Huh.
Winckowski out after two scoreless innings... 32 pitches.
Hope there's no injury.

Scheduled two inning start?
Managing his workload?

This is likely what they did last week with Liu. Might be what they do now instead of skipping starts, which makes sense - don't take a guy out of his routine in the name of managing workload but still save bullets.
That said, a bit weird they did it with Winckowski, who had missed a start in April and is still only at 19.2 IP, compared with guys like Santos, Seabold, Drohan, and Walter, who are over 30 IP. May have to do with 2021 workload, as Winckowski was at 123 including the AFL, which led the system.

Entering today, Downs 1st 2 weeks: 10 G, 47 PA, 2 HR, 4 BB, 21 K, .233/.298/.419 (even w/ .400 BABIP) Since: 17 G, 72 PA, 5 HR, 13 BB, 18 K, .228/.389/.544 (despite .235 BABIP)
As I tweeted, this oversimplifies a clear progression in his game log of walks increasing in quantity and K's decreasing - and weirdly, BABIP going down despite everything else going up, which leads to the still-low BA.
Hopefully he's figuring it out this time. That'd be a nice get.

Would be nice if the Ks could dip below 25% but an 18% walk rate would be a great thing to keep.

Looking more and more like a starter the higher he climbs and performs…

If you want to break the second period down further:
Syr/Buf series: 11 G, 49 PA, 3 HR, 9 BB, 13 K, .250/.388/.550 (.292 BABIP) Tol series + yesterday: 6 G, 23 PA, 2 HR, 4 BB, 5 K, .177/.391/.529 (.100 BABIP (!!))
Similar walk rate, even better K rate, brutal BIP luck that hides how much better he hit, although SSS of course.
Unfortunately, 0-for-4, 2 K today probably evens it all out. BIP outs were both flyouts to the OF.

Any chance Winchowski can come up now and contribute in the pen? Be similar to the role Whitlock had?

Eovaldi, Pivetta, Whitlock, and Houck are in the rotation, and there are two off days, but if Hill and Wacha need longer then Winckowski might be a logical choice as a starter…..or he might be the next “Whitlock” multi inning pitcher for Boston.

Chris, if Downs were to hit well enough to be called up after Bogaerts accepts a hypothetical trade to the Cardinals, would Story move back to SS with Downs at 2B or would Story stay at 2B?

Downs has been very good at SS this year. I was thinking about this today, although in the context of Xander walking next year. I'll say this - Downs might be the best defender of the three now, but I'm not sure what they'd do though in any combination thereof. It is very interesting that Downs is playing nothing but shortstop right now, although I guess there's no reason to get him work at 2B if he's playing SS well, because they're not going to bench Story.

Downs a better defender than Story? That sounds a lot better than the "potential average defender" description on the scouting report. Do you think that needs to be updated?

He has steadily improved over his time there. He went from can't play short when they traded for him to could probably handle SS part time (as you obviously have read in the scouting report that notes he "showed better at shortstop in 2021 than expected"), to the glove looking fine at SS now.

My best guess is Downs is -3 runs a year at SS in the majors, average at 2B, and a couple runs above average on the bases.

Blaze with his second HR of the year. Eduardo Lopez follows with a big fly too. Delmarva pitcher name is Dan Hammer so that may explain it.
