Brutal self-inflicted loss.
Febles sending Vaz, Cora with pitching decisions from Hill after he got wobbled to Robles and Diekman. Just so winnable.

Robertson has converted only 9 of 12 save opportunities. You people would run a guy like that out of town for lacking the closer mindset or whatever. (To be clear, *I* don't care about saves. But if saves are your thing, Robertson has been rather meh.) I just want a right handed reliever better than Brasier and Robles. Don't care if he closes. That death match idea between them was a good one.

This is no doubt the worst loss of the season. Up 4-0 vs a team 16 games under .500. 10 walks is atrocious vs a weak hitting team. Alex Cora has limited choices in the bullpen time for our GM to rectify the situation with Tampa and New York coming up.

Isn’t it fun being a franchise with a top five payroll? We get to outsmart everyone else with our color coded spreadsheets and toothpicks-and-paste bullpen!

Yeah I’m pretty tired of seeing Diekman out there. Just cut your losses with that signing already. At least Robles was cheap.

I agree with the idea that the Sox need to act soon. With the schedule the next three weeks there is no advantage to wait out the market. In fact, if they act soon and things still don't go well and they decide to throw in the towel, they would still have time to unload. I am happy to let Bloom decide WHO (I think I prefer Bard) but Do it NOW

Maybe Whitlock comes back sooner than expected, but you shouldn't rush him. Need to get someone now.

Alex Cora has limited choices in the bullpen time for our GM to rectify the situation with Tampa and New York coming up. Not even close to it for me. The worst was the Saturday night game in St. Pete against the Rays, where the Sox were an out away from a win with a two-run lead. Dalbec couldn't handle a throw from Story that wasn't great but very catchable, and then Kiermaier hit the two-run walkoff. That stung a lot more. The common denominator for both losses: Robles.

also on our offense given that outside of the first two innings, the sox were setdown 1-2-3 in the 3rd 4th
7th 9th
5th and 8th innings we had 1 hit and thats it

Hill left with a sprained knee? I thought it was because of a sprained line. He might be better in the pen. He seems tough for a few innings, then… floor drops out.
And that leads to the pen problem. I am not as down on it as others, but the problem is, when you have starters designed to go short, you need a longer pen… which is really hard to do. The Sox have sone really solid relievers. If they were getting 6-7 innings from starters, they’d be a great bunch. But needing 4-5 innings many games? Tough to do.

Real bad loss for the Chaim Bloom pitching acquisition department. Yeah, but he’s smarter than everyone else. Bullpen arms lack “value”.

A package of Thaddius Ward and Jeter Downs should get a great reliever. Both of those guys are talented and young enough to get something. They're both facing 40 man roster trouble soon. Hard to carry Downs on there if you don't love him. Ward needs to be added or you lose him to rule 5 draft anyways.

Too many walk off losses and blown saves from this crew. Let’s not forget how bad Matt Barnes was early in the year. This bullpen has been saved by Schreiber.

I see nothing wrong with the pen that getting back Taylor + Sale + Whitlock won't fix, with Paxton to throw in later. If they want to add another arm or two on top of that, I'd just as soon they add from Pawtucket - as Chris points out on the twitter, re: Ort and Kelly:
I'm not interested in trading prospects for other teams' relievers, who are as likely as not to flame out anyway, if the history of such trades is any guide.

Real bad loss for the Chaim Bloom pitching acquisition department. Yeah, but he’s smarter than everyone else. Bullpen arms lack “value”. What are people complaining about here? Bloom added a bunch of bullpen arms, some of whom have done well. Maybe they've stuck with Robles a little too long, but it's not like Bloom doesn't care about relief pitching.

I'm sure Downs' value is WAY down with his struggles the last two years, and Ward has thrown eight innings above A-ball.

How many times do we have to watch the same re-run. It's still not funny.. I'm at the point where I just want to see Chaim add a pitcher that isn't off the waiver wire.
The bullpen has two types of pitchers:
elite or at least above average (Houck, Schreiber, Strahm).
And
Dogshit (everyone else)

That game was a giveaway. This team is a .600 100 win caliber team if the pen would stop giving games away, not that they'd be where the Yankees are.
I still think they need a closer, whether its Robertson, Bard, Bednar, or somebody else.
That allows Houck and eventually Whitlock and Schreiber to be their main righties out of the pen with Taylor and Strahm as their main lefties, which would steady the bullpen.
