Who will be the last five players on the Opening Day roster?

With a week to go, Travis Shaw is 0-for-17 with 7 Ks. If he doesn't turn it around in a big way, there's no way you can reward him with a big-league roster spot. Especially the way that Bobby D. is swinging it. Shaw is no threat to Dalbec's playing time regardless of what happens. He might get a few games against tough RHP, but that's it.

Agreed... in Worcester...
EDIT: For anyone who doesn't think the players follow this forum, Travis responds with an RBI single in the fifth...
EDIT (part deux): ... and a double into the RF corner in the 8th...

Dalbec vs hard throwing RHP is arguably a bigger problem than whatever the current plan is for the OF vs LHP. If not Shaw then you're looking at uh, Franchy? for those at bats. Does anyone remember if Franchy looked like he could play 1B?

Does anyone remember if Franchy looked like he could play 1B? Dalbec seems to be doing okay this spring against RHP. One of his early HRs this spring (first game?) was off a high fastball. Good interview with Bradfo this week in which Bobby explains how Josh Donaldson (of all people) gave him advice about "adjusting his eyes" to reach high fastballs while Bobby was holding him on 1B one time last season. That's apparently a thing he really worked on in the off-season.
I don't remember Franchy being terrible at 1B. Played a little there in Worcester too.
He came up as a SS and didn't switch to OF until A-ball.
I would guess that Franchy starts the year in Worcester and will need to prove himself there again before getting called back up.
If Shaw doesn't make it, I think Refsnyder has an inside track as a RHH who can play all three OF positions. According to AC, the current backup 1B is Vazquez (who mentioned earlier this spring that he played there some this winter in PR and doesn't particularly enjoy it). Of course, Shaw isn't on the 40-man, so that might've factored into AC mentioning Vazquez instead of him (along with Shaw starting 0-for-17).

Hopefully Casas is leading the minors in OPS on May 1st and we no longer have to debate the merits of these scrubs

If Bobby fails once the season begins, or if he is injured or Devers is injured, then the Casas question will come front and center. Vasquez might be the emergency fall back name. But does anyone know if Arroyo, Sanchez, Refsnyder or even Aruaz have first base experience.

They tried Arroyo at 1B last year and he injured himself almost immediately stretching for a throw. Who knows if they're willing to try that again.

That or Kiké potentially to the IF With a fully healthy team I doubt we see much Hernandez in the IF with Story in town now. Only way it'd make sense is if they decide to kick Devers over to first. Hernandez will probably play some games at 2nd to keep guys fresh but it still doesn't solve first base depth.

It will be a shame to lose Yolmer Sanchez. Switch-hitting GG 2B (2019) who came to camp to win a UT job and all he's done is hit and play good defense. Can play all three IF positions but most experience at 2B. The Story signing may have affected him the most.
Assuming 13 position players with Arroyo making the team, there are two spots available for Sanchez, Arauz, Shaw, or Refsnyder (I don't think Franchy is a consideration until mid-season). Shaw's bat has come on late and he's a known commodity at a position of need, so I think he has an inside track. Arauz's bat has not come on and although he's still only 23, I don't see much ceiling above what he's shown. Refsnyder also hasn't hit and he's made some questionable plays in the OF (and he's played only 38 innings of 1B, majors and minors combined, since 2017, so he's not any kind of "super UT").
With Story aboard, there's no need for a pure SS at the UT spot. If it's me, I'm designating Arauz to make room for Yolmer.

Doesn't seem like Shaw would've been told he's "trending towards making the team" if they had a Hosmer or Myers trade lined up or at least as a decent possibility. I'll keep hoping though

No to Hosmer, and I don't care what prospects he'd come with. His contract is too expensive, and too long.
OK to Myers, but he's in his final contract year. Which means no great prospects. Through in an Aruaz and lesser pitching prospect, and maybe get something good with Myers.
But SD is looking for outfielders, so why dump Myers?

