Freili Encarnacion’s last game: June 18th. Johanfran Garcia‘s last game: 6/20. Both are still out as of today.

The FCL Box score watching, I will be. Yoda was a well known box score scout. Knew that "there is another" but could barely tell you the first thing about the force potential or training of Leia.

There are 14 guys on the DSL rosters who have been out at least since 6/20 or haven't even played yet this year. Biggest names are Freili, Johanfran, and Yizreel Burnet, who hasn't pitched yet at all. I'm going to look into it after this week's games (guys tend to pop back up in the Saturday intrasquad).

Luis Ravelo making his debut today, playing SS and leading off. Excited for Ravelo, and also excited to see just how much of a priority Liendo is.

WHERE did we get all of this pitching?? Chris Murphy after 3 innings has 3 K's, 1 bb, and zero hits allowed.
Pretty soon the Rays will be envious of us!! Lol

Lol I know you didn't mean it as a real question, but worth thinking about: - Super low bonus IFA - Random late-round college senior who turned into a different pitcher during the year in which the season was canceled by a global pandemic - Part of return in trade of legit MLB regular LF - Mid-round college pick who randomly fixed his issues with control upon signing that led to his falling that far - Part of return in trade of two already crumbling MLB RPs

No I didn't! It is a beautiful thing. Not sure what your thoughts are, Chris...but I love what Chaim has done. Has his influence been a big part of what we are now seeing? Is it just a deja vue all over again? I'm so pleased with Bloom's direction. Our current team has flaws and may or may not get into the playoffs this year, but I really like the decisions that are being made. I have always loved following the minor leagues. I've been doing it for over 50-years starting with the Sporting News even though the stats were weeks old. Thanks to our new front office, things are interesting once again in the "sticks".

To be clear, wasn't necessarily trying to make a larger point.
Bloom inarguably had nothing to do with Bello, Walter, or Murphy - they were drafted before he got there and the player dev apparatus was in place when he got here for the most part - they certainly have added bodies recently though, which is good. Seabold came out of a fleecing to be sure, and we'll see if Winckowski winds up being worth the Benintendi trade (plus whatever they get out of the other four, which currently looks like whatever they wind up getting out of Franchy).

The main concrete takeaways for me are a) a shift away from an overly rigid drafting approach, focusing narrowly on conventional deliveries, ca. 2014; and b) maybe the thought that it might be better to draft good command/control guys and hope they can add velocity, rather than draft velocity guys and hope they add command/control?

Those are both industry-wide shifts. On a recent BA podcast Kyle Glaser I think was talking about that. They used to say you draft velocity because you can't teach that and you can teach command, but the conventional thinking now is pretty much the opposite (and a gross oversimplification of how teams evaluate pitchers anyway in the era of Trackman, spin rates, etc.).

I don't know that the draft good command/control theory really holds up in our recent draft classes though? Top P picks in recent years include Wyatt Olds, Shane Drohan, Jeremy Wu-Yelland, Ryan Zeferjaun, and Chris Murphy. I wouldn't say any of those guys demonstrated very good control/command in college. This front office isn't scared off by some unsightly BB rates (see Troye as a priority Day 3 pick last year or even Drohan's numbers at FSU). I do buy into the deemphasis of things like conventional deliveries and conventional body types in favor of effective stuff.

Murphy had 6 clean innings, I guess they brought him out for the 7th. He ends up with 6innings, 5hits, 4runs, 3earned,2bb, 4ks.
very successful debut.

To one of Chris' points above, though, the Mata/Bello/Walter/Murphy/Groome/Ward phalanx were all brought in between 2016 and 2019. Houck too. In other words, "how'd they get all this promising pitching all of a sudden?" is a question about what the team was doing under Dombrowski (though not necessarily what they were doing *because of* Dombrowski) rather than what they're doing now. Bloom's added to the arsenal through trades (Seabold and Winckowski) and R5 thievery (Whitlock), but it's TBD on his drafted/IFA guys.
Heck, if these were indeed industry-wide shifts, maybe the Red Sox are now correcting for an overcorrection in that direction. (Or more likely it's just contingency and small sample size stuff giving the illusion of a recent "trend.")

Blaze Jordan’s maturation as a hitter was on full display in his 2nd PA ( he doubled in his 1st): Down 0-2, works the count full while taking some close pitches and fouling 3 others to draw a Walk. He’s a very very different hitter from last year where he was hacking early in the counts to avoid striking out ( His swing% was a Jimenezsque 63.6% !!!) Kudos to all the people involved in making him the hitter he is now. It’s scary to think that he’s just scratching the surface of an immense potential.

Looks like Chris Sale passed his test in Portland. He gave up 1 run and four hits while striking out seven in four innings. He didn’t walk anyone. Did anyone see him pitch? I’d be curious to know how he actually looked.

Interesting thing happened in the Salem’s game: At the top of the 7th , Lynchburg reliever Rémy Artiles entered the game….and saying that he was all over the place would be an understatement 32 pitches, 11 strikes, 2 WP, 4 walks (2 of them on 4 pitches), 2 doubles an a homer. He registered 2 outs before leaving: one on a rocket line out and the other on 3 pitches strikeout. Who was the K victim? Marcelo Mayer. Mayer K’d twice tonight to ensure that he leaves the month of June with a K rate north of 30%. He swung 10 times so far during the game and came up empty 5 times. I honestly thought he may drop in the ranking not the other way around 😂
