Again we'll try to keep this separate from the draft thread as best as we can. In general though, if you want to talk about a college player in terms of their draft status or appeal, please do so in the draft thread. BA released their preseason Top 25 list with Texas leading the way:

I think Texas, Vandy, LSU, Mississippi State and Arkansas (not exactly bold selections on that list, I know) will be teams I'll go a little further out of my way to catch. Interesting combinations of good baseball and guys who could show up in the MLB some day.

State and Arkansas I'll be able to catch other programs that might have some talent like Auburn, South Carolina, etc. LSU and Vandy are away this year, sadly.

Couple of new faces in the SEC now.

The season is upon us! Here's a nice Week 1 guide with pitching matchups courtesy of Prospects Live. One big matchup out of the gates to highlight:

Some real games going on today - Landon Sims looked excellent in his start for Mississippi State. Seen him mocked in the general area the Sox pick, but wouldn't be surprised if he's gone by then given the college pitcher injuries already.

Chase DeLauter - top 10 projected pick - going 0/3 with 3 SOs against one of the few top end major conference arms he's likely to see this year. Probably won't mean much - he killed the Cape Cod League over the summer - but I wonder if this is a game people are going to go back to come draft time.

His k swings were ugly too, it looked like he was dragging his bat through sand. Anything less than a stellar season, and he's out of RD 1

His k swings were ugly too, it looked like he was dragging his bat through sand. Anything less than a stellar season, and he's out of RD 1 Ended up doubling in his last appearance, so he went 1/4 on the night, though not a really impressive piece of hitting there either. Saw the strikeout pitches in the highlights at least (watching OSU-Vandy instead), and two incredibly ugly swings, like really bad, and one looking. If he has a a Jud Fabian type year this year he has the potential to fall a bit further. It only takes one team to look at his RS freshmen + Cape Cod seasons and decide to take a risk though. Be interesting if he hits well, but just doesn't end up doing it against the few major conference teams they play. JMU has a couple games against Tennessee, Maryland, and Virginia Teach, and that's it. Not really fair to him, but not a lot of opportunities to really prove it on the year. Parker Messick is a good pitcher and will probably get picked relatively early in the draft, but there will be plenty of Parker Messicks Delauter will have to face in the minors, let alone the show.

According to their website, 3U, and a groundout to short. No idea how he actually looked in them, but putting the ball in play twice might be an improvement. Hubbart'll be an interesting guy to watch this year also.

It's the second game of the season, but the larger point is that these might have been the only two games this season where DeLauter faces top level pitching, and it's something he needs to be able to show. Depends on how Tennessee shakes out with Blade Tidwell out for the season already and Seth Halvorsen missing the beginning of the year. Chase Burns looks good, but still. I feel for the guy, because the first two games are probably not when he wanted to face the top two pitchers on the schedule.
edit: Also, I'm not giving up on DeLauter after two games, just like I haven't given up on Fabian really (though I wasn't all that high on him comparatively). Just that this was an opportunity missed.

Sheesh, that catch... Red Sox need to draft Orndorff with their Fabian compensation pick.
