I think it is going to be extremely interesting to see how Alex Cora uses his potential starting pitchers.
There is likely no chance Sale starts a MLB game before May, so Eovaldi is our #1, Pivetta looked great and is almost certainly #2, Cora says Houck will likely slot in the rotation, I don't see Rich Hill working out of the bullpen, so that would leave Whitlock and Wacha as potential #5's. Then when Sale returns things will get even more interesting.
I'm really excited to see if Cora is going to play it traditionally 1-5 starters or if he will get creative with the arms after Sale and Eovaldi. I'm sure performance will be the deciding factor, but there are so many possibilities once Sale is back, it'll be a lot of fun, and even moreso if we throw Big Maple in the mix in late summer!

Eovaldi, Pivetta, Hill, and Sale ASAP. Set (as long as Hill holds up).
Houck seems 99% certain.
Personally, I’d far rather Whitlock start than Wacha. Whitlock could be awesome. Wacha could be adequate. BUT… I have real concerns about the bullpen, and they may really need Whitlock as a kind of lock-down pre-9th high leverage guy. If Wacha is in the pen instead, I don’t see anyone who doesn’t make me really, really nervous.

Based on who they're starting in games, it's lined up to be Eovaldi, Pivetta, Houck, Wacha, Hill.

They’re going to have to manage innings for Hill and Whitlock in particular.
Enter Derek Holland.

They’re going to have to manage innings for Hill and Whitlock in particular. Enter Derek Holland. FWIW, he was reasonably effective in the second half last year, and very effective in September, in a true bullpen role. The fact that we're seeing that Davis and Darwinzon are getting stretched a bit and not Holland speaks to that, I think.

We'll have to see when he makes his first appearance, but that the starts have gone/are scheduled to go as I lined up above is telling, I think. The first game was a bullpen game, then they went Eovaldi on the start to line up for Opening Day, Pivetta then Houck, Wacha today, and Hill tomorrow. We'll have to see if he follows Hill (I have a feeling he will - they didn't list tomorrow's relievers in the notes this morning) or pitches the next day or what.

Is the rotation set or does Bloom bring in another arm like Chris Archer, Johnny Cueto, etc?

Yeah based on who's out there and other more pressing needs, I don't see them getting another starting pitcher unless it's on a minor league deal to stash them.

I would like us to be in on the Oakland starters. Archer would also be an interesting pick up or could be

I guess you could put this in the bullpen thread, too, but in an Athletic article by Eno Sarris with bold predictions for the season (I'll link it below), he had a chart of the teams with the most "above-average" pitchers, based on FIP projections from one of Fangraphs' tools. The Sox had 9, which was tied for 7th (Dodgers Giants Rays with 11, Braves White Sox Twins with 10, Yankees also had 9). Not something I'm going to put all the stock in the world into, but interesting to note. I'd just screenshot the chart but didn't know if that was going too far with the paywall breaching. There's also a very nice Devers prediction, but again I don't want to give too much away. theathletic.com/3187448/2022/03/25/sarris-ten-bold-predictions-for-a-wacky-season/

I'm starting to worry about Houck being ready for the 10th in the Bronx if he doesn't find his control soon. Do they push him back to the Detroit series? Skip him? Add Crawford to the roster to take his spot in the rotation while he continues to work? Or maybe a trade for an established guy from CIN or OAK?

I worry we’re going to see a lot of 3 and 4 innings starts out of Hill, Wacha, And Houck. The bullpen is going to be heavily relied on early in the season. IMO, makes sense to bring in a guy like Cueto and use Houck, Whitlock, Strahm in long relief. Maybe Davis, and Valdez can eat some innings. Holland when he’s ready could also be used. Who knows how long Sale and Taylor are going to be out. i don’t feel like Bloom wants to part with anything of value for Montas, Manea, Castillo, etc. but I wouldn’t be opposed to it as long as it doesn’t come at the expense of Casas, Mayer or Yorke.

I wonder if we'll get a Jay Grrome start here soon. Not a lot of 40 man options left and there aren't many obvious cuts.

I just realized Ohtani is a FA after this season. We will need a DH and a starter. Can I dream?

You know Sale is starting to annoy me. I been behind him because he is a quality guy but enough is enough with this guy. What did breaking a tv prove. He should of been stating against the MFY’S. instead we played 3 against the Rays half the pitching isn’t available and Devers missed 2 games. Now we’re 2 games in this series and it’s not even the same team as a month ago. Devers got all the RBI’S in the first game. I’m disappointed.
I know where not catching the MFY’S. But the timing sucks.
