Hunter Renfroe has 8 HR’s this season. Just as an FYI. And a .265 OBP. He's cruising toward another utterly average season.
(Yes, I know, the replacement plan was wanting. But Renfroe was utterly replaceable. My own personal plan B (or C?), Tommy Pham, has a higher wRC+ and WAR total than Renfroe.)
I’ll say in defense of the FO and Cora that by the end of the year everyone’s numbers might balance out such that overall, say, Kiké might well be as good as Renfroe. It is just that the Sox could have used Renfroe’s averageness *now* — the season will be lost by the time guys like Kiké and Verdugo have their big streaks. But no one can *plan* for a full-team ice age for the first 1/4 of the season. I think it is fair to chalk this season up as cursed. There were planning mistakes, yes, but it also seems like one of those years when everything that could go wrong did.

My point is just that it's not like Renfroe was *the one that got away*; there were multiple ways they could have replaced his production. Ditto Benintendi (whose production they did replace... with Renfroe).
But yes on your bigger point. Kudos to anyone who saw this team having one of the worst offenses in the league, but as far as I know literally no one publicly predicted that.

No, I’m agreeing. If he *seems* like the one who got away it is because his homers coincide with the Sox terrible start, but that was impossible to predict. Yes, they blew it in RF, but with everything that has sucked, short of adding Trout to the OF, it is tough to see it being the difference.

Lucky you. I stopped drinking a month ago. Between the Celtics Sox and house search its looking really tempting haha Good for you, man! Stick with it. Giving up alcohol is not easy, but is one of the best things you can do. I started wearing a fitness tracker and I was shocked at what alcohol did to my recovery stats the next day. Even just a glass of wine. You don’t need that crap. Thank you. Wife has been supportive so its been an interesting time to say the least haha.

Most of the damage vs. LHP to this point, with OPS splits of .632/1.112 -- he'd be a great platoon partner with JBJ!
I'm frankly glad that I don't have to see him take serpentine routes toward fly balls anymore. Well wishes either way.
