After Groome very nearly put it together for a great start last time, I'm very interested in what he does today.

The much maligned Sox system is now 47-37 collectively and after a bad start.

Possibility of 4 rain outs tonight. Pretty much guaranteed not to be a full slate of games.

Groome off to another good start: Three shutout innings, one hit, three Ks, no walks. He's lost it in the fourth his last two times out, so this will be a good test.

Man, German has been atrocious this year. The crazy thing is he has 10 unearned runs to go on top of his 16 earned runs and 8.47 ERA.

Man, German has been atrocious this year. Welp, at least they're getting their money's worth out of Ottavino.

He really hasn't pitched much and might need to build up arm strength. That's the hope! There have always been very legitimate reasons for his struggles but there also comes a point where he needs to have some successes. Tonight was a good step. Looked like his control was getting wobbly in the fifth with the HBP and wild pitch, but he kept his poise well and allowed just the one run. The efficiency is what I'm happiest about tonight, needed only the 63 pitches to get through five, 41 strikes. Good start by any measure.

3-2 count, bases loaded, the pitcher starts his motion, half the lights in Salem shut off, Northcut steps out and tries to call timeout, the ump didn't give him timeout, the pitch was a ball, the umps meet, they grant him the walk that forces in a run, and now the game is in a delay

Northcut 3/3 2B, 2 BB’s
Big Joe 3/4 2 2B
Good day for a couple guys in the middle of Salem’s order. I’d imagine Big Joe gets moved up whenever Reed gets moved up

Run scored in the 5th on a HBP, SB, WP, SF.
7 GB, 1 PU, 2 FB, 2 LD (1 for a 2B, the only hit), which is really impressive. Looks great in the video, too, apparently sharp enough to awaken the announcer from a coma. Partially.

German's total ERA of 8.47 broken down by inning:
1st: 1.93 2nd: 0.00 3rd: 9.00 4th: 18.00 5th: 33.75
When I saw him he was consistently hitting 96 in the first and touching 97, but by the fourth he was sitting 94 and getting shelled. His fastball is very hittable in the lower range. I don't think anyone is bullish on him sticking as a starter right now, but I am interested to see how he performs if he can sit 96-97 and touch 98 out of the bullpen. It doesn't make any sense to move him there now, but that's where his best chance is to succeed.

With German he's been giving up a lot of hard contact it'd seem (lots of XBH), so it's not just the Portland defense, but the Portland defense isn't helping him at all.

It does seem that the consensus was that he’d probably end up in the pen and it certainly seems that way. Thanks for the numbers/information! Truly interesting

In light of the 40 man discussion, German being fast tracked as a reliever might make sense soon.
The lost development year is going to have roster ripples for a while.

His motion is odd... he does this little off-balance jig after he lands. But he is massive.... I am still really hopeful he works out.
