Shouldn't be hard to get a fresh arm up tomorrow while Hernandez and Arroyo are off the 40-man.

I knew that Whitlock, Ottavino, and Richards are down for 2 games and that Sawamura was unlikely to pitch today.
I knew Houck is one of the best twice around the order/5 innings pitched starter.
I wondered how and if Cora could make it work.
I didn't tune into the game until Verdugo saved Houck's no-hitter and 4-0 lead. The first thought I had when I turned is can Houck actually get thru the 6th.
It's amazing how he cannot do it. I don't know if it's young starters coming up not conditioned to turn over the lineup more than twice or whatever, but at some point he will need to figure it out. Given his pen options, I don't blame Cora for giving him a chance in the 6th. He'll never figure it out if he doesn't get the chance.
But he lost it suddenly and then the pen had to get 11 outs.
Taylor giving up the 2 out 2 run single was a killer. Taylor hasn't been very effective since his scoreless streak ended.
Robles wasn't going to get thru the inning without giving up at least a run. And then Davis gets the first 2 outs and you think maybe somehow he gets the ball to Barnes to see if he can save a 9th inning lead, but then.....a 4-0 lead had turned to an aggravating 7-5 loss.
Unfortunately it was predictable.
They're not going to catch Tampa but they're making it harder to get the Wild Card home field advantage. And of course they put even making that game in jeopardy when they give games away, but this loss was on a thinned bullpen.

At some point AC needs to let Houk attempt to work out of his own jam, if for nothing else to just see how he reacts. I’m so sick and tired of this 3rd time through the order crap. He was cruising through the the top of the sixth with a no-no and he gives up a solo shot. Then hit batter. Then a ‘hit batter’ that really wasn’t b/c Zimmer reached out intentionally. Tough spot, granted but with w/ rh Wilson Ramos up that runs at the speed of smell I take my chances with the kid right there —- not b/c I don’t trust JT, but rather why shoot your best bullpen bullet right there. I have ZERO faith on Robles at this point. Either you take the training wheels off Houk (in that spot particularly), or you’re going all-in on the same set of guys you didn’t trust enough to bridge the ninth in games 1 & 2 of the series. All I’m saying is that at some point, this 3rd time through the order crap becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you’re not going to let him try, then just make him a bulk reliever or better yet, trade him to Tampa and let them whisper something into his ear that gets the job done aka Jalen Beeks, J. Springs, Mazda, Wisler, etc, etc.

Every time Houck leaves with runners on, they score. Every time.

Usually when a guy has exactly a .500 OBP and 1.000 SA over a stretch of time, he's 2/4 with 2 doubles.
But it's now clear that he can also be 17/41, 4 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 5 BB, and 2 HB.
this is schwarber? Dalbec starting August 8, after his first 2 PA. I noted the 1.000 SA after the homer.

Went out to do yardwork with the Sox ahead. Came back in later to find out they'd lost it thanks to three runs in the 8th inning. I've got to stop doing that.

I know they wanted innings out of Houck but they need to know better at this point. Should have been thrilled with 15 outs. Cora has been pushing a lot of wrong buttons lately

Cora has been pushing a lot of wrong buttons lately Funny…a post three up from yours says Cora has to trust Houck and leave him in to learn how to pitch longer and you post that Cora was wrong to let him go as long as he did. Either way Cora has to use the mediocre arms that Bloom traded for but no need to include his decisions since he is the brilliant GM.

If you have guys like Whitlock or Richards or Perez in the bullpen, they either need to be able to pitch consecutive days or they need to be able to pitch multiple innings. It puts a huge strain on the rest of the bullpen if they can do neither.
Philips Valdez is better than Robles or Davis.
Matt Barnes is still the second best pitcher in the bullpen and needs to start being used as such.

I know they wanted innings out of Houck but they need to know better at this point. Should have been thrilled with 15 outs. Cora has been pushing a lot of wrong buttons lately With half of the bullpen down and the options down to a struggling Taylor, a messed up Barnes, and the terrible twins, Robles and Davis, what brilliant buttons should Cora have pushed? His options are terrible and at some point Houck has to learn how to navigate through the 6th inning. It's not like Whitlock was available.

Each one of those guys for a full inning and pray And I’m not so sure Houck does need to learn this season But agreed, the pen was in a rough spot

September 4th starters for the Red Sox MLB, AAA, AA were Houck, Seabold, and Groome.
5 3 0 0 0 7 6 1 0 0 3 4 5 2 0 0 0 10
The total being 16 6 0 0 3 21
That is 16 innings, no runs, just 3 walks, and 21 strikeouts!!! Those are some stats you have to love!!
I am hoping for Kutter Crawford to have a good MLB first game, although stats like yesterday might be too much to ask.
