just in case today? I guess we're seeing the downside of a 3 man bench.

Dalbec is rewarding patience. A really strong few days against really good pitchers. yep, and i thought it was gonna be a tough at bat for him when the first pitch was 4 inches outside and got called a strike. on that note, i flipped between a bunch of games yesterday and i swear so many outside balls were being called strikes in each game. tons of hitters complaining too; idk what's going on but umps look like they have a huge strike zone to start the year. as if pitchers need more help in these times.

Yes, getting mad about future events is premature. I hope I can get mad that Cora had Dalbec pitch an inning when the Red Sox are ahead of the Yankees 20-0. Lol

I don't know that I've seen Eduardo be as aggressive in the strike zone as he's been through these first three starts. A welcome development, he's attacking and not creating his own jams anymore.
