I've been subscribed to The Athletic for a year now and there is no other general sports media that is worth paying for in comparison. I'm sure a lot of you are subbed as well. I just wanted to pass along a tidbit for saving on resubscription, since the second payment is automatic at full price (it was $59.99 for me, others may have a different rate), assuming you got a discount to begin with.
I had an expired credit card on my account and I started getting emails about updating it to pay $59.99 a year. Since I'm cheap (thrifty), I decided to let it get cancelled thinking I would immediately get discounted offers to resubscribe if I did. So it finally got cancelled yesterday. Sure enough, I got an email today for 55% off an annual plan which came to $32.39 for a year with $71.99 charged a year from now for the 2nd year. There's $27.60 saved.
I then went to the "Your Account" screen and saw the next billing date a year from now with $71.99. Next to it, you can cancel the following year's subscription. When I did that, it gave me the option to renew a year from now for $21.59!
That's a $78 savings for 2 years. I got two years for $53.98, or less than the original $59.99 resubscription price! More money that can be donated here!
If anyone would like a 30 day guest pass for free, I have 5 to give away. Just let me know.
You may get similar offers if you go to cancel your subscription while it's still active, but I like that I got two full years this way.
