I'd settle for one in this series and would have even before tonight. The matchups and the non-availability of some of our guys made this look like a tough series to win.
Going just by Seabold's profile on SP.com and by his minor league numbers, I've never been a fan. His one appearance with the RS last year and his performance tonight haven't changed that.

Sometimes teams get off to a early lead, seems like it's going to be an easy night, and then lose focus. Not saying that will necessarily happen. Sox have to just keep grinding.

Uh oh. Looks like we are back to playing AL East opponents again.

As a point of perspective, Houck has pitched in three consecutive games so he likely would be due for a day off tonight regardless No doubt they did that on purpose They also made sure that Duran got 6 hits in his last two games... he'd be due for a couple 0-fers anyway.

Gausman was just sitting out there in free agency. Signed for $22M AAV over 5 yrs. According to Fangraphs he’s already generated $26.4M in value and it’s not even July yet. While I agree that this looks like a steal in mid 2022, it may be a little early to declare 5/110 a steal (although he's been a pretty durable mid-rotation guy in aggregate). Well, he definitely owns the Sox. He did this to them in back to back games in April too.
Not your older brother's Gausman...

Connor Seabold is now your Red Sox season leader in swings and misses in a single start

I do not think Seabold pitched that bad, but I thought he was running out of gas in the third inning.

Uh oh. Looks like we are back to playing AL East opponents again. Yup, they've yet to prove they can handle their AL East opponents, but it's not too big a deal right now. They can't afford to sink, but they don't have to swim. They just have to stay afloat, just tread water against the East - basically just don't drown. All they have to do is be one of three wild cards. They should be able to manage that. Hopefully they can finally figure out how to beat an AL East team beside Baltimore (who they haven't beat either) by later in the season. If they show they can stand up to the beasts of the AL, then I'd feel better about their chances in October, but the team they have now probably won't quite be the finished product they have later in the season, a statement you can make about any team really given that contenders will add some pieces to the roster and non-contenders will purge a bit. Like I've said before, with so many damn playoff spots and the way things are set up, I guess the urgency just isn't there for me the way it has been in the past.

The Phillies might not have gotten ripped off if it was Hembree for Swabold straight up. I'm old enough to remember when people were calling for Winck's head after his first start.
They don't come out of the box firing on all cylinders like a Buzz Lightyear doll...

Mike Trout went 4 for his first 30 when he came up... I wouldn't mind Seabold turning into the Mike Trout of pitchers...

Pretty much. People don’t understand that command pitchers can be a little amped up when they first start appearing in the bigs and the command may not be as sharp. That was the case with Winck, that’s now the case with Seabold. I’d let him get comfortable before branding him a failure. He got barreled up by some elite hitters but the velo was up 3 ticks from his outing last year. Not the same pitcher as he was in that discouraging showing, this one has a big league future imo

I guess one way to look at it is Gausman is dealing. If we can't score it doesn't really matter how many the Jays score. Was hoping for a better showing from Seabold. Seemed like the Jays had very good reads on him. This was a difficult assignment. Confident he'll be better next time. Does he pitch Saturday in Wrigley? Hope the wind isn't blowing out.

I am not just going on results. He doesn’t impress me. Maybe I’ll eat those words, but he reminds me of Owens… just not quite enough giddyup for the Bigs.

2.14 WHIP usually doesnt lead to positive results. OTOH neither does 4 hits in 7 innings. Not ready to write Seabold off yet but has stuff to work on and maybe he can get another shot when the rosters expand.

Owens problem was that he had no idea where the ball was going and he was a one pitch pitcher. 93 is plenty of giddy up when you command it. Seabold just didn’t command it tonight. Last years 89/90 mph Seabold is a different story, that guy wasn’t big league quality

I love how 3 weeks ago nobody was on the Duran hype wagon besides me saying he should be our starting OF not Kiké. Now we lose our closer and him for a series and nobody is talking about our closer being gone for the series they are focused on Duran. This is why I love baseball so much! A few weeks changes everyoneâÂÂs opinions. I still donât think he should necessarily be starting over Kikè. I would like to have him available for this series though as Kikè is not available and Duran is clearly a positive impact at the plate and on the bags at the moment Iâd be mixing him into the lineup semi-regularly though. With how flexible Kikè is you can basically use Duran to spell Kikè himself, Bogaerts, Story, Verdugo, JBJ, and even Devers depending on their desire to get weird with Kikè and have him play 3B. So you can basically have him get close to a starters workload. Iâd like him to get more time in the corners tbh JBJ has a wRC+ of 60 before tonight started. I love JBJ and I still think he's a outfielder on this team next year, but it's pretty clear to me who goes to the bench when Kiké comes back. It's JBJ. How do they allign the outfield defense, is the better question when that happens.

Winck looks like he could at least be a good reliever with his power sinker. That one pitch at least plays. Add other stuff in, which is possible from the looks, and there is no real comparison.
