Pete Abraham @peteabe · 14m Per the Sox: The Red Sox today acquired RHP James Norwood from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations.

I think it's a sign they know their in it, they're being aggressive. This guy may be hit or miss, but Chain gave up nothing.

Throws hard, k’s a lot of ppl in AAA.
Make an adjustment, throw it at the wall, and see if it can stick

I like the move. That said crowding the 40 man and the active roster. Be interesting to see what happens. Might a 3/4 for 1 trade be coming at sometime?

This sounds like a minor league move. The guy has pitched 17 innings. 24 hits, 9 BB, Whip of almost 2. Doesn’t sound like any help at this point.

This move has nothing to do with them being in contention or not. They potentially add an arm for nothing but cash and almost certainly try to get him through waivers on Monday amid the flurry of moves. They need that 40-man spot once Arroyo comes off the IL, so the intent here seems clear, particularly given that he's out of options.
Based on the Baseball Savant numbers, his splitter has the potential to be kind of nasty, but his 4-seam gets hit really hard. Put him in the shop with Abbott and Haviland and see what you can get.

Sox seem to trade often with the Phillies. Perhaps Dombrowski has something to do with recent exchanges. It would be nice if they all work out like the Workman/Hembree for Pivetta/Seabold.

I mean this was a guy who'd been DFA on Monday. Feels more like they took what they could get for a guy they were likely to lose for nothing on waivers. That said, when teams talk about trades, they discuss a number of players and there's sometimes interest that's made known, which can lead to later deals.

Also, Dombrowski wasn’t the GM when the Pivetta trade was made. The trade was Aug 2020 and he was hired in Dec

Counterpoint- We all know what Sawamura is, we all don't know what the 1 percent chance Norwood could be. Make the right choice Red Sox.

I was discussing the idea that they trade with Philadelphia a lot. Not sure how your point relates to that. At any rate, the fact that Sawamura has options and Norwood doesn't is important. As mentioned, they need that 40-man spot back soon, presuming Arroyo doesn't have some particularly bad case of COVID. I'll be very surprised if Norwood doesn't get DFA today or at least when Arroyo returns.

We still fully expect him to clear and land in Worcester, no?

We still fully expect him to clear and land in Worcester, no? Of course when he comes back up. He will be James “Another 48hrs” Norwood.

We still fully expect him to clear and land in Worcester, no? Who knows? He was never on waivers after the Philly DFA if they traded for him, so we don't really have any indication.

Given his hard hit percentage and the ruthlessness of Philadelphia, I'm going to assume that he didn't escape without being called James Morewood.
