MLBTR has their projected arbitration salaries for the 2023 season, which are usually pretty spot on: Ryan Brasier (5.109): $2.3MM Rafael Devers (5.070): $16.9MM Abraham Almonte (5.012): $900K Nick Pivetta (4.166): $5.9MM Franchy Cordero (4.092): $1.5MM Alex Verdugo (4.078): $6.9MM Rob Refsnyder (4.048): $1.6MM Christian Arroyo (4.036): $2.2MM Josh Taylor (3.121): $1.1MM Reese McGuire (3.027): $1.3MM Yu Chang (3.007): $900K www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/10/mlb-projected-arbitration-salaries-2023.html

Based on FG Roster Resource, the raises for Devers, Pivetta, Verdugo, Arroyo and Taylor come to about $12.2 million. For some reason FG doesn't list McGuire and Refsnyder on the RS page. But throw those two in and you're up to about $13.5M in AAV over the 2022 roster. I hope Raffy is either signed to a long-term deal, which means he'd carry an AAV about $10M higher than the $16.9M MLBTR lists as his arb number, or traded. Letting him walk after the '23 season for a draft pick would be the worst outcome.

Red Sox Payroll now projects the Sox are nearly $86 million under the CBT when you include these raises:
That is an enormous amount of money. I am really eager to see what Bloom is going to do with all of that.

I don't know if a tweet notification has ever been more of an emotional rollercoaster for me.

I don't know if a tweet notification has ever been more of an emotional rollercoaster for me. 17.5 is an excellent bargin. I thought Devers would get at least 20 in arbitration, so maybe it's an olive branch between both sides.

Remember, Devers was projected for $16.9M by MLBTR, so this is very modestly above expectations. Don’t want to read too much into $600K of extra salary.

Pretty much anytime Devers is mentioned these days it gets everyone reading into it. Don’t blame anyone I do it too lord knows. I think most of us here consider it quite unlikely he resigns. It’s very depressing. At the point I just try as hard as I can to ignore Devers news.
Otherwise my heart tries to convince my brain a half million in extra money might mean something other than a total typical and not at all exciting business move.

Just the fact that they agreed on something is positive in that it means the sides are proactively engaged. It might make it easier to negotiate the long-term if both 2023 is sorted and if they don't have to deal with any contentious arbitration negotiation. I'll chalk this up as "good news" and try not to get too hyped.

You pay the slight premium not to piss a guy off you're trying to extend. Perfunctory but good that it got done.

Based on the arb estimates we were going off (at least in RSP's spreadsheet) before Red Sox should have another $1.5M in room under the luxury tax, pending Brasier and Arroyo.

How come everyone* getting less than projections? *peacock ranch owners not included This past CBA had a new rule which guarantees the salary for arbitration eligible players who agree to contracts with their teams. Previously, these guys could have been released with 30-45 days pay (depending on time of release). Players who go through arbitration still do not have guaranteed contracts. Because last off-season was truncated, we didn't see the full effect of this new rule. Given the added leverage gained from owners, it could be argued that a seemingly player friendly rule is actually an overall detriment. Possible it balances out over time, but more likely future estimates go down to account for the change. Add: all arbitration eligible players have their contracts guaranteed on opening day (if on MLB roster) regardless of arbitration resolution.

It looks everyone (except Devers) has signed for ~10% less than MLBTR expectation.
