Celtics 2021 Offseason

It's Boston, they have like 4-5 good months of weather a year, you need to be winning for players to want to come here. This isn’t Baseball where the season plays out in the best months of the year. The players are here for the worst months, I myself wonder why I stay in Massachusetts. LOL that's funny and also a good point. I don't think they are at risk of being BAD, my point was that they can have some sort of lenience with the new coach, he/she doesn't need to do what Doc is doing with the 6ers, but rather gradually build a team and get them to play on a system. In 19-20 the C's were top 5 in both offense and defense, they tanked in both aspects this seasons. The deficit on defense is understandable considering the injuries, but the offense did NOT pass the eye test. Kidd's offense with the Bucks was LMAOtastic, that should rule him out IMO.

They're not rebuilding, they're BUILDING. Tatum is 23, Brown is 24. Win now is probably 2-3 years away. Just to clarify here so there's no confusing what I'm saying, I think every move they make should be one to improve the team. They flat out need more talent and they need to figure out what the heck they will do with Kemba. However, there shouldn't be any pressure to win the next season considering how young the core is. That's why they should value any coach that can bring in a system they want to put in place, not someone who can get them to overachieve or shout at them really hard. They need an identity. Sure, ideally a proven coach is always preferential, but those are harder to come by and I'd rather take a shot at someone with no experience like Hammon and even Billups than someone with meh experience like Kidd and Pierce as long as they come in with a long term plan. If your building then you're trying to win! You don't bring in better players if players don't see you winning. I truly believe us winning and getting back to a team on the rise next year is crazy important. It's Boston, they have like 4-5 good months of weather a year, you need to be winning for players to want to come here. This isn’t Baseball where the season plays out in the best months of the year. The players are here for the worst months, I myself wonder why I stay in Massachusetts. I could talk myself into Billups he checks so many boxes. I can't get on board with Hammon, that would be a media circus. How I interpret "win now" is maximizing wins in the next year or two by trading future wins for present wins--think trading picks and younger players for aging veterans on the downslope of their careers. Call it the Dombrowski approach. That seems like a bad approach for this current team and roster. I cannot conceivably think of trades/signings that would make them a legitimate title contender next year, and they should not enter into the offseason with a "title or bust" mentality.
They should instead focus on continuing to develop Tatum, Brown and their other young players. Now, that may require a veteran presence or two to help build the right culture and eliminate the black holes on the roster, but they don't need to bring in guys that would push Timelord and Langford and Nesmith out of playing time just to eke out an extra win or two next year. They're not contending unless at least a few of those guys turn into legitimate rotation players, and now's the time to find out whether they have it in them.
The "media circus" bit is almost a cliche at this point. I hope that's not part of their decision-making process. I might be the last David Fizdale fan on earth, but he's a guy I've always liked.

I just saw the big news, and although the specific details are surprising (Ainge stepping down, Stevens moving up), the outcome is not. It has been clear this team hasn't been paying attention to Stevens for a long time. So... what's next??? Changes had to happen...glad of that. It will be critically important to get Jason and Jaylen to buy in to the new coach and listen and put forth max effort...that will define their leadership and respect. Agree with all of this.

In the NBA you basically are trying to win or rebuilding. You have two all-stars, so you aren't rebuilding. I have no problem saying we're not in all in mode, yet I don't see how we aren't in win now mode. Are you making moves that help you next year or moves for the future? I'm making moves to help us next year. I think we're at the point where our draft picks best use could be a trade, not just adding another young player. My target is Lonzo Ball. Ready to help you next year, yet not even close to his prime yet either. Add a bunch more veterans to balance a roster that was too young and lacked experience. Yet keep Robert Williams, Langford, Nesmith, Pritchard and likely even Grant Williams. Given the Boston Media you have to take that into account. The whole off-season right up to the first game would be 100% about the first female coach. The playoffs would be about her, if you want the finals, same exact thing. Nevermind if things start to go bad, how nasty the media gets in Boston. If I was an agent for a female coach, I'd try to stay away from New York, Boston and LA for her first job. The pressure and media will be crazy no matter what, I don't think you want to make it worse.

