what is the reason that the Sox are being so reluctant to use that new pitch calling tech ? any reporting on that ? Thought the TV broadcast said they are mostly all using it now with a few exceptions (forgot who). Perhaps there wasn't time for the kid and Vazquez to get together on it.

Winck has thrown a few nice sliders. I assume it is nerves, but the command is not great. Good it is the Orioles.

it's a live arm, for sure. Stay healthy, keep pitching well and he should have a spot on the big league roster this year.

On the radio broadcast you could hear the scouts heckling Winckowski after he worked out of that first-inning jam.
"That's not gonna cut it, kid!" "Yeah, you sucked out there!"

I remember years ago (mid-1980s) reading one of those Bill James Baseball abstracts where Bill mentioned how Earl Weaver used to manage his lineups for double headers. If I remember correctly he would start his 1st game lineup resting several starters, and the opposing team would usually have their normal lineup. As the game progressed, he would begin replacing the backups with the regular starters if the game was close - so that by the end of the game it was practically the normal starting lineup. Then in the second game against the opposing team's weaker lineup (they having rested some of their normal starters) Earl would start the A-team and have an advantage in the night-cap. I always thought that was pretty smart. That was a long time ago and I know the game has changed. But I've never heard of another manager using this strategy since. Bill James went on to say Weaver had a very good record in winning both games of double headers - better than most anyway. Seems like 75% of the time teams split the 2 games.

The odds say it should be a split half the time but it does seem like it's more often.

Mazz being better informed than Speier about the Benintendi trade return is a major upset.

Dave, please tell us how this kid “looks like he belongs” again. That’s the kind of smart analysis we all need.

Winckowski seems like a 1-2 inning reliever. He has 2 different fastballs and a slider. The Orioles making adjustments really quick to him 2nd time around.
