Watching Cubs-Brewers game. Seiya Suzuki: very very disciplined hitter (2 BBs and a sharp line drive single)

Adell might be becoming the poster child for rushing a kid through the minors. No approach, no defensive development, just a mature frame and game ready power.

Great call. Beer was a masher in college and a first round pick, but his prospect status kind of fell off of the map because he gets hurt pretty often. But now with the universal DH, he might become a solid player if he can just stay healthy (shoulder injury last year).

Cleveland locked up Myles Straw for 5 years/$25 million, getting one year of free agency, plus two more $8 million club options. Dude put up 3.7 WAR last year. I'd sure like to have that contract on the books. The Astros traded him away for a JAG reliever last year

Maybe someone who knows Baseball Ref's research tools a little better than I do could look this up (and I was working a golf tournament all day so I may have just missed it mentioned) - is today's Guardians/Royals game the first game ever with no earned runs and no errors?

Doubtful. I'm sure there have been 1-0 games where the game was decided on a passed ball by the catcher which isn't an error but would be an unearned run.

Roki Sasaki: first perfect game in Japan since 1994, record-tying 19 strikeouts, struck out 13 straight batters at one point. Best NPB pitching performance ever?

Why do I feel the balls are juiced again? The balls are flying out of the park to start the Season

No matter how bad it gets, at least we're not Reds fans.

I watch LAA games regularly and I’m confident in saying that Jo Adell is the worst defensive OFer in MLB. Add in his contact issues and I just don’t understand how the hell that guy was considered a top 3 prospect in baseball.

So actually, because Gabe Kapler is not a moron, he was supporting Dubon, and telling him that it is, in fact, fine to try hard in the 6th inning of a baseball game. Joe Posnanski had a good column about this.
(I always think it's such a pathetic self-own when teams whine like the Padres did here. "You're still trying to compete? You jerks, you know perfectly well we don't have a chance to come back in this game.")

Any “rule” that says you should stop trying is dumb. Don’t bunt to break up a no-hitter? People pay to see teams *try.* I get not disrespecting the opposition, but respecting the game means doing your best. Maybe this helps get the kid rolling?

I don't even understand the logic of bunting for a hit being unsportsmanlike, but looking for a good pitch to hit and swinging really hard at it being acceptable.

I remember the melee when the Sox and Marlins were playing in 2003 and Jack McKeon took offense to the Sox tagging up in a 25-8 game or whatever the score was - I remember the Sox scoring 14 runs in the 1st inning as Pavano started that game for the eventual world champion Marlins. There was a beanball war and/or some angry words by McKeon about the Sox running up the score. Until they institute a mercy rule teams should try as hard as they can. Kudos to Gabe Kapler (who had just joined the Sox during that game if I recall correctly) for saying that rule is stupid, and supporting his player.

The Padres were also apparently still shifting. "You have to stop trying but we don't" is an extra-dumb extension of The Unwritten Rules.

Dave Roberts is trying too hard. How do you pull kershaw with 80 pitches, In the middle of a perfect game?
Add, so happy it didn’t work out

Gotta let him go for a perfect game and just accept that it's going to hurt your chances of winning the division and world series by some minuscule amount. Dodgers fans would remember their favorite pitcher tossing a perfecto for decades.

The unwritten rules were basically written by pitchers, right? OK to throw at guys’ heads, but don’t you dare try to bunt for a hit or pimp a home run?