I remember when Farrell was fired, I believe it was user fenwaythehardway who advocated hiring a latin manager a bit like RJP said we should hire a black coach. I don't believe at the time I managed to get my point across adequately, but the gist is that we shouldn't hire A latin coach, A black coach, A woman. We need to hire the right person for the job, which was the case with Cora. Now if that happens to be a woman or a black man so we can get the added benefits of being on the vanguard of cultural shift, hey that's even better. But first things first, it needs to be the right person for the job and if it is, the media will not be an issue. They will crucify a coach who isn't ready to lead Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, but that would literally be the case for any human being. I could be dead wrong here, but I believe Hammon is ready to get a shot. At least interviewing her is basically obligatory. And it would be a cool story. But it will only be a cool story if she is indeed what I believe she is.

Kara Lawson would be a great hire, if she will leave Duke. Everyone raves about how great she is as a coach. I don’t care much about experience. That’s only worth something, if you learn from it and chance. I also think it behooves the franchise to hire an African American coach. I’d never hire someone solely on their race, but there’s a surplus of African American coaching talent available.

Lots on here I agree with and some I don't.
Bottom line for next year is based on the health of Kemba and R Williams along with the progression of Nesmith and Romeo. Maybe they can rework the roster but as many have posted, including me, that isn't going to be easy at all. The C's are stuck with Kemba and have few options for now so all we can do is hope the long off season helps. He says his knee feels good and the latest injury is unrelated, we shall see.
I think Smart is a goner, which I have always been against and maybe I'm wrong but he is the only guy they can get some value back with in a trade.
All this back and forth on building or rebuilding is just semantics, of course they are building and will be a good team. But barring some great luck with health or player development they aren't unseating the Nets, Sixers or Bucks next year. The C's peak is still a couple years away when Tatum and Brown are at their peaks and the roster has matured. They are just not in a position right now with the lack of assets to go out and rework this roster into a true contender. We have all been hopeful for a while now that it was possible to do based on all the assets Danny had that he could get the right pieces but it hasn't worked out. All the moves he made, Hayward, Kemba, Kyrie, just haven't worked so now we just have to be patient with what they have. Does anybody really think their is a GM out there stupid enough to bail them out with Kembas max deal? All we can do is hope Kemba can come back healthy cause we are stuck with him.

Hiring a female coach will be the story line for at minimum the first year and it could last much longer than that. A female coach will attract media attention like no other coach you could hire. I can see that there could be very good long-term benefits for both the Celtics and the NBA. Yet in this day and age you have at acknowledge the media firestorm that hire will bring with it. Look at Danica Patrick in Indy Car and NASCAR. You feel she's the best option go for it. Yet you're kidding yourself if you don't think that will be the story next year and attract a ton of extra press. I also think you have the wrong female coach. Why would Brad every look at Hammon over Lawson who actually coached on the Celtics? With Lawson you can talk with the players and get opinions.

I just need to go on record as saying we are closer to being a contender than a bunch of people think. Yeah you might not be one of the truly elite teams next year. Yet the gap isn't what you watched in the playoffs either because you didn't have Brown. Nevermind Walker and Robert Williams for a bunch of games. The hard part is finding a pg, yet you can do it. Fixing the depth issues can easily happen. Yet the biggest improvement will come from better effort and playing like a team. This year was the perfect storm and the roster had too many young guys to weather it. Give Robert Williams, Nesmith, Langford and Pritchard a full off-season, that alone will be a huge improvement because I do believe in those guys.

Eastern Conference Finalist, with a legit chance to make the finals, is not a bad place to be (and I disagree with all the media types saying the last 5 years are failures because we didn't get a 'ship). I think it's feasible to make this team that. All other teams in the leagues are changing so fast, a window can open up. But it's hard, and most likely requires JB and JT to grow even more and most of those bolded guys to reach ceilings. Plus some real luck on Kemba/Fournier or their replacements. I do really think this team missed having normal practice schedules; I imagine that hurt teams more that were young/growing and had so many moving parts with injuries.

What are we talking about with ceilings? Like most likely outcomes or a players top ceiling? We've been spoiled recently watching Tatum, Brown, Rozier and for me even Robert Williams already having blown past their original likely outcomes. If they reach what I see as there peak ceilings, watchout NBA. We'll be in great shape even if that group reaches the 50-75% range. Yet that's why I asked about the ceilings, because people's opinions greatly differ. I was a massive Rozier fan and I certainly didn't expect he be just about at a 55% effective FG percentage right now. Lots of players have massive ceilings, few ever reach them. I just hope our owner is willing to spend. If he gets afraid of the luxury tax given this seasons results, it could take more time. Suck it up, pay the bill and you won't be sorry in a few years. Example I want Fournier back if his salary is reasonable or trade him for another good piece. Spend the tax paying mid-level. Don't be afraid of adding people. Don't just trade Thompson to lesson the luxury tax if you can't get a good replacement.

