6/27-6/29 Red Sox @ Blue Jays Series Thread

Obviously going to be competing with the Jays for BP help. I know they were the pre-season favorites in the AL East, and they've played a bit of a tougher schedule so far. But they had some advantages this series and the series could have gone either way. I expect the Jays to have a better 2nd half than they've shown so far. But I know we can beat them with our full team in a series. Toronto doesn't have Sale, Paxton, Whitlock and Eovaldi coming back. Wouldn't be shocked if all our bullpen upgrades are internal. Or Houck and Duran, based on AC's less-than-cryptic comments ...

So this is a stupid question, but do the players that miss the Toronto series for unique personal reasons still get the full 162 game paycheck or are those games deducted as some sort of unpaid personal leave?

Dock Ellis taking acid was technically a “personal health” decision, too. It’s just one that worked out better. Vida Blue, 24-8, 1.82 in 1971. Just sayin'... I seem to recall Bill Lee saying he pitched a good game high as a kite and Bernie Carbo saying he was high for every game of his career - including Game 6, WS, 1975, Fenway Park, Boston, Mass. Any health decision that a player makes that adversely affects the team is fair game for fans to be pissed off about. It could be a player's expansive waist line, his refusal to dedicate himself to rehabbing an injury, his boozing and drugging, or other reckless off-the-field behavior. It could be a player doing a Kevin Brown with his fist against a wall or former MFY prospect Brien Taylor getting into a brawl. These are all dumb decisions that players have made that affected their health and team. All are well within the boundaries of what fans and the press should comment on freely.

I'm trying to understand why the Sox players didn't want to vaccinate before, but now will by September. For the young players like Duran and Houck, I pretty much see it as leverage to get some extra back door bonus to give them incentive to get the shot. With Sale, he hasn't been around the team for very long the past 2 years. He hasn't really needed to be asked yet. If I was Duran and Houck making the minimum salary, dollars would be my main goal too. "You want me to get the shot that I don't necessarily believe in? Pay me." I think the Sox would rather pay to have them get the vaccine versus the bad publicity, too. Zero chance of this. Maybe I worded it wrong but it could be worded something like "Hey we can't do it in writing but we will give u 50 thousand over the minimum if you just get the shot this year on next year's salary." Just odd that they wouldn't get the shot before and now they will. I'm a terrible example but I got a extra 75 dollars for my vaccination card. I'm just thinking about the oddities of all this and trying to create a reasonable scenario that involves my favorite thing, money.

There's a big difference between getting high and choosing to not get a vaccine. Saying they are both health decisions is absurd.
