Really looking forward to the Giants/Dodgers series. They're kind of the West coast version of Sox/Yankees, even dating back to their New York roots. 1951 and 1962 were their biggest clashes so this has been along time coming. I thought it was amazing when the 108 win Red Sox played the 100 win Yankees in 2018, and then they faced the 103 win Astros, so the rivals combined for 208 wins, and then the Sox and Astros combined for 211 wins. Now a combined 213 wins as the 107 win Giants play the 106 win Dodgers who they were 10-9 against. Take that away and both teams were 97-46, nearly .690 ball. That 1 game season series advantage was the razor thin margin the Giants had over LA. The Dodgers would win just about every day and still couldnt close their daily 1 or 2 game gap. I think they caught the Giants momentarily before falling behind again. I just think it's incredible and look forward to see how it turns out. Too bad it's a best of 5 NLDS, rather than a best of 7 game NLCS. According to the Pythagorean record the Dodgers actually underachieved. They should have won 109 games while the Giants overachieved and probably should have won 103. The Giants got the best of the Dodgers in 1951 and 1962, but I think LA prevails in 5 games. 1951 one of the most famous HRs in history: 1962 doesn't get nearly any of the publicity that 1951 does. I always admired Ralph Branca who gave up the HR to Thompson in 51. He took his lumps with grace and dignity. I remember seeing him in Billy Crystal's movie Parental Guidance a couple of years before he passed away. But the 1962 season had the Dodgers and Giants tied at 101-61. Instead of a 1 game playoff like the 1978 Sox and Yanks had, the Dodgers and Giants played a 3 game series to break the tie and determine a pennant winner. For all the heroics of 1951's ending, the 1962 ending is usually not remembered. The Giants trailed the Dodger for most of July all the way until the final day of the season when they won, the Dodgers lost and they tied the Dodgers for 1st. The Giants won 2-1 on an 8th inning HR by Willie Mays and the Dodgers lost 1-0 on an 8th inning HR and Curt Simmons of the Cardinals shut them out. The Giants won the first game 8-0 behind Billy Pierce but the Dodgers got a walk off 9th inning win in the second game to stay alive and re-tie the Giants. In that game the Giants blew a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 6th when they foolishly pulled their starter and the pen imploded and gave up a touchdown to the Dodgers. The Giants tied them and a Ron Fairly sac fly in the last of the 9th saved the Dodgers season. Then in the final tiebreaking game, the Dodgers took a 4-2 lead into the top of the 9th but allowed 4 runs. It featured a Willie Mays RBI single, a game tying sac fly by Orlando Cepeda, 3 walks, the last by Jim Davenport putting the Giants ahead and an error that scored an insurance run. Not exactly epic, but a meltdown 2 outs away from the pennant by the Dodgers who then went down in order when the Giants Billy Pierce snuffed out their season. Terrible way to lose. At least the first time the Giants stole it (they were a great sign stealing team thanks to Sal Yvars' telescope). The second time around, the Dodgers gave it away. Like 1951 the Giants went down to the Yankees in the World Series although this time they went down in the 9th when trailing by a run and with the tying run on 3rd and the winning run on 2nd Willie McCovey's hot smash liner was caught by 2b Bobby Richardson. Ralph Terry hung on to win the decisive game of the World Series just two years after he lost the decisive game of the World Series when he surrendered Bill Mazeroski's game winning HR for the 1960 Pirates.

Not a save situation, not a clean start to the inning... there was only one way that inning was going to go when Kimbrell came in.

I swear, I would have been very happy to inform the White Sox of this as an outside consultant. I would have done it for only $1 million, too - a mere pittance, compared to what they're paying Kimbrel + the cost of giving away Nick Madrigal!
(I would have been willing to negotiate down to $500.)

Getting Robles and Davis (both better than Kimbrel has been) was the way to go.

Giants tying the Red Sox with 4 2000's WS titles (first three titles on 94, 92 and 88 win teams give me a break) is the worst thing that could still happen this postseason IMO.

If neither, some out there team like the Brewers.

I've disliked the Dodgers dating back to when I was a Boston Braves fan and continuing when I lived in SoCal and the Dodgers were always page 1, Angels page 2 even in The Orange County Register.
I view the Dodgers as the Yankees of the National League, Mookie or no Mookie.
They did have the greatest announcer of all time though.

And to the crosstown Cubbies?? Ouch.

The Giants are a fun team to watch and they were in their dynasty as well. They also have great announcers. Of all the remaining teams other than the Sox, only the Brewers and Giants have any appeal to me.
EDIT: It's amazing to me to see a team winning a 107 games, holding off the Dodger all-stars all season, and people are still trying to figure out how they did it, particularly with their lineup constructions. They're doing things no one has done and people still can't wrap their heads around it.
EDIT part deux: MIL is pretty boring though. Would be nice to see JBJ get an AB and turn into Cinderella.

The Brewers have some thrilling pitchers, though. And it would be cool. Milwaukee as title town?

Not Red Sox news, at least not yet, but Joey Cora released by the Pirates as a coach. I'd bet he'd be on the short list of coaches his brother would hire in a heartbeat.

LaRussa is still a nominee for manager of the year, tho, right? I don't know, it depends on how stupid the voters are. He's shepherded probably the most talented roster in the AL, playing in the weakest division, to a rather meh 93-win season (objectively less impressive than the Red Sox', Yankees', and Blue Jays' records playing in a much tougher division) and a likely early playoff exit, and added in some unnecessary and moronic drama along the way.

He is at best 4th or 5th man in the bullpen.... a 6th inning guy.

I am sure a grateful Sox nation is happy to see Mookie hitting .600 this postseason.

I am sure a grateful Sox nation is happy to see Mookie hitting .600 this postseason. I'm grateful for Verdugo's contributions for sure, despite all the singles Mookie has to this point. But to be clear, yeah, I'm pulling for Mookie to do well in the postseason as long as he's not facing the Red Sox.
