Another thought... Standard CBA caveats apply, but assuming the same basic structure remains in place - if they're *ever* going to go over the CBT, 2022 has to be the year, right? While they've still got Bogaerts, hopefully a healthy Sale, Eovaldi, and Kiké; and Devers and Verdugo coming into their primes? It's not that I think they have to "go for it now with the core in place," just that they have a chance to build a real good team next season, combined with a lot of money coming off the books after next season and a chance to re-make the roster considerably then. The go for it strategy is in play if the Sox raise their budget for 2022, which I think they will do after this reset the cap year. With Sale and Nate, they need to upgrade the number three starter. ERod only comes back on a sweetheart deal and as number four. The new number three has to be a guy who can go six regularly with success. I have no problem with choosing among Pivetta, Houck and Whitlock to round out the starters and providing bulk relief. I am less sure of an untested rookie in that role so they need to add there either with a rookie they trust or another body. As for position players, the extent to which one trades or buys big money bats also determines who goes. Will Renfroe, Dalbec, Duran, Kiké or Arroyo bring big reruns, esp if packaged together somehow? If yes, trade them all. Sign Bryant and Marte. Keep Kiké if possible simply because we do need a 2B in this scenario. If Sox can afford all that we get a real go for it all team.

Getting Gray out of Colorado would be interesting

Personally, if E-Rod declines his QO I'd let him walk - for the first time in a long time, we might be able to replace a starter internally who is a much cheaper option (Whitlock, Houck, Seabold). Use the money you would have spent on E-rod in other places and build up a bullpen and some additional starter depth. I like Raisel Iglesias depending on how high the bidding goes... I don’t think Whitlock’s ever pitched more than 80 innings so 100-110 is prob his top end next year.

Put on the trade block; Nathan Eovaldi - Sell high before free agency Christian Arroyo - If Jeter Downs is ready Xander Bogaerts - Sell high before opting out Bobby Dalbec - To add in any trade for better prospects Enrique Hernandez - Extend or trade, sell high before free agency Hunter Renfroe - Sell high J.D. Martinez - If he doesn't optout Extend; Devers So are you a Yankee fan or a Rays fan?

I'd have Whitlock & Houck battle it out for a rotation spot, and to be honest given Sale's coming off TJ surgery too I wouldn't hate a six man rotation to at least begin the year. Just want Bloom to accumulate as much depth as he possibly can in both the rotation & bullpen - give Cora the options.

Long time follower finally jumping in here.
For our guys: Hope that JD opts in and I am resigning Schwarber (if its reasonable). If its a 5 year deal you know that by at the latest years 4 and 5 he can be DH. Rolling With Duran and letting Renfroe go here.
Duran Kiké Devers Bogaerts Schwarb Martinez Verdugo Vazquez Arroyo
If Duran and Kiké can both be at least .260/.340 guys with their slug numbers, that will play well with their speed at the top. Beastly 3-6 hitters and productive 7-9.
Dalbec on the bench gives flexibility to reorganize the lineup if Duran just doesn't work out. This is what I am doing for the lineup.
Our rotation will be nice if we get the pieces to so that Houck and Pivetta are our 4th and 5th starters. I think the bullpen should be the area of most improvement. I actually wouldn't care if the big on market FA addition is Iglesias from LAA. We really need another sort of shutdown guy back there.

Martinez - If he doesn't optout Extend; Devers Here's a question. Are the ticket prices going to stay the same or increase next season? If thats the case, there is zero chance JD and Xander leaving is even remotely possible. JD can decide his own future but I think its very possible Xander signs a new deal this offseason that takes away his option years. Kiki is going nowhere he's insanely valuable to this team. As for Dalbec Eovaldi and Renfroe I'd test the market heavily. But I'm not giving Renfroe away either. The guy hit 30 bombs, played elite defense and is making 4 million next year. Someone would need to barrell me over to trade him. FWIW I think its a borderline lock that Iglesias is back and 60/40 that Schwarber is too.

Having both Schwarber and JD is not ideal because you're going to be weak on defense somewhere. I like JD a lot, but I guess I'm hoping he opts out, Schwarber becomes the DH, and Dalbec stays at first. I can't understand why people are treating Dalbec as an expendable piece -- after a horrendous start, he ended up with solid numbers for the season, and he showed in the second half that he could be a very valuable asset. Why wouldn't you want a guy like that at low cost?

I don't see much of a problem having the two of them overlapping for a year and then have replacement for JD at DH once he is gone (assuming he opts in this last year). Better than letting Schwarber walk, and JD leaving in a year and then not knowing what to do at DH

Not so much because of the 3 times thru the lineup strategy but to have guys healthy in Sept and October. We all know Sales history of breaking down late in a season and next yr will be even more dicey after 2 years off and coming back from TJ. Imagine a staff that starts with Sale, Thor, Eovaldi, Erod, Pivetta, Houck and Whitlock. That could be a lot of quality innings.

I like Schwarber, but I don't want to see him playing the infield next year.
Trading Renfroe for say, Aldo Ramirez, and then giving LF to Schwarber sounds good to me. Schwarber probably costs ~$10 million more than Renfroe. Schwarber's defensive stats are surprisingly okay in the OF.

But it does ding the outfield defense a bit, and I think that would make it all the more urgent to do something about the infield defense, where the options are all a bit awkward.

I actually am not convinced he will be the same. Even at a much advanced age, Verlander seems more likely to give a few productive years.

I like to see bullpen help John Gray and Willson Contreras by trade for Dalbec.

Wish list Starling Marte CF -- move Kiké to RF, move Renfroe for a nice young arm or two
Max Scherzer -- I wonder how interested he is to pitch for a team like LAD that likes to yank their starters so early. Also assumes he passes whatever medical tests are given.
Andrew McCutchen LF -- weak-half platoon with Verdugo
Raisel Iglesias/Kenley Jansen -- I kind of doubt Chaim pays full price for a closer but they need one (unless they make Pivetta the next Papelbon, which would be the most economical option). Rich Hill -- Remarkably threw 158.2 solid innings at age 41. Can't have too much starting pitching.
Re-sign Eduardo Rodriguez -- if the price is right Jose Iglesias SS/2B -- move Bogaerts to 3B and Devers to DH at least 80 games (or as long as Arroyo can stay healthy).
It's hard to imagine not going over the tax threshold for the next three years. All but Marte are likely to be 1-3 year signings, which would allow flexibility when it's time to get back under the threshold -- assuming the new CBA looks anything like the current one. I'm guessing there will be a half dozen or more relievers who I've never heard of that will be brought in to compete for spots.
Extend Kiké? I don't think Bogaerts or Devers gets extended this winter.

Verlander is a horse and probably still has a few good years left. Thor doesn't have his track record but very few do. I just have a feeling that he has a chance to be almost like Verlander post TJ for a bit less aav. Either way if the Sox do go big on somebody I would love to see it be an ace type pitcher, build that staff from the top down and everyone is elevated.

He threw 120 in 2018 and 82 this year if you include playoffs, but most importantly, the Verducci theory has been disproven (otherwise literally every minor league pitcher and every MLB starter who was healthy all year is getting Tommy John next year...). I think they could get him up to 150 next year and not worry too much about it.

I don’t think Dalbec’s trade value will ever be as high as it is right now. It can’t help that they didn’t believe in him enough to play him in the playoffs, though.