Doesn't seem like Shaw would've been told he's "trending towards making the team" if they had a Hosmer or Myers trade lined up or at least as a decent possibility. I'll keep hoping though I took that to mean that they were working on clearing a 40-man spot.
Which also tells you that guys not on the 40-man at present are less likely to make the team.
Re the 15th pitcher, that guy is ... the 15th pitcher. Not only does he almost never pitch in high leverage, he gets sent down on April 30. So it's very likely to be either Garza or someone just like him (options left) that they like even better. I think the odds of such a swap are solid, since it's very easy to pass guys through waivers at the moment teams are finalizing their rosters.
The last position player is more interesting, because right now it looks like Arroyo may well be filling two different bench spots, 4th OFer / JBJ platoon partner, and 4th (backup) skill infielder. I love that idea and the thought that Arroyo is Brockstar V2.0.
If this is the case, then the last guy on the bench only gets into games when you need Arroyo for both his roles simultaneously.
The easiest thing to do is just keep Arauz, who can start at 3B against super-tough LHP, and at 2B, SS, and 3B when someone needs a day off against a LHP and Arroyo is busy playing RF. You could of course see them picking up a guy as good or better who fits that description, allowing Arauz to continue to play everyday in AAA. That would be the best solution, especially if the guy were a wizard SS defender, allowing you to rest Xander optimally (GB pitcher on the mound, GB-hitting team). Options left would be ... optional.
And that's because this guy is very likely a placeholder for Duran, just as Shaw is one for Casas. And when Casas comes up, that moves Dalbec into the OF picture, so picking up an OFer for the last spot instead of filling it with an extra skill infielder seems unlikely. If they do grab someone, it will be someone with options left that they really like.
So ... be on the lookout for a guy whose inability to hit RHP has kept him out of a starting SS job and relegated him to a backup, there and at 3B and 2B.

BTW, this poll was pretty much meaningless because Crawford was listed neither as a lock or a candidate, and nobody caught that except the rookie Yaz1971. So almost everyone's math was off by one.
There are still 5 roster spots that aren't certain (Davis should have been a lock instead of Darwinzon, but that evens out), 3 pitchers and 2 position players. The candidates are:
Crawford Valdez Garza Schreiber * Danish *
Acquisition
Shaw *
Arauz Refsnyder * Cordero *
Acquisition
That plus Robles (who won't be ready) gives you the 33 guys still in camp.
I think Crawford, Valdez, and Shaw are nearly certain.

So it looks like: Eovaldi, Pivetta, Houck, Wacha, Hill Barnes, Brasier, Diekman, Straham, Sawamura, Whitlock, Crawford, Valdez, Garza, Schreiber (assuming Robles isn't ready) Vazquez, Plawecki Dalbec, Story, Bogaerts, Devers, Shaw, Arroyo Verdugo, Hernandez, Bradley, Martinez, Cordero (or perhaps Upton or another RH OF?)

Lol conflicting sources s
According to a source, the Red Sox have told Rob Refsnyder that he will not make the team out of camp. For now, he's agreed to report to Triple-A. Full 40-man seems to have been a factor in the team's decision.

Also factoring in is the fact that he’s not good at baseball

Full 40-man seems to have been a factor in the team's decision. Well, if Refsnyder isn't making the team, then perhaps Franchy Cordero did make the team, unless they're acquiring somebody from outside the organization, which might well be the case as I don't think they need yet another LH hitting OF or another LH hitting 1b with Shaw having made the team. They're not going to add a 16th pitcher so perhaps the Sox are getting Upton or somebody else who's a RH hitting OF for the bench.

And as I ran down above, a chance they acquire a SS / util who can hit lefties a little. There's no role for an OFer if Arroyo can play there.
Incidentally, the tweet here is not appearing at all if you don't have a Twitter account. And occasionally Tweets do appear but only partially. Always a good idea to summarize it in text.
