What percentage of MLB players accrue six years of service time without being non tendered, or having a career that isn’t long enough to reach arbitration?
We can bump the minimum IP/PA threshold up quite a bit, and the percentage remains fairly small, no?

Did Cora change his mind? Rafaela being the starting CFer but also getting a few reps in the middle infield to stay fresh at those positions is not inconsistent. Absolutely agree. Assuming that (a) Rafaela starts the season in Worcester and (b) that O’Neill, Duran, Valdez are regulars with Refsnyder and Yoshida getting most of the other OF reps with Perez as the designated utility player, there is plenty of reason to reorient Rafaela to the IF so that he MIGHT become a super-sub in the second half—replacing any of Perez, Refsnyder, Duran or Yoshida as needed.

They were set to have a meeting regarding Ceddanne's future this weekend, my assumption is that they had it early on Friday, in which case this shows a change of plans by Cora as a result. It's possible I'm wrong and they haven't had the meeting yet, in which case it would be very odd for Cora to announce a change (he had played exclusively CF during the spring) right before a meeting regarding his future. So I'm making the assumption that the meeting occurred and this was part of the decision they made. You're making the assumption that the 2B/SS time is simply to 'stay fresh' at those positions. My assumptions are based off the posts/articles by Brown over the past two days, have you read/heard anything that adds to this?

I'm just saying we don't know that he changed his mind. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence and all that.
Not sure what difference it makes in any case.

Rafaela playing second base for the first time this spring today vs the Twins...
If there's a concern about Ceddy getting every day at-bats conflicting with O'Neill, Duran, Abreu (and tangentially CJ Cron/Yoshida when Yoshida plays LF?) also needing to eat, you'd figure him being able to play second when needed helps to alleviate that until Grissom is back.

The next 4 or 5 games should be a tell on what their plans are for Rafaela until Grissom is back.

My serious point is that 2B may be an issue if Grissom does not fill that bill for all kinds of reasons. It may turn out that the Sox need more help at 2B more than in the IF.

To be followed by Bleisie and then Yorkie.

If they do give some time to Rafaela at 2B, it will also be interesting to see who gets the most CF time. Lot's of valid options there, just none as good as him.

I know Cora had mentioned a platoon at 2B. Typically that’s a L/R thing, but depending on 1) how long Grissom is out, and 2) how comfortable Rafaela is both at 2B and switching between infield and outfield, there’s a case to be made for a de facto defensive platoon. Sox 2024 Starting Pitchers: Groundball to Fly-ball Ratio in 2023 Bello - 1.94 Houck - 1.92 Whitlock - 1.20 Pivetta - .87 Crawford - .71 No pitcher will be upset with having Rafaela’s defense in center. But the number of plays there will be different on days when it’s say Kutter Crawford out there (a heavy fly ball pitcher), as opposed to someone like Bello (where Rafaela might often get the ball in center merely after it’s squeaked by the second baseman) - and I don’t think it’s insane to speculate Rafaela would be the best non-Story defensive 2B on the roster. (With that said, we’re also talking about a 23 year old rookie here just trying to crack the team - asking him to be constantly moving around while he’s adapting to the big leagues is a big ask.)

Agree, fortunately he did a lot of that throughout his minor league career.

After 200 times of misspelling Ceddanne I promise I will eventually get it I've found it hard. I have to tell myself, "two double consonants in the first name, none in the last."

Unless they extend Rafaela now starting him in the Majors would feel widely inconsistent with the rest of their offseason strategy. It would be the clearest example of giving up long term value for short term gain. I'm not sure it's that black and white. If Rafaela is ready for the Majors, having him spent a month+ down in the minors could possibly stall his development. If he has nothing to learn in AAA, he shouldn't be in AAA. Is an extra year of service worth the possible risk of him stalling or regressing due to boredom? It's possible having him start the years in Boston is better long term for the Sox (and Rafaela) than the extra year of control. Plus, if he is any good, they'll (hopefully) lock him up before that extra year of control matters. And while he's a longshot for ROY, if he plays elite defense, hits 10-15 HRs and steals a bunch of bases... you never know. On another note to Rafaela hitting .080, that's improbable. To hit .080, he'd need a BAbip of .160 while striking out 50% of the time. It's just not going to happen. He might hit .195.

I think it’s pretty apparent he still has things to work on offensively which could reasonably happen in the minors and really he hasn’t spent all that much time in AAA. And in any case I don’t buy the argument that one month extra in the minors could totally break his development. With the injuries now it’s probably moot though, I think he starts in the majors if Refsnyder is out and if he’s not hitting well they’ll send him down later.

I don't have a strong view on whether they should game the service time, but if spending a month in AAA bores him to the point of regression, he's got much bigger problems that chasing out of the zone.

With Grissom and Refsnyder out for a while, and Rafaela showing every sign that he is ready, I think the Sox should keep him up to start the season. Based upon his performance they can always send him down when one or both of Grissom and Refsnyder come back. If he is too valuable to send down at that point, I do not view that as a negative, and would agree with what others have said, get that long term extension sooner rather than later.
