That’s a big downgrade, certainly can’t fault Castiglione for wanting to spend time with his family though

Wait... is Merloni gonna do play-by-play?
That would be less than ideal.

I'm guessing the over whelming unpopularity he brings was what did him in.

I'm guessing the over whelming unpopularity he brings was what did him in. Haha, yes, *being extremely bad at one's job* tends to be a red flag for employers.
I don't even think you can blame him though; his schtick is to be a depressing buzzkill (which I guess some people enjoy in a talk radio format for some reason?). The mystery is why NESN ever thought that would be a good fit for game broadcasts.

They might have scrambled after what happened to Jerry Remy and was looking for tryouts or bodies to fill in. I'm guessing they didn't want to hand the job to Youk or Middlebrooks if they weren't made for the job.

Works for me. Would rather more Middlebrooks than the other 3.

Bad year from the booth upcoming. Like end of career Ned Martin and any season bob Montgomery did color for the team bad.
Sox really need to go out and poach a decent PBP man for starters and although Youk and Middlebrooks are fair as color guys, not for more than a handful of games before they get stale.
Understand they want a former Sox player handling the color job, they need to find one who has the personality and voice to handle the job.

Youk kept improving over the season. He and Middlebrooks are keepers. Monaco is ready for prime time.

Yeah I can’t say I’m thrilled. Dan and Youk honestly just sound like…all the other announcers in the league and aren’t that good. WMB and Monaco do not have the very special and unique qualities Remy, Eck, and Orsillo had, they were all a serious cut above as I’ve stated here. But WMB and Monaco are very good and while not as fun and unique are still upper tier. I don’t think Youk is very good. I want to like him, he’s obviously a bit of a club legend, but I just did not enjoy his style much. I’ll enjoy the nights that WMB gets some time.
Also disappointed Millar is going to be involved again. I thought he was really just too hokey. Playing a part. I didn’t enjoy it or find him particularly insightful. Without someone like Eck to manage that I think it’s going to be not that great. Booth will prob be a disaster for awhile imo. Maybe disaster is over dramatic but I don’t care lol I’m spoiled my whole life I’ve listened to all time great announcers. Bummed I won’t be this year.

I think Youk and WMB show promise in the role.
I think a lot of people expect instant success, as if they've been doing it their entire life.
Jerry Remy was hardly the Remdawg when he started. He wasn't much better than what we saw in the booth last year. Sean McDonough helped bring out his personality, Reny gained experience and grew more comfortable and eventually became a beloved institution.
So be patient and give them time to develop.
Even Millar is learning although he'd have to unlearn his schtick from his MLB talkshow he had.
At some point I can see Holt one day becoming more of a regular. On the current team Christian Arroyo is a guy I can see doing NESN well.

I just don’t like his vibe in the booth but it could be more personal preference than anything.

That guy is really funny; I remember fondly his reaction to that Christian Arroyo grand slam in Atlanta. I just think the NESN booth would be too small for him. Verdugo's a lot of fun also.
Lots of overlap on the Venn diagram for "charismatic" and "has played for both the Red Sox and Dodgers." Gives me high hopes for Justin Turner.

In my opinion the local baseball announcing booth is the most intimate of all sports announcing. So I definitely consider it an intimate space and I very much agree with your premise about Millar

I think Youkilis and WMB come off more as articulate while Millar is kind of a middle aged frat boy, but he does wear his Red Sox heart on his sleeve. That guy was whacky enough to think that Boston was a destination before it was truly a destination. Maybe it was because he was thankful he didn't have to go to Japan, but he's totally a Red Sox at heart. But the way he speaks...not quite the understated but articulate way Youkilis comes off.

I do wish McDonough was on TV rather than the radio. I enjoyed him when he was on NESN way back when. I think O'Brien works better on the radio than he does in the TV booth. I know Mike Monaco is a favorite around here already. I haven't heard enough of him to have a real opinion. I'm probably in the minority but I like Lou Merloni. I would like seeing him as one of the guys on TV.
I don't listen to the radio the way I used to. Probably because I didn't get NESN until 1995 and spent a long time without cable TV so once I could watch the games I didn't want to go back to radio even though I liked Joe Castiglione. I don't go back to Martin and Woods, but I remember John Miller, Ken Coleman, and Hawk Harrelson briefly. And yeah I remember Ned Martin with Bob Montgomery. TV really wasn't Martin's thing.
