Not a great win, but better than the alternative. And Cora needs to talk to Vazquez about hustling.

I demand a 7-game, no-holds-barred relegation series between the Rangers and the Orioles. And winner shaves losers’ heads for classic good measure.

The win is a relief but Shaw really showed how good an AB he can still put up. All the pitches he swung at were strikes and all the pitches he took were balls. Actually refreshing compared to what we've seen lately.

Actually refreshing compared to what we've seen lately. And he was clearly going to hit a flyball to the outfield, which is apparently something that's virtually impossible to do these days.

Actually his dad should come out of retirement and close, Jeff Shaw, who was a teammate of Alex Cora's.

Watching the replay, Shaw has a long-*** swing, but boy does it look good when he hits it on the nails.

Watching the post game comments, it reminds that Eovaldi was screwed out of a win by Barnes and Barnes August ERA of 15.00+.
Devers saves us, but the Rangers CF got a glove on that 420 foot shot and that miss by inches opens the door. To me, Whitlock is the big hero. He looks like the best candidate to be the closer, but it is a lot to ask of a guy who has been an every fourth day pitcher all year.
As for Shaw, good on him. But he is still a .190 hitter and a filler.

Are you referring to either Cody Kukuk being arrested for robbery while still in the system or Jay Groome's dad being arrested for drug and weapons charges?

SP has been solid in August. We need offense to come through. Today 12 LOB from JD and Xander.

LOL @ Bogaerts thinking that was a walk off and needing to hustle to score. I'm not usually this guy, but c'mon, man, not the time for a premature celebration. Bogaerts does this a LOT - stands and looks at wall-balls he thinks are gonna be homers, fair balls that he thinks are going foul... It's a bit confounding for a major leaguer to do this, and even more confounding to not learn after multiple misjudgements that it's maybe like not a good idea to just stand there after the ball is hit.
Anyway... came back from an 11% win expectancy (which was probably more like 5% when it was an 0-2 count to Devers in the 10th). The magic's back baby! Clutch contribution from Barnes to enable the morale-boosting walk-off!

I think Jeff Reardon, if I remember correctly, was dealing with a lot of depression issues after he lost his son Shane to drugs. I believe Reardon was picked up for shoplifting. Actually I just checked. It was armed robbery of a jewelry store he was picked up for. He was having problems with meds and dealing with depression brought on by his son passing away from a drug overdose. I believer Reardon was suicidal at the time.

Not an inspiring series victory, but you take it. Can’t ask for much more than 5 out of 6 against the Rangers and Orioles, regardless of how bad they looked (specifically the last two against the Rangers). They did what they were reasonably asked of in disposing the garbage of the league. They need to continue beating the bag out of the lowly Twins.
If you do what you’re supposed to and the Yankees are still able to finish ahead, then you just have to tip your cap to them. Hopefully Atlanta can put some hurting on them and get us back in business. Again, not feeling great about the wins, but the job is done all the same.

Good to win the series. Kind of scary that they played even or were outscored by the Rangers. The Sox won the first game easily, the Rangers the second one easily and in the 3rd game the Sox were two outs from victory and then the Rangers were one strike from victory.
Basically they played even baseball at home with a 43-81 team, which is worrisome.
Happy for the win, but concerned that they're still playing very sloppy baseball. The good news is they found a team playing as badly or worse than them. I know that will be the case for awhile, which is good, but they need to play a lot better.
The defense was shoddy. They could have put the game away with one big hit in the 7th, failed, and opened the door for the 9th inning issues, which featured a closer who still doesn't have his act together. If the Sox are going to win, they need Matt Barnes to pitch like he did prior to the All-Star break. They don't have another alternative to take his spot. Whitlock is not going to pitch on back-to-back days. Ottavino is still having his adventures. They need Barnes to figure it out. Until then, perhaps, they use some sort of bullpen by committee to close out games, but I don't know that it'll work.
Good win, but still not playing well. The defense is the big indicator. They really need to tighten it up.

Keep reminding myself I felt this was a 500 team in the spring. Hand full of guys have carried the offense and JDM appears to have hit the wall hard. Overuse caught up with the bullpen particularly Barnes. Just gonna try to enjoy what's left and hope for the best.

Based on what I've seen of the games, a really large percentage of this team's struggles in the clutch since the rough skid started (dating that to the series Tampe swept) come down to JDM and Barnes.
Let's see what the numbers say...
JD's WPA is -0.41. Bad, but not as bad as I might've guessed. Barnes' WPA is -1.13. 'Bout what I expected.
Devers is another big culprit. -0.90 WPA, and an 81 wRC+.
Renfroe: 150 wRC+, -0.25 WPA. He's been great overall but not when it counts. Subjectively, he's one of the guys who strikes me as most guilty of trying to do too much in big situations. Another factor might be teams using righty relievers to face him in those situations.
I would have put Kiké in that category too but he actually has a solid WPA (0.43).
Dalbec with a 170 wRC+ and a -0.14 WPA. How is that even possible?
Duran has not been as bad as I would've guessed - an 80 wRC+ and only slightly negative WPA and clutch numbers (-0.08 and -0.06 respectively). But he has ***ZERO*** walks since July 24th. He's now behind Dalbec in fWAR. Or ahead of him in negative WAR, if you prefer...
I'm kind of sympathetic to the suggestion upthread that it wouldn't be a terrible idea to sell high on Duran. I'm nowhere near giving up on him, but his getting up into the 20s and 30s on the top-100 prospect lists is a little baffling to me. His less than stellar defense and arm keep his ceiling from being too high, and while he certainly hit well in Worcester, if you looked under the hood his numbers were not exactly overwhelming... the home/road splits and K rate were, if not red flags, at least yellow ones.
(The last paragraph is only like 50% an attempt to reverse jinx him into going on a homer tear starting tomorrow.)
