Can Schwarber play 1st? Otherwise, you put him in LF, Verdugo in CF, Renfroe in RF and Kiké goes to 2B full-time. Duran stays as the 4th OF and to pinch run or they send him back to WooSox for playing time. Confused by this deal..Makes you wonder if Duran or Verdugo is on the move in another deal

Kyle Scharber is athletic enough to move from cacher to the outfield. Has only played one game at 1st. Likely he can lean to play first quickly, hammy permitting.

How does this work:
Kyle Schwarber lf 1 year/$10M (2021), plu2 2022 option
1 year/$10M (2021), plus 2022 mutual option signed by Washington as a free agent 1/9/21 21:$7M, 22:$11.5M mutual option ($3M buyout)
Does this mean Schwarber has a $11.5 million player option, but if he accepts it then the Red Sox can force him to free agency by paying him $3 million?

The spreadsheets have Schwarber at like .240/.340/.520 going forward. He is a monster hitter.

Kyle for Aldo Ramirez STEAL. He can play 1st btw. He has never played 1b. It's not that hard.

So to put things in perspective:
Kyle Schwarber: 1.8 fWAR, 138 wRC+ Anthony Rizzo: 1.0 fWAR, 115 wRC+
Return for Rizzo from the Yankees: Alcantara (50 FV), Vizcaino (45 FV) Return for Schwarber from Red Sox: Ramirez (40+ FV)
Schwarber has a mutual option for next season too.

I think of it as he has a $3M bonus and then an $8.5M mutual option.

I don't exactly know where our dude is going to play, but the Red Sox got the better player at like, one fourth the cost lol.

Ok, ngl, that made me lol. Can't argue with the bat though. 25 bombs from the left side, we all said they needed more pop from the left side, we just assumed it'd be at 1B. If he can play 1st this is a great deal, even having to give up Aldo. It definitely shuffles the lineup a bit, curious to see how it all falls out here.

Never bad to add a great hitter. A couple Observations. 1- does this put Sox currently over lux tax? 2- does it mean another move? 3- more options/ insurance / platooning?? 4- should slide right into LF at least vs all RH.

Unless the Nats are picking up money (unlikely given the return IMO), they’re almost definitely going over the luxury tax.

It just struck me ... he'll have a chance to learn 1B while rehabbing from the injury. Ex-catchers pick up the position pretty quickly.
Meanwhile, his being on the IL means you're still looking at Franchy a bit longer, who gets chance to earn a bench sot (or supplant Duran as an OF regular). And the affordable option for next year fits one of the reasons I liked Santana: bridge to Casas.

I'm reading you as saying the Red Sox would pay him $3 million in this scenario and then he is a free agent.

That's too much for Berrios, wouldn't trade Houck straight up for him.

Lineup gets a lot longer. Would love if he’s secretly been taking 1B reps, but most likely he’s out in left. Still, as much as I love Duran he’s been bad so far and it’s hard to bank on him figuring it out this year. So Schwarber takes at bats from him, Chavis, Marwin, Santana. The price seems fair, leaves a little sting.
I still wouldn’t be against them also adding another 1B type to take more directly from Dalbec, but I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary either.

Actually, scratch that—maybe the mutual option spreads out the luxury tax hit and they can sneak under the tax line (especially if they make another move to send salary out)? If he just counts $7.5M for 2021, prorated, that’s a $2.5M hit, which maybe they can recover from.
