Have to see the dollars but I feel rather indifferent as of right now on this.
Edit: after further research I'm not too happy with this but assuming it's for Martin Pérez money or less I can at least see why they went for him. They need a heck of a lot more than wacha for the rotation though.

"Solid in a starting role" = 5.05 ERA/5.51 xERA, for those keeping score at home.
Seems okay to me as like a 6th starter, or like what Andriese was supposed to be last year.

Not at all impressed. I suppose he's the RH replacement for Martin Perez?
He has been terrible for quite awhile. I really don't see how this signing helps them. I wouldn't want this guy taking a semi-regular turn in the rotation and I really don't want him coming out of the pen. He was easily one of the worst pitchers the Rays had.
I was hoping the Sox would see a lot of him in the playoffs. That's how low I regard his pitching.

If that equates to solid than I guess almost every single starter in the league is solid? I don't expect passan to say this guys a bum but he also doesn't need to stretch it that far either.

These type of moves generally don’t work out that well for the Sox. I don’t like it.

Yes, hard to see the appeal here, except as an extra arm to toss into the mix. Maybe they see something that makes them think they can work with him? His walk rate is good, but my goodness! -- the home runs!

Love it. Gotta imagine it's for very little money.
Give me a bunch of #5 starters on value contracts and stuff the surplus ones in the pen.

He was downright horrible in June and August but relatively decent the other months of the year. Perhaps they think they can help him stay more consistent and avoid those two months of awfulness?

Not bad in September. If he can pitch a lot of games where he goes 5-6 innings and gives up 0-3 runs, this team can win a lot of those games (if they pick up a couple of bats and relievers). Has experience in the bullpen, so can be a sixth starter/ swing man.

So get rid of the cutter, and Wacha is suddenly a good pitcher? That's what the numbers indicate. Would be surprised to see that play out over a full season.

Rotation depth with possibly a little upside if the post pitch-usage change numbers hold
I look at him as a Perez replacement. Hoping for a more consistent, average 120 innings

Then again, Wacha could be another Nick Pivetta - a guy whose top line numbers look ugly, but who also has some talent and maybe just needs a change in approach. Worst case scenario is that he's this year's Garrett Richards.

I’m fine with it. Maybe he can continue to build on his last 5 starts last year and at the very least give some of the guys in AAA some time to see if they can contribute by mid season.

Worst case scenario is that he's this year's Garrett Richards. Yeah, I used Perez as a comparison but Richards, the RHP, is a better comparison. Like Richards, Wacha was a really good pitcher - about 8 or 9 years ago. I remember how good he was when he came up with the Cardinals. He was unhittable that Sept 2013 and throughout the playoffs until the Sox finally got him - during the most famous game at Fenway Park in our lifetime. Of course, I was hoping not to see another Garrett Richards in 2022. And Wacha does have far better control.

Another question to ask.
If Wacha was so improved why did the Rays bypass him as a starting option on Game 4 of the ALDS and elect to do a bullpen by committee with McHugh starting?
I get that he wasn't probably stretched out enough to go 5 innings, but I would think they would have trusted him more?

Great signing. Highly doubt this is a guaranteed starter spot. He’s a 6-7th option. We needed this. Smart signing. Now you can grab a Stroman and your SP is done. RP and 1 more solid hitter. We got this!

I like Wacha as a back end of the rotation guy. If he’s the guy they want to be their #3, then I don’t like it. Still hoping they get a Gray/Anderson type as a mid-rotation option.

One caveat to the strong regular-season finish, though: The Sox tattooed him in the playoffs.
