I'm trying to think of a good way to start a post with photos from last fall, but a) that's hard, and b) it's safe to say these have waited long enough. So Sherman, set the Wayback Machine to last September, in a brief interlude when it almost felt safe to travel, and when, desperately missing the Lowell Spinners, I decided I was not going to wait for spring to see some of the youngsters!
The FCL Red Sox played a doubleheader on Monday 9/13, making up a rainout, which pushed the start back to 10am from noon; my flight didn't land until 10:30am so I rushed straight to the ballpark, grabbed my gear and ran into the park. Guess who was at the plate!
Whoops. Note to future self--never take gear directly from the air conditioned plane into September Fort Myers humidity. Liquid condensed over everything, including the lens.
There's Marcelo Mayer, after I dried the lens off.
Bryan Gonzalez and a fascinating scoreboard message. (IIRC Thaddeus Ward won the gold. I didn't see him but did see Bryan Mata in the stands.)
I don't think there was any social distancing in the bullpen. There sure was in the stands, though--just a handful of fans/family and another photographer, and one of my favorite security guys. We weren't allowed to go into the seats between the concourse and the field, which made shooting through the netting a little tricky.
Luis De La Rosa had started the game, and I was glad he pitched an inning after I got there. We had a little rain, which probably saved me from death by frying.
Eddinson Paulino played third.
B.J. Vela at second.
It's nice to have backup...
... although sometimes it's nice when people get out of the way (here to let first baseman Cuba Bess catch the ball).
Yorberto Mejicano.
DH Freddy Valdez
Miguel Ugueto.
Maceo Campbell was next up out of the pen.
The Sox put together a couple of runs in the fifth, with Cuba Bess scoring...
... on a Yorberto Mejicano single...
... and Freddy Valdez singling...
... to drive in Phillip Sikes. (Mejicano would also score on a botched pickoff.)
Nate Tellier had the last inning.
Final score of Game 1: a 4-0 Red Sox win.
