Normally I'd just want to get a 1B but with the draft coming I think I can be sold to try and get a middle/SU reliever. Nothing like a Kimbrel/Melancon/Hanrahan/Bailey/Gagne type of reliever deals we've done in the past though.

This might be crazy, and someone can knock some sense into me, but what about Carlos Santana? I imagine that he'd be cheaper prospect wise than other options and his OPS went from .528 on May 30th to .690 now. And, assuming that he were replacing Dalbec instead of Cordero, he's a switch hitter that is hitting .283/.431/.413/.844 against lefties.

Some fascinating trade discussion on The Athletic with Chad Jennings and Jim Bowden ($)
Chad proposes 6 trades of various purposes and Jim gives them a review or edit. No surprise but Bowden probably values Sox Prospects differently (less) than many of us here. But for me what became apparent in the thought exercise is that Bello is... not untouchable but I don't see any reasonable trade that I would include him in. A few times Bowden would say "you need Bello to do X" and I'm not on board. I think I'm finding I like this team present and future much more than I expected. My Won't Trade list is: Bello Mayer Ceddane Injured Casas might be dropping in value, and Mata probably needs to show more to have full value. I'm more open to Yorke, Duran and most any of the other pitchers for the right deal (not a reliever rental)! A few choice proposals from the article: Reds trade: RHP Luis Castillo Red Sox trade: 2B Nick Yorke, LHP Chris Murphy, SS Jeter Downs
Or similar for Montas. Verdict: Needs to be Casas/Bello to get Castillo as Yorke isn't a fit for Reds. Nationals trade: 1B Josh Bell Red Sox trade: 2B/SS Brainer Bonaci, RHP Kutter CrawfordVerdict: Doesn't help 1B defense issues Tigers trade: LHP Gregory Soto Red Sox trade: LHP Brandon Walter, RHP Wikelman GonzalezVerdict: Not enough from Sox I'd be open to something like that for a controllable reliever with how minor league pitching depth has been shaping up.

Nationals trade: 1B Josh Bell Red Sox trade: 2B/SS Brainer Bonaci, RHP Kutter CrawfordVerdict: Doesn't help 1B defense issues He really would hesitate to upgrade from the Sox 1B situation (.197/.270/.299) to Josh Bell (.308/.390/.492) because he's not enough of a defensive upgrade? Really? Like, if you want to argue that's too much to give up for a rental or that Casas might be ready to help in the second half, that would all make sense. But Bell would immediately turn first base from the team's biggest hole to a strength. My god, no wonder he was such a terrible GM.

I've heard that the Yankees have been in on Castillo and for that price they can have him. I'd be really happy if the Yankees give up a few more prospects this trade deadline with them already looking like early favorites for the WS. For me Mayer/Casas/Yorke and at least one of Mata/Bello are untouchable.

What 1B defensive issue? Dalbec is at 0 OOA (exactly average) and you don't need great defense at 1B. I can buy offensive issue, but not defense.

I think it was an easily beatable package but the Mariners are 34-41 and 7 games back of the wild card and have a GM that often leads the league in transactions so he might still be available once France returns. Edit: And losing Winker, Crawford, and Rodriguez due to suspension for 7, 5, and 2 games respectively can't help them become buyers either.

I don't think we should entertain any "rental" players if it includes giving up a top 15 prospect.

I think all of our pitching is already in the system.

Yeah I don't know what it's going to take to get Bryan Reynolds, but the Sox need another outfielder desperately-
Kiké might not even make it back. The Sox need another outfielder. Duran can't play CF-
Bryan Reynolds can play CF and is a solid to great player. He's controllable, but he will cost a lot. The Sox have no one but Duran and Verdugo guaranteed past this year in the outfield. They are both LFs.
Rafaela might be up a full year from now, but Reynolds can either play CF or Rafaela can play RF when he comes up.

The Seattle Mariners are in contention, so trading for Mitch Hanniger is out of the question now.

Doesn't Arizona have a few OF that they are willing to dangle? The other good news is that we should surely pick up a few top 30 prospects out of our draft haul next week not to mention the incoming IFA class which should make a few prospects slightly more expendable.

We don't need "good" We just need something in between "temporarily better than what we currently have" and "can the pitcher just hit for himself and DH the outfielder?"

I'm just salivating thinking about all of the prospects that are going to leave the division in the next month.

Ramón Laureano seems like the only logical fit for an upgrade in the outfield after Bryan Reynolds had a oblique strain and landed on the IL.
So the obvious targets are Josh Bell, Ramón Laureano, right handed reliever of any kind.

For me I've been screaming for Garrett Cooper but I also recently wanted Carlos Santana. I'd solve 1B before OF personally.

Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Sox are among the teams interested in Mets 1B, OF Dominic Smith. I would rather prefer Josh Bell.

What the heck happened to Dominic Smith? Not even sure if he's worth a roster spot. I would be interested if he were DFA'd, but even then I'm not sure who is worth cutting to put him on the 40 man.

The more and more I think about, isn't Juan Soto the exact guy the Sox should be going all-out for? Isn't he the guy you build up the farm to be able to trade for? Given his age and the need for an outfielder, he's also the guy they should be most willing to give a big contract to. You'd have him under control for the rest of this season plus 2 more. Even if they aren't entirely confident in being able to make a run this season, for the longer term now is the time to make a play for a true franchise player. Forget trading pieces for mid level rentals. Go for the big fish. Rarely do you have an opportunity to acquire a 23 yr old franchise player who most would consider a top 5 player in the game.

Wonder what it would take for the Yankees to give us Gallo to kick the tires on? He's a prime buy-low candidate right now, ++ corner outfield and first base defense with a BABIP primed to bounce back next year when the shift is banned. His salary is still retained by the Rangers so we don't need to worry about tax concerns.
