Thanks very much to all of you for enhancing the moderate (fleeting) happiness the 2022 Red Sox brought me. Being far away from "home", it is nice to be able to tap into the (often misguided) passion that long-time Sox fans on this site share.
I'll now rest up for a few weeks and do something else until the Hot Stove turns up. Best wishes to all of you until then.

It's funny. I've been watching the Red Sox since 1980 and I've seen 11 losing seasons in that time. Nine of those seasons were full seasons as the other two were the shortened 1994 and 2020 seasons. Out of 9 full season losing seasons, now 5 times, more than half, the Red Sox finished with a record of 78-84 .481. When they disappointed in 1983 it was 78-84. Then when they disappointed in 1987, they finished 78-84. Same record 10 years later in 1997. Then again in 2015 and that was a last place finish, just like in 2022, with the difference being that the Sox played really strong baseball in the 2nd half of that season which portended the bright future ahead. This year's squad had a terrible second half. They went 35-52 after peaking at 43-32. So when the Sox are set to disappoint, pencil them in at 78-84. This is great. I also caught the bug in 1980. Thanks for the perspective.

In the 13 years between then and when you started, in 1980, that record didn't show up once! Weirdly, no sub-.500 seasons in that span, just lots of mediocrity plus. The two memorable seasons (and heartbreakers, of course) - 1967 and 1975.

For the last game of a disappointing season, not bad at all - the JD dingers, two hits from Xander, another save from the resurgent Matt Barnes! Mostly, the end of the Eck era made it must see TV.
Let the off-season drama begin! Get the popcorn ready.

Hard not to have an emotional response when you follow the great sport of baseball so closely. I find myself thinking back to so many moments of pure jubilation, despair and every feeling in between watching my Red Sox.
On a day where Eck formally steps away and the writing is all but on the wall with JD, Nate and (god dang I hope not) Xander I’m struggling a little bit, but somehow also hopeful.
What. A. Game.

Positive note- Barnes somehow ended the year with acceptable numbers and a positive WAR
12 scoreless appearances to end the season.
2nd half of the season
24 games
22.2 IP 19 H 4 ER 9 BB 20 K 1.59 ERA

Let the off-season drama begin! Get the popcorn ready. The Sox win when they should have lost this year and lost pretty much the rest of the way. They got hot right before the trade deadline and that put false hopes in some people's minds. Then they sweep the last series of the year to get the 14th pick of the draft. Ugh. Anything bad that could happen to this team, did happen. Bye bye 2022. Won't miss you in the least. Seeing Eck gone ends a huge chapter. I started watching in 1998. Eck's last season as a pro (with the Sox). Good luck to Nate, JDM, and Xander if they leave. This team has a lot of holes to fill. Bloom's biggest off-season, will probably define his career the rest of the way (either ending his time here soon, or bringing the Sox to championship glory and staying for a long time).

I'll give you a piece of trivia. In his last game in 1998, a playoff game, Eck gave up a HR as a member of the Red Sox. Who did he give up the HR to? Hint: It was a slugger who played for the same franchise Eck started his career with. One whose name is let's say, not obscure. Lol

I would guess Ellis Burks, but that's probably wrong. Lol

I haven't posted in a very long time but have been reading this forum/site for the past 15+ years. Just reflecting, if this is really Xander's last appearance in a Sox uniform.
I remember following him (as many here did as well) when he was a 17 year old kid in the DSL and showed that 5-tool potential. In fact his bio here still says "Potential all-star and top-five shortstop in the game. Realistically profiles as a first-division, bat-first shortstop."
Pretty cool to have been able to follow the path till now. Hard to argue against that description above, he's been an elite player and has helped us win two rings - really hope Bloom finds a way to get a contract done but if not it's a been a great ride and one of the most enjoyable parts of being a farm system fan too.
