My assumption is Whitlock will head back to the bullpen once Sale/Paxton join the rotation. Whitlock will be getting closer to his innings threshold, and this will be the timeframe for him get back to the bullpen. As many others have said, if he was a starter all year, he'd be out of innings well before the season ended. This plan gets him exposure to starting, builds his innings and allows him to end the year in the bullpen.

Why not propose a deal to the Padres. Both Dinelson Lamet and Matt Barnes desperately need a change of scenery and both have been horrific. Swap the players and if needed just shut Lamet down for the year and have him get the surgery he's been avoiding. Lamet has the stuff to be a legit closer.

Don’t see SD making that contract swap I was thinking of Lamet as a reclamation project too though

I don't think Barnes needs a change of scenery. His issue has been that his stuff fell off a cliff from his All Star peak last year and it has been slow to return. If and when his velocity comes back I'd expect his performance to turn around as well. FWIW he also looks a lot better this year by xERA (3.43) than ERA (7.84).

I've been expecting Cora to drop something like this. Been posting it on the game thread about it for a week now. Houck has been warming up for late in game situations for the past week. There just hasn't been a save situation in a while.
Cora wouldn't announce that Houck is directly the new closer. He'll probably get 70-80 percent of the save situations, with Strahm getting the rest depending on matchup situations. At least I think that's the new plan.

Makes sense to keep Whitlock's innings down, I hope this isn't a long term thing.
They need a RH reliever desperately, probably two guys. Winkowski helps a lot to do this. Without him and Bello looming, the Sox would have to stretch out Whitlock again.

The rest of the Whitlock quote was that his health would dictate what they do. I presume they're referring to the hip and not his innings by that.
Now, they were probably heading that way once Eovaldi and sale both got healthy anyway... whenever that may happen at this point. The fact that Winckowski has pitched reasonably well gives them the luxury of doing that sooner if they think the hip will respond better to bullpen usage than starter usage.

For what its worth it seems like Brasier's velocity has been ticking up. He was hitting 97 and 98 (97.6 on Baseball Savant) last night. I think he might come on strong like the end of last season.

Are they going to keep Diekman on the roster over better options due to his contract?
Thats the question for me. He hasn’t been good and he is old.

Noticed that too. He’s a different pitcher at that velo band than he is at 93-95. Actually usable. Didn’t go well last night but lately it’s been pretty good