That teams basically rebuilding even if they don't want to admit it.

I can't believe Steven A Smith has a job. I can't wrap my head around white privilege and diversity issues given the makeup of the NBA. Slamming Steve Nash and Steven's moves. He's once again gone too far. Heck he's now calling out player like LeBron James. It's either best people for the jobs or it's something completely different. I'll stop there before I get myself in trouble.

It might just be a night where the starters or resting or they fed a little more because they were hot, but you see the 20 point game, or the stretch where he runs 15-6-6, or the game he shut down Jimmy Butler. For Nesmith, he had a stretch at the end of the year where he was getting 15 pts 6 rebounds and playing notably harder on defense than those around him (in 22 min). That's what I tend to think of as a ceiling, really a 75% outcome. For Williams I think he showed his most likely outcome (20 to 25 min or long stretches out, but effective when in), but his 75% is probably a 30 min starter where he puts up 15 to 20 often, cleans the glass and affects tons of shots near the basket. His true ceiling is a Top-10 center.

Brad has proven beyond any doubt he understands the game like few others and it's not like he's going to jump in blind, he'll be part of Danny's team. There's a chance it won't work, but it's a good and even safe bet. Brad doesn't need to prove anything to anyone.

Nesmith.... can he take that second year jump. Outside those two. The rest besides your 2 young all stars are all eh ok but eh. Prime trade player #1—- Marcus smart if value is right.

This off-season will be the first healthy one for Langford since he graduated high school and he’s still the youngest guy on the team. It’s a key year. If he comes back with a corner 3, then he’s a whole different guy. This run in the playoffs, despite the ass kicking, may be the confidence boost he needed as well.

Yeah I still believe in Romeo, he's insanely young - guys like Joe Harris were still playing college ball at his age and his NBA level wing defense is really good considering his lack of playing time.

Lillard is being a little cryptic online that’s why I ask. So let’s just hypothetically say he wants out of Portland- I think Brown is probably the best player they could reasonably expect to get in a trade package

His true ceiling is a Top-10 center. I certainly agree with that , yet I'd add how guys improve is also big. Rozier never did anything his rookie year, yet he got better each year and hasn't yet stopped. Robert Williams likely projection right now top 15 center. I see his ceiling as top 5 center and defensive player of the year type guy. His rapid improvement is huge for me. I seem to be the only one that looks at his health as a big step forward this year Langford likely upside is low level starter known more for his D. I see his true ceiling as crazy high if his jumper comes around. Yet just his D and driving ability will be enough for a long career. Nesmith likely upside is good starter. His true ceiling is better Joe Harris. His rapid improvement stands out. Went from maybe worst looking rookie in a long time to looking like the player you thought you were getting at 14. Pritchard is hard, senior players always are and he's not a great athlete. Likely ceiling low level starter or scorer off the bench. True upside a slightly less Van Fleet player. His D was surprisingly good given his scouting reports. Yet he needs to be a PG, if he's just a SG his value tanks given his size and athletic ability. I've certainly asked myself if I'm under selling him and if he could be your future PG. He certainly showed his upside, yet our coach constantly playing him at SG over PG scares me. I might be selling him short, he did so many good things and he played so many minutes that he hit a rookie wall others didn't. He just impressed me more to start the year, than at the finish. At the start he was getting in the paint more, towards the end it was more just launching three's. It's an impressive group, when you basically looking for Role players to surround your two stars.

You could make the white privilege argument for Steve Nash, but certainly NOT for Stevens. Brad has proven beyond any doubt he understands the game like few others and it's not like he's going to jump in blind, he'll be part of Danny's team. There's a chance it won't work, but it's a good and even safe bet. Brad doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. I have a hard time saying Nash is white privilege versus he's a HOF player and two time MVP that was a PG. It's not like you hired Scal or Perkins. Now KG is on record saying he doesn't want to coach, yet if you hired him without any experience is anyone saying anything? I don't know about you, yet his coaching impressed me. The way he adjusted that roster to fit those three players.
