There was a post today about Ruiz and tryouts. Do you still think Sox will still sign him (and at reasonable money)?
Thanks.

I think we're all done (for now) with 23 signings. All of the signings are here: www.soxprospects.com/international.htm except for Almanzar, Castillo, Marin, and Figueroa. We'll know soon once all the bonuses are out what their potential game plan is for Tony Ruiz (if any). The known bonuses so far: Cespedes ($1,400,000), Arias ($525,000), Y. Ruiz ($500,000), and Sanchez ($150,000). The Red Sox have $2,069,000 left in their bonus pool. They are allowed to trade for more $$$.

I believe he's the first Bahamian international free agent signing in franchise history.

I wonder what sort of injury would impact Ruiz's pre-existing deal with the Sox. As a position player, rather than pitcher, the chances of a "outcome altering injury" at age 16 seems less likely. Add to that that Ruiz is not profiled as an athletic player, for whom quickness or dexterity seems important. For the Sox, the million plus is "use it or lose it,"** and was already budgeted, so reducing their offer seems significant. If the Sox reduced their offer, I guess that leaves Ruiz with few options this signing period (his $1 mil plus would be hard for other teams to fit given their budgeting years ahead). And the Sox's position, knowing him best, would likely carry sway with other teams. So does he sit for next year? I guess that is where the renewed tryouts fit in. You feel bad for kid like Ruiz who had this lifechanging understanding in place for a year or more, and on the cusp of it either suffers a presumably significant injury or medicals reveal a medical condition that alters the risk/reward profile.
** unless some unexpected player defects from Cuba and can be signed this period.
edit: For the Sox this is also problematic. They chose to spread their money around, making only one or two million plus kids each period, and he was one. They already are down $500K for luxury tax penalties, and this is effectively "losing" another million from that pool.

I would still wait to see what happens before worrying too much or overthinking it.
Not spoken from a place of knowledge, to be clear, but rather one of experience. Could be any number of reasons that he still signs with the Red Sox later. "Tryouts" could just mean that he's still working out with the guys who haven't signed yet (2024+ class etc.).

Not sure how "problematic" this is. There are always prospects who may not be highly thought of but pop up as the year goes by. They may be able to trade the money to another team and pick up a lottery type prospect from them. Or they could just sign a bunch of low cost wild cards and hope one or more pan out. I don't see them just throwing this amount of money away. I'm sure all teams have a backup plan for just this type of scenario.

I seem to recall unspent funds could be rolled into the next period... is this (still) the case?

Nice find! I'm hearing it as "Sten" more than anything else, but I'm a little hard of hearing and don't always pick up subtleties.

One more signing: Stijn Van Der Schaaf, RHP, Netherlands. Whenever see a Dutch player, brings me back to Win Remmerswaal and his time as both a player for the HaSox and later his short time as a big league player.

One more signing: Stijn Van Der Schaaf, RHP, Netherlands. It looks like Van Der Schaaf pitched in both the U-18 European Baseball Championship and the U-18 Baseball World Cup. At the World Cup, the Netherlands finished in 5th place, which was their best finish in the history of the event, and Van Der Schaaf pitched in relief to a line of: 5.1IP, 2H, 2ER, 4BB, 5K. He had even more success in a relief/long relief role in the European Baseball Championship pitching to a line of: 9.2IP, 3H, 2ER, 3BB, 18K For those that really want to dive deep, there is full video (decent quality) here of the Netherlands - Czech Republic semifinal from the European Baseball Championship which include 5 innings out of relief from Van Der Schaaf. He comes in sometime around the 1:20:00 mark. Here's some additional footage of Van Der Schaaf:

Athletic ($) overview of the IFA class with Romero quotes on several. theathletic.com/4105016/2023/01/19/red-sox-international-free-agents/example: Franklin Arias, SS, Venezuela Scout: Alex Requena
Arias reportedly signed for $525,000, and brings both a strong offensive approach and an impressive defensive profile as a middle infielder.
Romero: “He is uber-athletic and really smooth defensively. He’s going to have a plus arm and has already put on a lot of good weight since we’ve started seeing him. He’s a five-tool upside player. He’s one of the best defenders in the class and he’s got offensive upside with surprising pop for his size and just overall a really intriguing package when you consider what he can do on both sides of the ball.” You are going to like what you read. Others: Yoeilin Cespedes, SS, Dominican Republic Yoiber Ruiz, SS, Venezuela Jesus Garcia, RHP, Venezuela Kleyver Salazar, C, Venezuela Alex Castillo, OF, Venezuela Stijn Van Der Schaaf, RHP, Netherlands Chad Delancey, SS, Bahamas

Tidbit from the above article on Van Der Shaaf:
The Red Sox first saw him at an international tournament and liked his 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame. Van Der Schaaf is a bit older than some of the other prospects here and will turn 19 in a few months. Given his physical development, he’ll report to minor league spring training on March 4 in Fort Myers, Fla. rather than the Dominican Academy.
