Benintendi trade primer:
If Josh Winckowski gives them a Nick Pivetta quality season or two: Red Sox win If Winkcowski is a solid bullpen piece for several years: meh, whatever If Winckowski is a bust: Red Sox lose
Everyone else in the trade could currently be acquired for a bag of baseballs. Khalil Lee, Freddy Valdez, the Royals pitchers we got and Franchy.

A few things I learned from listening to Will Flemming and Tom Gordon call last night's game:
1) George Howard Brett, who was Flash's teammate when Flash was coming up, was one of his favorite teammates and Brett's nickname was "Lou" (no explanation given but that's how Flash kept referring to him).
2) Like Lou, Flash used pine tar. No apologies offered, very matter-of-fact about it. Wanted to feel the ball, particularly for his curve and in inclement weather.
3) Will had an extended conversation with Rangers manager Chris Woodward, who was the LAD bench coach in 2018, before the Friday's game. Not sure why it took until garbage time in the second game of the series, but when Rich Hill was allowed to start the 7th inning, Will relayed this story about Game 4 of the 2018 WS, as told to him by Woodward: The Dodgers dugout actually knew that Ryan Madsen was tipping his changeup but they continued to use him, hoping that other teams hadn't noticed. Apparently, the Braves and Brewers didn't notice because Madsen gave up only one run in seven combined appearances in their first two playoff series. His first to games in the WS went 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, and 0.1 IP, one groundout (games 2 and 3). So in the 7th inning of Game 4, after yanking Hill during what could have been remembered as a WS performance for the ages that pulled LAD even in the series, Dave Roberts put Madsen in with a 4-0 lead (after Scott Alexander walked his only batter, Brockstar, moving Bogie to second) and, according to Woodward, they just prayed that the Sox hadn't figured out Madsen's changeup tell. After ALCS hero JBJ, hitting for Vazquez, popped to second, Mitchie Two Bags pinch hit for Matt Barnes and hit a first-pitch changeup into the RF bleachers. Moreland later stated that he was "sitting changeup." That made it 4-3 and the Sox never looked back, outscoring the Dodgers 11-3 the rest of the series. Can't help but wonder how often that happens (viz. a manager putting a guy into a big game who he knows is tipping).

Not meaning to rehash old trade talk, but if Franchy turns into any kind of positive win player, whether it's a bench piece or semi regular player. With Winckoski included, the Benintendi trade is a landslide win in favor of the Sox. I don't even think the Mets got anything positive out of that deal. Kansas City will get 2 meh seasons out of Benintendi. Benintendi is having a meh season? Wish all the Sox OF were having his men season. ….regardless, KC payed $15,000,000 and Beni is gone after this season. Boston used the saving for Renfroe last year and made the ALCS, and they have 5 players long after this season IMO it is a win!

Rolling again. Unpopular opinion....... Sox are so good they purposely gave the rest of the league a huge start by throwing ganes to make the season more interesting 2🧐👀👀

I’m not arguing about the trade overall, but I only count guys who make it. That won’t be 5.

Man if that was bases loaded for our big FA pickup, I’d really be wondering about a first pitch groundout against a guy who keeps going deep in counts.

that's a great read. Thanks for posting. I figured it was the players, but I would love to see them again. And owners could sell more ad space, as if we need that.

As I recall, the bullpen carts were stopped as a way of speeding up the game and also as a way to allow the incoming pitcher an opportunity to warm up with a light jog to the mound.

My, how our offense can create the most unexpected Cy Young candidates.

The article does a great job of discussing that. It seems it was a confluence of things, including the stuff you mentioned. No one really knows if it was one major reason

DOB and Millar are off on the Greene thing. Young guy with that arm? Health is more important than the no-hitter. He gets hurt, it is millions of dollars the kid loses.

Weird how last season the Red Sox staff was so stingy in regards to giving up homeruns - especially early in the year. This season it is a different tale.

My, how our offense can create the most unexpected Cy Young candidates. Perez entered the game with a 2.10 ERA in 6 starts with a 0.99 WHIP.
Clearly the Rangers figured out how he can be successful and he's made some really good pitches today.
I recall last year around this time, he was leading the league in called third strikes. He was a big part of the Sox racing out to an early division lead. Didn't fall apart until later.
