They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). Kiké is at 0.9 fWAR/1.2 bWAR, so on pace for a 2+ WAR season - better than you'd think!
He's also at -0.83 WPA, tied with Marwin for worst on the team and 13th worst in the majors among qualified batters - exactly what you'd think!

The Rays, distilled: “There’s two ways to win: There’s run prevention and run creation…It’s harder in baseball to create runs than it is to prevent runs. Ironically, it’s also cheaper to prevent runs than it is to create runs. The Rays excel at prevention. The hitters clear the fences enough to capture leads. Their fielders stand in the right place and display athleticism. Their pitchers enter games in disruptive patterns and miss bats. It can be fun to watch. It is more difficult to solve.” “We catch the ball,” pitching coach Kyle Snyder says. “We throw it over the plate. We make you beat us.” It’s basically The Patriot Way transposed to baseball. I hope they keep Wong in AAA. He's looking like he'll be on the 40 man bubble after the season. The decision only gets harder if he spends time sitting on a big league bench instead of playing every day. There's plenty of slack on the current 40 man to add Hermann.

The decision only gets harder if he spends time sitting on a big league bench instead of playing every day. There's plenty of slack on the current 40 man to add Hermann. Why would he be on the bubble? Bloom got him specifically because he liked him as a potential catcher for Boston whether it was as a potential starting catcher or more likely a backup catcher, one with pop who can do more than just catch. I don't think Bloom is going to give up on him so easily just because he's off to a bad start. Even if he has a down season I think they'll put him on the 40.

I get why they went with him- it preserves depth- but it’s nice to see they are still comfortable enough to do that with Wong even with his SSS struggles post-injury
He’s doing a good job controlling the running game

Just my impression... 90% of the comments on Twitter are useless snark.

So Santana's still with the team and Franchy still in AAA, I'm assuming.

Assorted Wong thoughts
a) Keep in mind he was out for 3 weeks from 5/11 to 6/2 with the hamstring issue. He's played 11 games since returning and yeah, you'd hope he'd have shaken more of the rust off by now, but it's not like he's an infielder who's played every day. He'd only played in 5 starts before he got hurt, so he hasn't had a terribly good chance to get on track this year.
b) His bugaboo has been strikeouts, and that's been a big issue since he returned. Since returning, he has a 32.6% k rate. Needs to cut that down.
c) While he was out, he spent time on the MLB taxi squad immediately preceding his activation. Wouldn't surprise me if they had Varitek work with him a bit and evaluate him in case they were in this precise situation (in addition to getting him exposure to how things work with the MLB club).

Cora continues with the automatic out leading off. Great stratedy. I think Duran is ready. As soon as Houck gets going I like to see him also.
By the way I think Cora is awesome but this leadoff issue I dont understand. Merloni is talking about it too.

Wong isn't ready to be a full time backup piece. He's extremely active behind the plate to take advantage of his athleticism but, that will hurt the umpire pitch calling. Wong is the perfect example of a catcher that will benefit from robo umps.

Yup, in retrospect I wish the Sox had chosen Hill over Richards or Perez. Of course I didn't complain because I figured the chances of Hill staying healthy were slim to none, even worse than the chance of a younger Garrett Richards. Somehow they've both almost made it to the halfway point still intact, although Hill is pitching a helluva lot better and would have cost a lot less and would probably have preferred to pitch for the Red Sox. I have a feeling the Sox will bring Hill back for a 3rd trip, but I have a feeling by then he'll either be injured, ineffective, or both.

It's worth noting that Franchy picked the wrong time to give up destroying AAA pitching -- .231 / .444 /.308 in his last 5 games. He didn't even start on Sunday.
Meanwhile, that Wong is not strictly a catcher means that they are not two injuries away from having a pitcher play the OF, as they would be with a standard backup. However, that they are going into this series with 9 relievers and a 2-man bench -- one of whom will only play in an emergency -- still strikes me as odd.

To this point in the season, I haven’t paid one bit of attention to the standings. Like I could have barely told you when the Sox were in first place or not and I didn’t look much at who else in the division won or lost on a particular day. I’m going to start my own pennant race watch beginning with this series.
It’s officially summer now. The Sox are in first place and are lined up to play the two teams just below them in the standings. All is right with the world. I’m ready for dominance. I got pennant fevah!
