Granberg with his second home run in Portland. 3-4 tonight and continuing to have a nice season at the plate. He's a single shy of the cycle tonight. He also stole home, probably on a double steal. He's not a prospect, though. He committed the sin of finishing college so he's always too old for his level.

Franchy gets the start at 1B for the 2nd day in a row. 1-9 with 7 Ks and 1BB in the last 2 games. Mega SSS, but I hope the transition to first didn't set him back at the plate. Lol one of those games wasn't even at first. Actually, the K's have kind of come back for a decent bit now, as someone on Twitter pointed out to me: First 19 games in Worcester: .389/.494/.736, 19.5% K rate Last 14: .333/.390/.463, 44.1% K rate Granted, it's not clear how much of that noise. In that stretch his K's have gone: 3,0,4,3,1,0,1,2,2,1,1,1,4,3. So there was that bad 4-game stretch, a fine enough 8-game stretch, then his last 2. Not sure we can make a lot of it yet.

He's not a prospect, though. He committed the sin of finishing college so he's always too old for his level. I get the sarcasm, but it's not just an age thing. I'd point out first that he was the last guy left off this month's rankings update. He's on the cusp and honestly if you had him in the 41-50 range I wouldn't debate the point. He's interesting. He isn't necessarily 1B-only - as Ian put it, he can fake it well enough in left or right field. But it's also not like he plays up the middle or profiles as a guy who can play every day in an outfield corner necessarily. It's more a 1B/COF bench profile if things break perfectly. That's not an easy profile to succeed with. You've really gotta hit. In 2019 in Low-A, at age 23, he was "merely" good, and he struggled in a short call-up to High-A. He hit just 8 home runs on the season. After the year off, he started this season back in High-A - I'd liked to have seen him start the year in Portland, to be honest. He raked, as he probably should have, which is very good, and he got out of the level quickly! Now in Portland, his numbers are interesting, but they're a bit wonky. Like in 14 games he hasn't taken a walk yet. His .385 BABIP is high and is above anything he's done previously. Could be SSS noise but I'm not seeing anything that makes me think I need to completely reevaluate him. Like I said, he's interesting, and he's definitely got a profile where he'll need to hit all the way up.

Kind of surprised at that. This is easily the most interesting complex league team in years due to the fact that the Spinners no longer exist. 3 top-20 prospects and 5 more guys in the 41-60 range. Former ranked prospects in Flores and D. Diaz. Some guys lurking just outside the rankings in Loubier, maybe Encarnacion. Granted, it wasn't the A lineup today, but still, just surprised you'd think like that.

This is bouncing off the example, but not just re: Franchy. Are those sorts of variations a result of the wider range of competition? I mean, there are guys in AAA who are on the cusp of being good big leaguers, and there are guys who are… not. So I always wonder when we see clusters (some of Duran’s stats might be an example iirc) — is it possibly (not always but possibly) feasting on lesser guys?

I'm going to assume the FCL is in a rain delay? Chris, Is it just me or have there been more rainouts than usual this year. I figured you would be the person to ask...

Like I said, he's interesting, and he's definitely got a profile where he'll need to hit all the way up. That's a reasonable explanation. Thanks. But I think sometimes too much emphasis is placed on a player's perceived weaknesses and not enough on what he is good at. A classic case of this is Wade Boggs. Some in the Sox organization dissed him as too slow, a lousy fielder and just a singles hitter, overlooking the fact that he was an on-base machine. So he wound up playing 2 full seasons at Pawtucket after 2 full seasons at AA.
I'm not trying to compare Granberg with anyone, just suggesting that maybe some more focus should be placed on his hitting. In regards to his walk rate, his P/PA has taken a dive right after both of his in-season promotions. I would bet that he has been overanxious to impress and that the walk rate reverts to the ~10% rate it has been pretty consistently at other levels. His K% has been very respectable and has declined at every level until the SSS at Portland.

One quick note on Granberg: in the pic on his profile, he looks like a lean athlete, while in his pic on yesterday’s Cup of Coffee he looks like portly softball player. Not necessarily fat but pretty substantial around the middle. Obviously the first picture is older, but has he put on a lot of weight?

I would say he's currently a substantial guy top-to-bottom but his physique can easily look paunchier than it is when he's running in a baseball jersey. I am behind on photos (this will surprise no one) but here's a few since his promotion.
